I loved my Zulu game, was incredibly rewarding to get recognition 4 years before game end. Wasn’t no great power but still turned the entirety of South Africa into a very respectable economic power.

I never felt the appeal to play as the Zulu, but since you had the coup mechanic I will explain that. As Sokoto (and probably Zulu) try to get a republican on the armed forces, buff the intelligentia and then if it succeeds, you have a liberal democracy. Afterwards just enact literate voting, and you can force through issues like homesteading. Then you can focus on army and technology which you desperately need. Allying with a great power is the best you can do in this situation. Last tip: Colonizing is a great tool to expand your land, so try that as soon as possible. You may not even be affected by malaria debuffs like the europeans (congo is a good example).

I actually don’t hate the war reps change. You now have to occupy the “homeland” of a country to get it to tick for reps. Basically click on a state and see if it’s their primary culture homeland. That being said you should be able to enforce for your other war goals still and leave out reps

The Zulus clearly had no national or regimental colors. Each warrior carried a huge flag which was made of carefully matched bull hide, with the hair exposed. Thus all the warriors of the same regiment carried an identifying set. With bulls having only black, red, dun or white hair, the differences between regiments had to be effected with the pattern. There were monocolour shields, shields with large patches, speckled shields, etc. In the early days of the Zulu kingdom it was said that regiments could be quite efficiently distinguished from a distance by their shields.

They've got negative capitulation desire, and that increases dramatically when you try to press for reparations, and then decreases when you stop pressing for reparations. Fully agree about the peace deals thing.
I think the peace deal system is so broken do to a mixture of no geopolitical consideration in the diplomatic play restrictions and the way that they decided to use the same war system to represent the wars of the late enlightenment era as well as the modern era with the same exact diplomatic and military functions.

Building that Construction Sector at the very start was a mistake. If you run with just the base 10 construction it's free, but the moment you get any more you have to pay for all of it.

If you can't occupy the enemy capital you shouldn't be asking for war reps. I think war reps shouldn't have that as a condition for them to accept but if you're going to play this game you have to have that in mind otherwise stuff like this will happen.

When you start a new industry chain (I.E steel mill, train, tracks) subsidize the beginning of the chain to allow steel to have money to make money.
If a train needs steel, but the steel company has no money to pay for staff and resources, it cannot produce steel. Admittedly in a real world scenario the train company would pay said steel company, but the train company has no money... Which would get money from the tracks... Which is owned by you. But hey ho, in the game you need to kick start it.
Whenever I start a new mass production of chains like in Russia turning to steel, I subsidies everything for a few months, then allow the market to settle. Once that happens I unsubsidize it all and then if I need to build more of something I can, or if I have too much I can increase the usage of said thing. To be fair, there's no downside to doing this, in the end if a company is making money, it takes no money from you, and if it produces too much making you pay for excess, well... you work on that to get rid of the excess by increasing usage y'know?
(I play wayyyy too many poor nations. Almost took all of Africa with Sodoko before 1900... But by that time I get bored as it's no longer trying to maintain your economy, it's just spam clicking a bunch of things down or going to war and having to deal with the awful war mechanics which is completely unsatisfying)
Oh an fun tip as Sodoko for anyone who wants to play them, attack the nation below with iron/coal. They get protected by denmark or netherlands which matters little, your 70 troops are enough to push their troops to the sea. Hell if you take the country to your west with the sulfur you can also take land from the Danish if you wanted.

The Zulu are able to beat the Boer states way too easily in Vic3. In real life the Boers easily defeated the Zulu and conquered much of their territory right after the start of the game.
