It feels like a metaphor for human nature/evil. Our continual cycle towards war and domination, but it'll reach a point, no matter the cycle, that humanity can no longer sustain its self-destruction, hence the clock reach's its final tick, and subsequently a bomb -> Nuclear War. And the bird at the end pops out as if to congratulate us on reaching the inevitable end of what we were always building towards. That Fermi Paradox great wall, hence why the bird turns to the audience in the last few frames? As if its a decleration of warning to us humans. "This is it" The movie is a warning for doomsday?
