I learned to fly in the military and we always had our “ALSE” (aviation life support equipment) gear for every flight. When I got out and started flying in the civilian world I felt naked without it so I built my own similar to yours. 👍👍
I also were a vest on occasion but more for insulation rather than storage. What I've found was that packing all that stuff into a vest would not allow me to strap properly, and if I'd hit an obstacle on landing I'd have some of the things pressed on my body. The solution for me was to wear military style trousers with leg pockets, and that's what I use for storing those multi tools etc.. Those I need in flight go to the left pockets, emergency and auxiliaries to the right.
Love the flight vest! All your reasons are great reasons to wear it. I'm going to wear mine even if it's just to hold the cell phone, but adding a small first aid kit and my knife is brilliant, I'll keep a sandwich in there too lol!
You're so right, trying to access my phone from my jeans pockets is ridiculously difficult.
As a former military helicopter crewmember we always wore helmets nomex flight suit and gloves along with leather boots. Our vest held radio, stobe light, flares for our service revolver and other bits.
Happened to come up with the same solution for the same reasons-using a fishing vest.
For sure, if I flew with steel tubing a few inches from my head, I would wear a helmet. I wear a kayak helmet when sailing in rough waters and there is almost nothing near my head. But statistics show that head injuries are the leading cause of death, only after drowning. And its often a head injury that leads to a person drowning. I live in a state with no motorcycle helmet laws. No surprise, head injuries from not wearing a helmet is the leading cause of death. People are "free" to do what they want.
I had a forced landing a couple of years ago in a small recreational aircraft. Bystanders filmed it and the story went viral on the news. I was wearing a flight suit for exactly the reasons you gave. I copped a lot of snarky comments on social media, I didn’t join in but was happy to see people defending the safety equipment argument. After crawling out of a plane wreck even if it doesn’t burn it’s amazing what you leave behind when you’re bustled off to hospital for checks.
Yeah it's like insurance, rather have it and not need it than the other way around. I've seen with my own eyes the protection from a flash fire even a thin layer of clothing provides (provided it's not nylon or synthetic), and the damage and the months/years of pain on exposed skin areas. That's not even mentioning the flightsuit/vest benefits not related to fire. Thus I simply don't care about snarky comments, and I salute anyone else who doesn't either. Glad you got out of the forced landing ok!

Absolutely agree with you. I wear a vest for the same reasons, with the same equipment. I fly over the Rocky mountains of Canada quite often and survival if downed, will depend on being able to look after yourself for hours, if not days, depending on where it happened, possibly in extremely hostile environment. One will need more than the vest content, and those will be in cargo, but if you cant get out if the plane, or at the very least have your Inreach/Spot with you when out, you might never be found. There are multiple cases of planes disappearing in these mountains and never found.

I think its a good idea. I have a vest somewhere that I might just make use of - just as you have.. Who cares what other people think. Safe flying.

I think if someone is discouraging the wearing of a flight suit they may infact not be pilots themselves. If they actually are a pilot I would question thier overall mindset and how this could effect thier operation and conduct in regards to the safety of themselves and others.

Nice airplane. The vest is practical but possibly a snag hazard compared to a flight suit. The vest makes you look like you’re going fishing which, in your airplane, is perfectly appropriate. I got annoyed with climbing in and out of flight suits and now wear cargo pants instead. Actually, I wear cargo pants all the time. I’ve got some over water flights coming up and I might add the vest.
Yeah I don't much like the vest, but feel "naked" without it after using it so long, and it serves an important purpose for me. I've looked at a few flight suits but none have the amount of pockets I want. The vest will have to do till I find the perfect flightsuit. I've considered cargo pants as well.

So. You’re wearing half a flight suit. That is silly. Wear your bottoms too. Space for more patches and snacks.
The full flight suits I've seen typically has fewer pockets than just the vest. Also I have some cargo pants with many pockets but I hate that feeling when the pockets are loaded with anything heavier than a snack bar.
