    Apologies in advance for this video going up a little later than usual I set aside two evenings to edit this video incase I didn't finish it the first evening but fell asleep pretty early on both times so didn't end up editing it until late this afternoon and then it took ages to export. Also sorry if the editing isn't the best in the video I was kind of rushing to get it before tomorrow as I really want to get back into the habit of always uploading on fridays :)
    Also feel free to jump around about the times for different sections of this video are in the description box and towards the end of the intro.

    100% agree that you can’t really learn a language in any good depth without learning a bit about the culture too. I feel like it’s also the other way round - I think it’s impossible to know a culture well without knowing at least a bit about its language!
    I’ve never used Tandem, but this video has definitely made me want to try it!

    • @GlobetrottingPolyglot
      @GlobetrottingPolyglot  4 года назад +2

      Yes I agree and I feel like when you are trying to learn a language you have no choice but to learn about the culture anyway.
      Ah well I hope that if you do give it a try that you'll find it useful 😊

    I haven't used this App, but I would find the overload of messages annoying. Is there a feature on the App to limit the number of messages? If you find a language exchange person who you really like and feel comfortable with; can you configure this App to just talk to only this person or is that possible in the paid version of this App?

    • @GlobetrottingPolyglot
      @GlobetrottingPolyglot  4 года назад

      I haven't tried the paid version of the app so I am not sure I haven't found a way of doing so in the free version though I feel like it would be a good idea for them to have a feature like that as that's what puts me off using the app so often. I will use it for a bit and then stop because it gets too overwhelming then try it again when I feel like I haven't really practiced speaking much so use it for a bit until it just gets too much again

      @@GlobetrottingPolyglot I have used a language exchange website called: "mylanguageexchange.com" . I is not really free to use but you pay for a minimum usage for three months. This is plenty of time to find a permanent, compatible language exchange person. All initial contacts are done through the website before you feel free to give out a Skype or similar Internet message and video programs. I used this website years ago and I have a very good language exchange partner for my French. Now I am checking new ways to find a exchange partner for Spanish.

    I have a question for Sophie or anyone who has used this app before... My English language students are 16-18 year olds.. the question is, can you select the age of your "tandem partner"? does Tandem have an age filter? because I think it can be dangerous if someone uses this app to meet underage people.
    btw, this video was on my bucket list! Congrats Sophie!

    • @GlobetrottingPolyglot
      @GlobetrottingPolyglot  4 года назад +4

      I haven't noticed a feature where you can select the ages of the people you want to talk on this app so it's probably best that you don't recommend it to your students. Unless there is an option that I didn't notice as when I signed up I didn't feel the need to specify an age, as personally I don't really care about the age to much. However I know that if I had used this app when I was under 18 then I would have felt very differently about talking to adults who I don't know. I guess you could always try the free version of the app yourself and see if you can find a section to adjust the age range but I don't remember seeing one.
      Also thank you I'm glad you liked the video

    • @GlobetrottingPolyglot
      @GlobetrottingPolyglot  4 года назад +1

      Baris Can personally I among the many who thinks duolingo is overrated. It’s okay for basics but only seems to be good for learning specific phrases and some vocabulary and doesn’t give the best grammar explanations. I don’t think using duolingo is necessary bad but I do not believe that you can learn a language just from using duolingo. However I’ve never tried the paid version so I do not know whether that version is better but the free version I personally do not like. I mean it’s very user friendly but I just feel like there are a lot better language learning apps out there

  • @ts2768

    Have you tried with another native English speaker or a speech therapist who can teach you the pronunciation the “th” sound in English? It’s one of the most difficult sounds for English learners to master and while some accents will drop it at times based on the word, I’ve noticed that you never pronounce it. I’m sorry if it’s just part of your accent and you code switch to bbc/mainstream English when speaking with others. It just comes off as more of a speech impediment that you may want to work on as it can be fixed with a minimum about of work once you understand the correct mouth position starting with jaw comfortably lax (jaw never moves with the sound) then with your tongue flexed and pressed hard against the back of your teeth then quickly retracted while you blow a quick puff of air.

    • @ts2768
      @ts2768 3 года назад

      This wasn’t meant to be rude at all and I respect regional accents, but this is a very common and important sound in our language and one that makes it unique. It makes me a little sad that you’re trying to master other languages before you’ve mastered the mother tongue. (Again assuming you are unable to make the sound even when speaking formally/outside your natural accent)

    • @GlobetrottingPolyglot
      @GlobetrottingPolyglot  3 года назад +2

      @@ts2768 hi Taylor nobody has ever commented that I have any issue with this sound before so I don’t think this is something that I need to work on. I believe if this was an issue my teachers at school would have told me about it. I’ve never had a problem where somebody hasn’t understood me because of my pronunciation of ‘th’ either. Also it’s not a requirement to speak with received pronunciation like they do on the BBC and in fact I’m starting to notice different accents on the BBC more often, so there’s no need to see a speech therapist just because I don’t sound like somebody on the BBC. In terms of my accent I’m from Essex so would definitely say that I don’t have the typical RP accent but the majority of the people in the UK don’t and this doesn’t mean that they need to improve their English.
      Also I would like to add that learning languages is a journey. You don’t need to master every single thing in every single language to be able to call yourself fluent or a good speaker and everybody has their own goals when it comes to learning languages and for some people it’s just being able to be understood in that language. It’s also a known fact that even native speakers make mistakes but this doesn’t mean that they need to spend hours studying their mother tongue before they can learn something else and for some people (including myself) that can be so boring and seem easy that you just get easily distracted, resulting in them actually not improving that much at all.
      Personally I don’t did see this comment as quite rude. Especially as my whole degree is a language degree and I’m going into my final and most important year this month I can’t just drop out now and come back later because some random person on the internet said I have a speech impediment, while not even saying what qualifies them to make that judgement. Also I’m a part time English as a foreign language tutor online so not only have you just told me that I shouldn’t be studying my degree but you just told me that I shouldn’t be doing the job that I’m doing either.
      Purely just out of interest do you speak English like they do on the BBC?

    • @ts2768
      @ts2768 3 года назад

      @@GlobetrottingPolyglot no, I don’t speak like the do on the BBC because I’m an American. Your reaction is probably the reason nobody has mentioned it before. Listen to yourself. You say “other” like “of her.” When did I say to drop out of your degree? You’re being highly dramatic. I don’t think anyone has told you because 1. You’re obviously very sensitive about it and 2. That’s not really something you tell someone. Would you tell someone with a stutter that they stutter? It’s kind of something you expect someone to be self-aware enough to know.
      Why is it not worth working on? It doesn’t take years to learn. I’ve seen some very good RUclips videos explaining the mechanics of it in less than 12 minutes. As a native English speaker you can choose not to use it, but you should at least have the ability to do so.

    • @GlobetrottingPolyglot
      @GlobetrottingPolyglot  3 года назад +1

      @@ts2768 well if your American then what makes you think that you know enough about British accents to say that I don’t talk properly? I asked a group of friends who study languages and are from different parts of country and who would tell me the truth and they said there’s nothing wrong. I’m not working on it because I don’t believe I need to because I am aware of when there are things that I struggle to pronounce in all of my languages including English but the th sound isn’t one of them. If it’s not something that you would point out to somebody then why do you do it? Also why would you say sorry if that’s rude? Whenever somebody says that it means they are being rude and shouldn’t say what they say
