Do not be so hard on yourself. I spent my 20s working my way through college, with the idea of "joining the real world". I found out, the so called real world is not all that great. I am in my mid 30s, I live with my parents, I live in a very expensive city where it takes 2 incomes to rent a small apartment (I live in a house my grandparents bought in the 1950s for about 1/100th of what it cost now). I teach ESL online and use that money for food and traveling. If a person is getting a job because they want to "grow up and become their own adult" I say, tread with caution, with high cost of housing and a not so good economy, its going to be rough. If you are getting a job, because that job will give them personal satisfaction, then I say go for it. edit: I am going to go a bit doomer here and say, I think the USA is changing very quickly, with the 2007 recession being phase 1 and Covid 19 just being another phase. People are finding it harder to keep believing that working hard is enough to enter the middle class in America. The economy might very well collapse, I say, focus on what you enjoy, the real world will still be there, for better or worse.
