    I'm so happy I found this video! Just saved an old laptop that I had stored and forgotten. Very well explained and made easy. Antix is so light I can even use it for work with that old computer, unbelievable.

    Running AntiX 22 on my Samsung NC10 netbook (1GB RAM, Atom CPU, 32bits). I was impressed by how few resources AntiX uses - it allows me to run Firefox & Thunderbird together!!

    To Cherry Red: I couldn't find your comment when I logged in, so I hope you see this: Hi, and thanks for your comment. Glad you found the video useful. I'm also glad I included all the basic instructions such as the difference between 32 and 64 bit. I scratched my head too when I started out with Linux - still do, actually :-) As far as the ad goes - I didn't place it there, that's RUclips's doing. I haven't seen a dime from it either, so skip, block, do whatever you like! Linux is a community thing, and I'm eternally grateful to all the developers who give this stuff away for free. I do try to pay it forward.

    Great video!
    For RUclips you could use another great video player - QMPlay2 (Qt Media Player 2). It has a tab for searching and playing youtube videos. You could set the preferred video codec to H.264 and the resolution to 720p to avoid the loading of 720p-60fps versions of the videos. You could also select specific video decoder from the Playback Settings.
    It works great on older and weak computers.

      This is exactly the type of comment I'm wishing for! I was showing off the default choices, and I was not aware of your suggestion. I'll make sure to check it out, and if it works like you say, I'll suggest including it in the iso.

    I really like how you take the time to explain the installation, very easy to understand being a senior myself. I think linux is awesome operating system. I got away from Microsoft two years ago.To many back-doors, for corporations, not secure enough. Great tutorial!

      Well, I didn't think about seniors specifically, but I think a lot of seniors have computers that came with Win XP or similar, and I tried to make the video for beginners, so it's great that you found it easy to follow. Thank you!

    After watching this i finally switched from linux Mint cinnamon to AntiX and install it in my almost 16years netbook running 32-bit intel atom processor with 2GB RAM.
    it was fun installing it, result is great for a very old underpowered netbook. Interface is very minimal but looks great.
    old netbook is much more usable. Thank you sir!!!

      Thanks, it makes me really happy to see comments such as yours! A lot of web pages are so heavy on RAM use today that you will have problems no matter how light your Linux distro is, and no matter what browser you try. But for other uses, I hope you get a few more years from your machine!

      @@punranger sir that's what i noticed while using this distro in my old netbook. offline tasks are all so good. responsive and only uses less than 500MB RAM, however webpages tends to load a bit slower than what we are used to nowadays..
      the SMtube you mentioned in this video is so great. i see improvement playing youtube video compared when watching from any browser.
      overall, still a great experience. this netbook has few more years.. I value this netbook so much, as this was my father's gift to me back in 2008.
      Thanks so much for this great content. i watched it again today, 2nd time. just in case i missed something. 🙂

    Really nice! I've got Linux MINT & Ubuntu on my potato Dell Inspiron 1720, but haven't really been happy with U, so tried to install Antix to replace U. But oooeeee, wasn't at all sure how to do that without risking the MINT half of the drive. Works nice from USB key though, definitely interested in using it to compare with the others.

      I happened to see this comment. Most linux distros have their own dedicated USB makers, which can be confusing. I can't provide support, but do try the antiX forum. If you post there, please be as specific as possible on laptop make and distro version and error messages, plus what you did to make the USB.

    nice video, wonder how this compares to puppylinux...

    • @punranger
      @punranger  Год назад +1

      I've used Puppy on several occasions, and it's a great tool and very lightweight. I think it works best as a live USB system. There is an option to install to hard drive, but I always found it hard to make it work properly. As far as I recall, Puppy uses a frugal install to hard drive, but I never understood it properly. But antiX beats Puppy both as a live USB and for a regular install. The regular install as shown here is simple and straightforward. The Live USB is simple to use by default, but there are also a couple of advanced options such as persistence and frugal install, that make antiX Live a very powerful tool, while remaining lightweight. These options go way beyond the beginner options shown in this video, though. There is a similarity in Puppy and antiX in the way they use window managers instead of fullblown desktop environments.

      I recommend you visit the antiX forum for support. I'm not a tech expert, but would recommend you try two things: 1.) Load another kernel when booting. 2.) Try a later version. I think antiX 17 has reached EOL. Try booting from a USB if you can. I recommend the full version for better hardware support.

    It's also the best way to make an all new rig into a supercomputer. People need to quit identifying it as being for old junk. It's for ANYTHING

    • @punranger
      @punranger  2 года назад +2

      As I say in the video, it also works great for new computers. But as I also say in the video, that was not the use case I wanted to focus on here. People with new rigs are spoilt for choice. What you refer to as "old junk" may in some cases be the only thing available for someone. So, antiX may work great on any machine, but for "old junk", antiX is pretty much the only thing that truly works. Feel free to make a video where you demonstrate antiX on an all new rig.

    what about gpt on uefi based system,have you tried mx linux or lubuntu?

    • @punranger
      @punranger  Год назад

      Hi, the scope of this video is limited to what newcomers to linux can do with old hardware, and as I note, there's loads of different configuration possibilities, and I only demonstrate one. Therefore, I do not go into all the technical details. Your question suggests you're already an advanced user, so it's better you do a test yourself. I'm by no means a linux expert, I look at this from a user perspective. MX is a related project, and I've checked it out, and I like it, but for this use case, I found antiX to be the best. I've also tested Lubuntu. While it is faster than standard Ubuntu in my experience, it wouldn't really work with a case like this.

    • @punranger
      @punranger  Год назад

      @@dinozaurpickupline4221 Based on your description of the hardware, I would absolutely think it is suited. But whether it will provide the usability you're looking for is impossible for me to answer. The only way to find out is to try. Make a bootable USB and do a test.
