@Nick Miller I've always viewed it as Christianity simply being easy to attack. What will happen to atheists going after Christianity? Nothing. Notice how many atheists wouldn't dare go after Islam the same way they go after Christianity?
I thought this was fairly obvious, but I suppose one could interpret it as an attack on all Christianity, but I saw it as a shot at charlatans who exploit faith for personal gain, power, or control, y'know, how the term "holy roller" originated. The duality of the beautiful message they put up front, and the hideous intent behind all of it.

So, the frontwoman is the vocals. She's crazy heavy. Also, Holy Roller is what I dealt with in the south. This isn't gibberish. This has to do with the "Holier Than Thou" crowd i.e. Zealots. Kiddo, Holy Rollers are the folks that ruin it for everyone else. These are the people that preach the Heaven's Gates and Hell's Flames. The lyrics make sense.
If we wanted to make it an umbrella term, essentially it means Someone who manipulates others to fulfill their own desires under the guise of spiritual or religious guidance. Christians often pray specifically to do God's Will and not their own because they understand how easy it is to fall into this trap.
From KillYourStereo A “holy roller” often best describes an over-zealous member of evangelical Christian groups, the kind that display their religious ecstasy by overblown frenzied excitement, shaking their bodies violently and falling all over the place. ‘Holy Roller‘ itself is littered with nods towards Christianity - references to Nazareth, seraphims (angels), fall from graces, paradises, blood being turned into wine, take-of-my-body-this-bread, etc. - and is based around the idea, or at least the image, of faith. Though from where I’m standing, the song seems more like a condemnation of those who poison the well for others in order to arbitrarily and selfishly advance their own spirituality points. Whether through bigotry, ignorance, social exclusion, empty gestures, riches or other means. I think it’s all found in the songs opening line: “Holy roller sits in the garden we fled“; those who just want paradise all to themselves, and damn whoever they must step over in order to achieve it. As the song later states, when you die, they sure won’t pray for you. Metaphor or not, ‘Holy Roller‘ is in some form about the monstrous ways that selfishness and callousness in people can manifest towards others; how we must cut such individuals out, less they drag us down.
As a non-Christian, I always associated the term 'holy roller' with wealthy televangelists. So my interpretation was that the song was more anti-hypocrite than anti-religion. Never knew the origin of the term, tho, so thanks for that! Appreciate both of ya'll.
I think the visuals 100% serve a purpose here. It is a pretty accurate depiction of the "holly rollers". They present a facade a goodness/holiness/grace, however you don't have to dig too deep to find pure evil. In the end, the demon version appears to completely swallow the beautiful facade. It is very accurate and very powerful.

I dont know where i would go to say this where it would be seen, but its something ive wanted to get off my chest for so long and i feel comfortable here since ive watched a number of your music and lyric analysis videos. I guess i want to say, i left religion behind when i was young, maybe 15 years ago in my early teens, before i feel i even developed a faith in anything.. its been buried away for so long and ive accepted it as my normal. Ive spent so much of my life being a hardcore atheist, until i mellowed out into my late 20s.I listen to metal that span from each end of the lyrical spectrum, from religious to vehemently anti-religious. Ive enjoyed many bands with overt lyrics about faith, like Impending Doom, For Today, and the like. Ive noticed that sometimes when i confront music about Christ or His love or redemption... i feel something, like something that evokes me deep in my core thats positive and pure that eases me. I cant properly describe but it lasts briefly. Its not an emotion, but something that lifts the burden off of my soul for just a few moments, before i return to myself. I tried to write it off, many times. Every time it happens some voice in me grows stronger and makes me wonder if this is His way of trying to reach out to me or if its something im just making up. I dont know if others can relate, but its conflicting and weighed on me for a while. Im sure this will get buried in the posts but i wanted to get it out there.

Fact: Spiritbox has actual “ghostly sounds” caught from a (maybe their) Spiritbox in every one of their songs... The Beauty of Suffering (live recording) would be my suggestion!! She actually sings in it as well!
I understand his reaction. I love Spiritbox but when I heard this song I loved it and then heard the lyrics and was like “uhhh, I shouldn’t like this maybe idk” 🤣
I love spirit box and as much as I like this song I really don’t I think it scratches the surface on how truly talented the band is and it shows how powerful Courtney can be but you have to see the levels this girl has with her voice I mean she’s amazing.
Spirit box is also a translation of a the Yiddish term of Dibbuk box. A dibbuk box is a blessed box in which Jewish rabbis performed exorcism and imprisoned the demonic being inside
You need to do the Alice in Chains song “God Am”. I would love to hear your thoughts on that song. I am a christian who often struggles with faith and your evaluations of songs otherwise considered blasphemous, gives me hope!
I believe in an interview Courtney inferred that it’s kinda just a song written to be just heavy, and that the lyrics are just something written to support the heavy vibe. They wanted to just write a really heavy song to put in the middle of their in progress album to kinda just slap people with the heavy by surprise. Their “normal” sound is much more a mix of clean and scream vocals.
Hey man as an ex pastor who got ran outta the church for tattoos and piercings I appreciate you you seem so genuine and not really a guy who judges and I love it! I can honestly support you wish the best and hope your channel does great!
Loved the reaction, I've never laughed so hard at a reaction before in my life. Thank you guys for the breakdown (I didn't know what a holy roller was either). Thank you for what you do. God bless.
Please, React to: Sabaton - The Last Stand Is a band that sings about historical events This particular song tells the story of the 189 brave soldiers in the Swiss guard during the sacking of Rome in 1527. Since Charles V, ruler of the holy roman empire couldn’t pay his troops they mutinied and forced their commander to lead them towards Rome where plunder was plentiful. When the invading force entered the vatican pope Clement VII escaped to Castel Sant’Angelo via passetto di Borgo. The few remaining guardsmen gave their lives on the steps to St. Peters Basilica.
Pentecostal religion is typically labeled to be the Holy Rollers. Praying in the spirit. Speaking In Tongues. I am Apostolic Pentecostal. Converted from atheist a year and a half ago. Many amazing things I have Witnessed already. Thank you guys for doing these. I enjoy them. God bless you guys!
I agree...this song is unsaved or even saved people that see the ridiculous pastors who want $$$$...but the few pastor's that teach truth...those are the ones to listen to... Amen
I believe in spirits. My girlfriend was killed. She was a very goofy and playful person. For about 5 months after she passed, I would get poked, playfully tapped on my head, nudged while trying to sleep. I would be watching tv at night and my pillow would be pulled. Open your mind a little bit. Anything Is possible. I didn't believe until then. It did scare me at first until I realized this stuff has never happened to me, it's not hurting me. She was a amazing woman.
There is one other mention of a seraphim in leviticus 23. The sacrifice of two goats, one to God and the lesser one to be the wilderness to be swallowed by azazel, who is a seraphim.
How would you feel to reacting to an actual Satanic band? I would be suuuper interested to hear your reactions and have you dive into lyrics for "Behemoth- Blow Your Trumpets Gabriel"
Actual Satanists are way less scary than preachers from Hell on evangelical TV. With every lie and demand for cash for their private jets and support for hate cult politicians...it's like they took a bite of your soul and shat it into Hell's gold toilet direct. By contrast to that, songs about your personal responsibility for yourself as an autonomous being are just not scary at all. That's what actual Satanists are about, if you read Crowley etc it's sort of enlightenment seeking in Buddhist sense but with Western magic imagery. Which they label Satan because that's who Christians blamed magic on. And like all religion to get the adherents shunned by the rival cult lol. People who sacrifice animals etc are just jerks. Most Wiccans I ever met were vegans.
If you enjoyed, please check out their other stuff aswell - you guys won't regret! With or without a video, that's your decision, but just listen to them :) I enjoyed listening to your discusion afterwards as always. And I liked that you also had a look at the lyrics! Spiritbox is killing it right now. Their style and approach for releasing music is very unique. Holy Roller really counts to their more heavier songs, no, it definitely is the heaviest song they've released yet. Courtney LaPlante and Mike Stringer, also husband and wife, created this project "Spiritbox" in 2016/2017 after their former band iwrestledabearonce (IWABO) disbanded (and yea, they did some other stuff there which is worth checking out aswell). In general, they deliver the perfect mix of heavy and melodic. Courtney's voice and vocal range is amazing, she's not only able to scream and growl like in Holy Roller - you will be surprised for sure. Everything they produce is perfectly going together, melodic and heavy tuned riffs, groovy bass lines, beautiful and harsh vocals. I think their song "Rule of Nines" is a perfect introduction to get a nice overview for Spiritbox - you should check that one out! Always there to give you some insights and more information about the band if you want to! Hope to see you in the next one including Spiritbox again - I'll be there! Cheers!
I thought it was really funny when you make fun of "EVP" and call it "silliness".. "it takes a great deal of faith"... Oh my.. so ironic. LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Literally made my night. Thank you :)
EVPs are silly. But so is believing in god. But if it helps people or gives them hope or makes them feel better about certain things then I'm fine with it. I only take issue with it when I see people feeling guilty or being scared or it being used to scam or manipulate people.
Voice in the Violence by Wolves at the Gate. Y’all did Fathers Bargain a little while back. One of their more popular songs now, but great for that reason. They are about to release a Redux of Voice in the Violence in early October 2020.
The singer and screamer Courtney has said this is song is about people who use religion to manipulate and control others. The visuals however are a omage to a horror movie called Midsommar released in 2019. It's about a couple travel to Sweden to visit their friend's rural hometown for its fabled midsummer festival, but what begins as an idyllic retreat quickly devolves into an increasingly violent and bizarre competition at the hands of a pagan cult. Where in the movie they manipulate those around then until either they believe or when they commit any form of blasphemy are promptly killed off.
Great vid! Please react to Theocracy - Mirror of Souls. A masterpiece of christian progressive metal. It has a lot of discussion material, very deep and thoghtful
I know some guys in a metal band that garnered a bit of attention. I wonder your take on there song called “If they’re not counted, count me out”. The band is called “Being as an Ocean” and this is off the album “Dear G-d”. Great band. I was raised christian but fell away for a minute. Current state of things has opened my mind again. Had a great talk with the lead singer of this band about Christianity years ago. This song is similar to bits of our discussion about a God who would allow or even create a Hell.
I didn't care for the video 😳 (edit) Im seeing the imagery and combining it with the lyrics.... It seems to be a willing submission to something dark or as I like to put it "a lesser god" (demon hunter reference ;) Sooooo... I would say that I don't have intentions of listening to this band in the future.
Not sure if anyone said this, but the song is inspired by Jim Jones and his cult. Also it reflects spiritual opportunism when people perfect religions to scare others into doing what they want.
Thank you for reviewing this one, I recently discovered this band and I just can't get enough, I absolutely love Courtney's vocals. However as a believer in Christ, I do confess that this song does indeed rock!, but it makes my discernment alarm go off. I don't really understand the meaning of the lyrics and have been curious about a pastors opinion. Thanks for doing this. For the record, if this is all you did listen to from them, she also sings very pretty in other songs, my favorite by the band is called Rule Of Nines, where she both sings beautifully and growls. Your "It Is Finished" shirt is awesome, btw!
The Bible verified the existence of ghosts. And there is a scientific belief that since everything has energy and frequency, the evp boxes are suppose to tune into the same frequency as ghosts or spirits this allowing them to speak directly to people through the spirit box !
This is probably their heaviest song. Atleast that ive heard. This was my intro to them as well a couple months ago. They are from Vancouver Island Canada. You should react to Blessed Be by Spiritbox! Much more melodic and also lots of symbolism and great visuals!.
You should try Belcarra out (why people are not listening Full albums anymore, huh?!), which is their Heaviest and also other ways easily Best track! :-)
One thing I think I've noticed (if anyone could confirm, that would be lovely) is that "stand to the left of me, in paradise" is referring to Gestas the impenitent thief who was crucified to the right of jesus. Just an idea at least
So I got a question for Robert with relation to Catholics and what I heard from a Catholic radio video on RUclips... A catholic radio host talks about how Protestants are wrong with the “sola fide” and bring up the book of James as a rebuttal, saying that faith without works is dead. Would you say they’re wrong or misled by what they believe about those who believe in faith alone?
Nick A. Although I’m not Robert, as another Protestant I can provide a rebuttal to their point. I think we can all agree that since the Bible is the Word of God, it does not contradict itself. Other parts of the Bible (Ephesians 2:9, for example) explicitly say that it is not through works we are saved, but by faith. Therefore the interpretation must be incorrect, I understand why they would incorrectly interpret James’ words, but I’ve found an answer for what James is saying here. What James means when he says that faith without works is dead, is that when someone says they are a true Christian, but they don’t commit genuinely good works and are just unrepentant bad people, they aren’t a Christian. Good works are the fruit of faith, the side effect of redemption, not the cause of it. If the side effects are not present, then the cause is not.
I didn’t know “holy rolling” was a thing 😂 that’s......scary. Kind of reminds me of the in church “exorcisms” and “healings.” Like the seizure-type crap. Anyway, great video and reaction as always!
I love how you dove into Isaiah 6! Have you read "The Holiness of God" by R.C. Sproul? He dives into the meaning of Isaiah 6 very deeply, its one of my favorite books.
I didn't know about what "holy roller" or "spiritbox" meant, good explaining that! :) I see her meaning maybe that what you do here matters; don't push religion and neglect treating others in the here and now, among the meaning of being hypocritical. Also, as a Roman Catholic, praying to the saints or Mary is idolatry, you're right. Though, Catholics do not pray to them but through them. To intercede though them to assist out prayers to Christ. We believe that saints are still our brothers and sisters in Heaven, alive and close to the Father and Son. Sorry for the long response. Great unpacking of this song, thank you!
How so? It's talking about the perils of believing blindly, specifically about Jim Jones. It might not be christian per se, but it is all about manipulative demagogues.
Interesting video. Surprised to learn that it was a woman singing all of it. As always I will request As I Lay Dying pioneers of metalcore. Or Oh Sleeper

Holy Roller sits in the garden we fled
Blood into wine, take my body instead
Holy Roller sits in the garden we fled
Blood into wine, take my body instead
Holy Roller
Stand
To the left of me
In paradise
Holy Ghosts will
Born of blood
In seraphim
To grip the Nazarene
Crown of God
You wear it thin
To come and rapture me
Holy Roller sits in the garden we fled
Blood into wine, take my body instead
Holy Roller sits in the garden we fled
Blood into wine, take my body instead
Stand
To the left of me
In paradise
Holy Ghosts will
Fade
Into oblivion
Like a blade
Falling slowly
Curse the holy down
And when I die, you won't pray for me

Yep, specially in Belcarra, which´s easily their other ways Best track tooh. ;-) :-)
Spirit box is also a translation of a the Yiddish term of Dibbuk box. A dibbuk box is a blessed box in which Jewish rabbis performed exorcism and imprisoned the demonic being inside
I love how you can always find a way to make songs relevant and an opportunity to spread the gospel. Keep up the good work. I love you guys.
This riff is just so insane! I could listen to it forever
Love the Jim Jones/Midsommar references. How easily people are corrupted by religion.
The song is about Jonestown. She just stated it during a livestream.
You need to do the Alice in Chains song “God Am”. I would love to hear your thoughts on that song. I am a christian who often struggles with faith and your evaluations of songs otherwise considered blasphemous, gives me hope!
Such a good song! I second this!
Yo, I think it’d be cool to see you guys react to “Ash” or “Lesser Gods” from Demon Hunter’s last album. Great lyrics and instrumentals
There's still a Radio Shack on Orange Ave across from the SoDo. Most of their services is done online now though.
Hey man as an ex pastor who got ran outta the church for tattoos and piercings I appreciate you you seem so genuine and not really a guy who judges and I love it! I can honestly support you wish the best and hope your channel does great!
I've been obsessed with this band recently. I hope you guys delve deeper down the rabbit hole.
Loved the reaction, I've never laughed so hard at a reaction before in my life. Thank you guys for the breakdown (I didn't know what a holy roller was either). Thank you for what you do. God bless.
"Behold the Crown" or "Lost in the Static" by After the Burial and "Deceiver" or "Out if Control" by The Ghost Inside
ATB is my favorite!!! id love to see them do lost in the static
I like how open minded you guys are and its really nice to see your analysis of it and to learn biblical things myself :D
Please, React to: Sabaton - The Last Stand
Is a band that sings about historical events
This particular song tells the story of the 189 brave soldiers in the Swiss guard during the sacking of Rome in 1527.
Can you type in tongues?
Lol I’m dying 😂
His face scrunches up every time she starts screaming again
Thanks for turning me on to them. Needed this after a long day at work
Blessed Be is my favorite song to listen to recently.
Thank you. Enjoyed the conversation.
Courtney has phenomenal clean voice too. Please do more Spiritbox.
I do not know musical terms to well. But that falling rhythm into the breakdown is so pleasing to my ear.
You really shoud react to ''Blessed Be'' by her ! it's awesome ! Good review as always
I don’t know if this band/lead singer (Courtney LePlante) is religious or not, but I do know that she said in an interview that she grew up in church.
You guys need to listen to their new track. You'll see her clean singing and the emotion that's packed into it. It's called Constance
React to Slaughter To Prevail “demolisher”
Lol I don’t think there ready for that
Oh no. they ready lol
I like how the pastor was making a disturbed face but couldn’t help enjoying the music!
How would you feel to reacting to an actual Satanic band? I would be suuuper interested to hear your reactions and have you dive into lyrics for "Behemoth- Blow Your Trumpets Gabriel"
They did do Square Hammer by Ghost, so I don't think actual Satanic music is going to be scare them away.
Most Wiccans I ever met were vegans.
yeah, would like them to go with some Aosoth or Deathspell Omega, also lyrically.
@@crhu319 you clearly never read Crowley works. Guy is pure evil I don't care what you believe in we should all agree on that
Pastor Rob sitting there cringing I'm sitting here like "I really like thise"!!! Lol
2:36 they did the Say Amen drumbeat.
Extremely hyped about this one!
Cheers!
Funny this was your first experience with them. They are just kind, polite, goofy Canadians, but this video would make you think otherwise.
I thought it was really funny when you make fun of "EVP" and call it "silliness".. "it takes a great deal of faith"... Oh my.. so ironic. LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Literally made my night. Thank you :)
Faith is an intricate part of Christianity as well. I just think it takes waaaay more faith to believe in EVP than it does Christianity.
EVPs are silly. But so is believing in god. But if it helps people or gives them hope or makes them feel better about certain things then I'm fine with it. I only take issue with it when I see people feeling guilty or being scared or it being used to scam or manipulate people.
“Born of blood and seraphim”
Born of man and Angel.
Seraphim are also mentioned in the book of Enoch
Voice in the Violence by Wolves at the Gate. Y’all did Fathers Bargain a little while back. One of their more popular songs now, but great for that reason. They are about to release a Redux of Voice in the Violence in early October 2020.
Spiritbox is a brilliant band. Btw this song sounds nothing like the rest of their songs. They're my favorite band. Amazing.
thank you guys this was amazing
Who is going to get them to do Slaughter to Prevail? That would be good.
She used to sing for a band Called I Wrestled A Bear Once. You guys should listen to another song by Spiritbox. She has great clean vocals too.
I didn't care for the video 😳 (edit) Im seeing the imagery and combining it with the lyrics.... It seems to be a willing submission to something dark or as I like to put it "a lesser god" (demon hunter reference ;)
Sooooo... I would say that I don't have intentions of listening to this band in the future.
Not sure if anyone said this, but the song is inspired by Jim Jones and his cult. Also it reflects spiritual opportunism when people perfect religions to scare others into doing what they want.
Pastor Rob always looks like Leonardo DiCaprio in Django Unchained when a heavy part comes in.
It's basically about religious cult leaders taking advantage of their followers
It’s specifically about Jim Jones and the Jamestown massacre
This is nuts. I legit just discovered this track yesterday. lol
Great job. I enjoyed this video and your breakdown of scripture. God bless
One thing I think I've noticed (if anyone could confirm, that would be lovely) is that "stand to the left of me, in paradise" is referring to Gestas the impenitent thief who was crucified to the right of jesus. Just an idea at least
Thanks! That will be my 5 am alarm tomorrow...
And will be coincidentally my neighbor's alarm too 🙃
So I got a question for Robert with relation to Catholics and what I heard from a Catholic radio video on RUclips...
Hey guys, you should check out Australian Christian Metalcore band For All Eternity. The Song Further From Hate is a good place to start
I love how you dove into Isaiah 6! Have you read "The Holiness of God" by R.C. Sproul? He dives into the meaning of Isaiah 6 very deeply, its one of my favorite books.
Yes. That’s an amazing book!
havent seen yall two since the abr majoring in the minors reaction glad to see yall are good
That was a while ago! Thanks for checking back in!
Yeah some metal🤘🏻
I've never seen pastor Bob look so confused throughout a video before lol
It's her voice the whole time. All her. She said this is the lowest she's probably gotten her voice. Her husband is the guitar in the band
Everyone in here is bowing down to the Advocate and you all don't even realize it. LOL! Now that's funny!!!
??
How so? It's talking about the perils of believing blindly, specifically about Jim Jones. It might not be christian per se, but it is all about manipulative demagogues.
My mom is a metal head my dad can stand it. But he loved your video yay! He is still very religious
Check out the One shot video she did for this song. Shows you her talent
Interesting video. Surprised to learn that it was a woman singing all of it. As always I will request As I Lay Dying pioneers of metalcore. Or Oh Sleeper
Using Holy Roller to introduce someone to Spiritbox is like starting a new video game and straight to the final boss.
You should check out some of their other tracks.
Rule of Nines
Blessed Be
Belcarra
Bleach Bath
Yep, Belcarra would have been so much better (which it is as track a plenty compared to this one of their less good ones but actually kinda boring song).
You’ll have to check out their song Blessed Be or Rule of Nines to hear her amazing clean vocals
Amazing knowlegde about the Holy roller and Spiritbox! Thanks!
