"Corvette class Light Frigate" is only confusing if you keep to the WWII-era USA naming conventions for naval vessels. Space isn't an ocean, there's no reason why naval conventions would apply to spacecrafts.
It is "corvette-class" because of its sizes. It is "frigate" because of its functionality and weapons. So it means that this ship is frigate in sizes of corvette. Simple, right? P.S.: "dreadnought class heavy cruiser" - it is just fat heavy cruiser as it says.
Lol, the Anubis class stealth destroyer is way bigger and has never been shown to be "big", so for a ship of those capabilities, yeah, it´s little, most warships are way bigger like eg the Donnager class and the UN warships that are often not even the size of the Donnager.
this ship is the perfect example of size doesn't matter, it will still fight bigger ships and give a good punch. now if only other sci-fi series could come up with ships like these.
I think shield technology makes ships like these less viable in a lot of sci fi settings. Its hard for a small ship to pose any real threat to a capital ships shields, no matter how well armed for its size. In The Expanse the only real defences are point defence turrets against torpedo's and armor making all ships, even the biggest, quite vulnerable. The stealth ships are actually the best example of a small ship in the expanse which can none the less pose a lethal threat to capital ships. They are armed with much of the same firepower as much larger ships, especially rail guns, and are hard to detect which allows them to get close enough to use it.
Babylon 5 had the Whitestars, small corvette size warships, that through out the series, regularly fought much larger ships and came out victorious for their incredible speed and agility, combined with serious punch for a vessel of their size. Then in Star Trek, there was the most badass ship ever in Star Fleet, the Defiant Class destroyer, AKA The USS Ben Sisko's Mother-F**king Pimphand. A ship that was basically a bunch of guns and torpedo tubes with some engines strapped to them.
I thought it was called Ben MF Siskos Bitchslapper ^^ But its actually classified as an Escort, and the engine was an oversized beast intended for a ship three times the size of the Defiant.
Don Quixote’s horse in Space - tough, durable and quite nice to look at. I usually compare smaller vessels to the Danube Class, and this Corvette comes in at around twice the length and around double the height, but as a ship it does feel better thought through and actually really suitable as the main cast’s vessel. As a spaniard I feel the need to clarify the meaning of the Roci's name. The fucking fandom wiki is wrong about the meaning of "rocinante" and is the first instance I've encountered of systematic corruption in a fandom wiki. It doesn't mean "used to be a workhorse" because for "ante" to mean "before" it has to be a prefix, not a suffix. We call forearms "antebrazos" and "the day before yesterday" is "anteayer". "-ante" as a suffix means "currently performing the referred action", and it's used to convert a nown into an adjective. We'd translate "a galloping horse" as "un caballo galopante". Given that one of the several spanish terms for "workhorse" is "rocín", the true meaning would be "currently a workhorse". It's a fucking pun, people! Just as the names of every other character in the book. The whole point of Quijote's horse being called Rocinante is that the horse hadn't been a workhorse up untill the point in which he rides it. It's a beautifully well used metaphor for the ship, which becomes a "warship for hire" AKA, a workhorse once it's renamed. This whole misconception is detracting from the reader's experience for both El Quijote and The Expanse saga. Don't believe your Spanish teachers, people: I don't presume to understand the subtleties of Shakespeare when the analysis of his works has been explained to me by a non native speaker. Have some respect for the classics. PS: this series, m8. It is the peanut butter and jelly to the bland loaf of bread that is my life. Keep them coming.
Thank you for clearing that up. What you are saying here seems pretty central to the language. If something that was a prefix in my language got used as a suffix people wouldn't understand it at all. When I check the source on fandom wiki is refers to the main wiki. And on the main wiki there is no discussion about this. If you had the time to write in there, maybe with a link to some grammatical rules in spanish you could change this misunderstanding.

Rocinante is like that because the pun is Rocín antes, that is to say, antes rocin (both used to be a rocin, and that he is before all the other rocines of the world), because you can say it both ways in spanish, so no, the wiki is not wrong. Just finished reading the six books. Dropped back in to get a refresher of your great video. The tv series and books are just unbelievably outstanding work.
But why call it a Corvette if its a light frigate? This makes no sense. It only confuses people, and there is already enough confusion with the size and ship classes in space combat/naval combat
Maybe they were trying to slip it past the politicians blocking funding... Like Spurious, Curious and Outrageous. Sorry, Furious, Glorious and Courageous, the 'Large Light Cruisers' that Admiral Jacky Fisher had built when he couldn't get funding for more battlecruisers. "But it's only a little Corvette, not very expensive and great for hunting rattletrap pirates..." While the admirals rub their hands with glee.
You forgot to mention that as the Rocinante this particular Corvette class ship was modified with a keel mounted rail gun because military grade torpedoes were both expensive and hard to source whereas tungsten slugs for the rail gun to fire were relatively cheap and easy to get.
Cool - and thanks for not including the spoilers... my FAVORITE ship BUT - boy does it chew though the ammo! ...and in one of the episodes they were literally stacking the ammo in the hallways in anticipation of combat... kinda reminds you of the DS9 Defiant - all you would want it to be - but over-powered can have drawbacks...
If something docks with 10 light cruisers, it's not Batteship of any sort. It's some kind of moving repair platform, and it can have any military application only if it has FTL drive and light cruisers don't. If they don't have FTL, they may use space for shields, weapons, armor, etc.
Why Halcyon light Cruisers? They are pretty obsolete. Only reasons they were used in the Human-Covenant war was due to the UNSC running out of ships and because their design allows them to take a tremendous amount of damage. Only ship of that class that can really offer up much of a fight is the Pillar of Autumn, and that was because it was retrofitted with several upgrades
The Halcyons were refitted for the Covenant war making them a far more viable warship, but mostly they were being used as troop transports, for their huge internal space and survivability.
So interesting thing I've noticed about the Roci's PDCs compared to, say, the Donnagers. Where the Donnager's guns operate like traditional gatling-style guns (the entire barrel cluster rotates, each barrel firing when it reaches the point on the circle where the chamber is) the Roci's actually don't rotate. The barrels are all stationary but fire in sequence, like there are actually six (or however many barrels each PDC actually has) separate guns with their own chambers strapped together.

It can be a corvette and a frigate both. As far as I know a frigate is designed for long range missions without assistance. And can be of any size from a corvette up to a light cruiser.
the Expanse is in my Opinion at the moment the Top of the Sci Fi Genre in TV, except Movies like Star Wars or Star Trek... Its more realistic take on the material is so intense and thrilling and threatening. Great Show, i highly recommend Sci Fi Fans to watch. and it has Great Ships...
I love how the corvette-class is meant for use in groups with an excess of marines, and yet the most famous example of one has a crew of 5 and almost never any backup
The shape and profile of these ships are really similar to the Kushan Battlecruisers of Homeworld. To such a degree that it almost feels like a direct homage.
I wish you would do size comparisons to something we can relate to. Even after watching both seasons, and reading 5 out of 6 books, and watching your video, I still have no idea how big the Rocinante or any MCRN Corvettes are. Also, the Rocinante has a rail gun now!
46 meters is not that long and if you seen the series some of you can agree based on footage inside is seems a lot longer than that. Just the bridge area looks like 20m long counting where they keep their repair tools, gear storage, crew cabins and eating area is at least 30m and I'm not including the reactor, engine, small bay and the area where Holton and Naomi banged!
In the book, they give a reason for the name (obviously) Rocinante means No Longer a WOrk Horse, basically a hidden meaning that Holden is now his own man and will do what he pleases.
A more specific video on the Roci will come eventually, but right now the show is a pretty long-way behind the books and there are some modifications and changes that i'd rather not spoil for non-readers, you can expect it at some point though. :D

This ship is proof that size isn't everything.
Some of my favorite ships are on the small size. The Sovereign class star trek, Tachi the expanse, the Stalwart Class Frigate Halo, The Normandy SR2 Mass Effect, and one of my all time favorites is the BC304 Daedalus Class Stargate.
Also the Defiant Class Star Trek
@@808INFantry11X I couldn't agree more. You named some of my own favorite ships in that list.
There's just something incredible with the little boys packing a great punch or some other surprise that just makes them so perfect for protagonist ships
@@shayminthedoctor9663 honestly for me coming from a Navy background I have served on Carriers and had many friend who served and hinestly I wish i could have served destroyers because the ship are better run on smaller vessels.
@@shayminthedoctor9663 they way I see it they light and efficient
In every part of history there is a ship that is legendary from both real and fictional realms of existence.
Great Show, i highly recommend Sci Fi Fans to watch.
and it has Great Ships...
i love how much the 4 of them love their ship
Excellent synopsis..
I love how the corvette-class is meant for use in groups with an excess of marines, and yet the most famous example of one has a crew of 5 and almost never any backup
This thing gives me 1999 HOMEWORLD vibes!
‘Legitimate salvage’
Awesome! More expanse please!
Oh, you cursed RUclips algorithm! How DARE you show me amazing content like this that might make me rewatch The Expanse!
You can see how great this ship is in the third episode of season 6
The shape and profile of these ships are really similar to the Kushan Battlecruisers of Homeworld. To such a degree that it almost feels like a direct homage.
I wish you would do size comparisons to something we can relate to. Even after watching both seasons, and reading 5 out of 6 books, and watching your video, I still have no idea how big the Rocinante or any MCRN Corvettes are. Also, the Rocinante has a rail gun now!
*keel mounted
It also got the coffee machine fixed.
She's a tough little ship.
Smaller than I expected. I figured it would be 100 meters. The show doesn't do scale very well with it's exterior shots.
I think the shot with it in the Donnager shows its scale quite well.
The interior shots do make it seem a lot larger than what it appears like on the outside.
I would have gone with "Screamin' Firehawk" instead of "Rocinante".
Sure, just advertise that it's a gunship.
Why DIDN'T they name her that?
Donkey balls.
Because Don Quixote was a favorite book of Jim Holden. To be honest all he does is fighting windmills. In space.
In the book, they give a reason for the name (obviously) Rocinante means No Longer a WOrk Horse, basically a hidden meaning that Holden is now his own man and will do what he pleases.
One thing the narrator the MCRN Corvette had in copious amounts:
*Plot armor*
The Roci might be my fav ship of all time, in any scifi. And thats coming from a major star wars nerd.
I want to see the battle of Leuctra with the Laconian Navy kicking butt.
The flying chisel with an upside-down coffee cup on the back ;)
Nice ad for MCRN navy. I'll take 10 of those.
love ur videos! can you make one of the spaceship avalon from the passengers movie? thanks. cheers
I love this ship. She is my siren song.
Please do the hiigaran battlecruiser from Homeworld!
i love these videos, i wish you would do the SDF1 from Robotech
Could we get a video on the Babylon whitestar or the Hammerhead fighters from Space Above and Beyond?
I hope they put earth ships next season.
She also has a lift!
Railgun!! Railgun!! Railgun!!!
A Legitimate Salvage
One of the greatest ships since the Millenium Falcon...
Any possibility you could do a review of a Tyranid bioship or in you Vs. series a battle between the Borg and the Tyranids?
