Part 1: • TK Kirkland: Katt Will...
    --------
TK Kirkland continued to speak out against the notion that an entertainer can be an industry plant. He emphasized the need to see African Americans who can greenlight a movie in Hollywood. The conversation shifts to Taraji P. Henson, who, despite having a successful career as a co-star, has not garnered much success as a leading actress, hindering her pay. Vlad advises that established artists like Henson should make their own films to exert control over budgets and their pay. However, TK and Vlad highlighted the fault was not entirely hers but partly her agency for underselling her as a costar and accepting a lower budget despite her being the glue to the movies she's in.

I don't know why Vlad keeps referencing peoples net worth from what he's seen on the internet to make an argument. As a multi millionaire himself, Vlad knows damn well that published celebrity net-worth's are at best grossly inaccurate unless you're talking about the Forbes list and Bloomberg wealth tracker which Taraj P Henson is not going to be on.

The agent does more deals with the studio than just her or one client. Studio and producers tell agent that if you want other jobs and other clients to work with us you gotta knock them all down to keep your relationship with us. Agent works with the studios, not for the client. Client is shorter term than the overall relationship with the studio. Not much different than two realtors negotiation the sale and buy but putting the seller and buyer second in importance. The two agents are working together to make more for each other . Don’t get me started on how prosecutors and lawyers talk to judges behind close doors. It’s a crime what they do to the defendants and plaintiffs.

So dope that Jason’s mother negotiated that deal. The average person would’ve taken the $2M and rode off in to the sunset. And not only that, how many of us are in a position to turn down $2M? Although it’s common-sense on her behalf, common-sense is not always common. I’ve made a mistake similar to this, not to the tune of $2M but somewhat similar. An artist - that I worked on some production for - reached out to negotiate the publishing. I gave him 100% of it. Turns out that he was a superstar in his native country and the song went big. It was a terrible mistake but it forced me to make better decisions.

What has Taraji really done??? Empire doesn't count because that's television. Hidden Figures doesn't count because that was an ensemble cast. Benjamin Button doesn't count because that was a Brad Pitt vehicle. Tyler Perry projects can't be measured because most of his movies no matter who the actors are makes around the same average. That leaves Taraji's outstanding resume with low box office, break even, and failure movies.
Every actor has to negotiate their fee and Taraji doesn't have the box office record to demand high fees. Benjamin Button was her first big budget/ big box office film. Benjamin Button was Brad Pitts 20th movie that made at least $100 million. Of course she is not going to make anything close to him or anything close to B list pay.

My pushback for the Benjamin button point with the budget will be. The agent made the right decision for that role for her to take for the money. Will smith told a story in his book about the same situation. Will was offered the lead for eight heads in a duffel bag for 10 million and his agent convinced him to turn it down because he wanted to be taken seriously as an actor and be a big movie star then months later he was offered six degrees of separation for 300k which in turn led to him being looked at as a potential leading character. Rumors suggest that Henson initially sought a $500,000 salary but ended up accepting $150,000 for her -co-starring- supporting role in the 2008 film "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button." Notably, the movie had a budget spanning from $150 million to $167 million, and Henson earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress due to her outstanding performance. Considering her current prominent position in the industry and the high-profile roles she now takes on, it seems that her compensation may not fully align with her remarkable talent and the prestige of the roles she secures. Is this a result of shortcomings in her management or indicative of the challenges related to race and gender within the film and television industry?

Taraji fired her team and is still not getting paid what her white counterparts with lesser resumes get!!
She gets paid less than white tv background actresses (Big Bang Theory, 2 Broke girls) get when she’s starred in big budget films, starred in blockbusters and starred in two tv shows. She’s won awards and has multiple nominations.
Google that conversation with Octavia Spencer and Jessika Chastain where Jessica always wanted to work with her and said they should get paid as much as the men do when women are the stars of movies and Jessica was surprised when Octavia had to tell her about the huge salary gap between Black and white women!!

If you make a movie with an Asian male as a lead in Nigeria, it likely will not do so well. Black people would rather go to a Viola Davis movie than a Meryl Streep one. The market dicates demand and pay. That is life. If there is no demand, you can't force producers to pay people that will not bring in audiences and make the project profitable? Why would they throw money down the drain? You would do the same. They are looking to make a profit, not to be fair to everyone and lose money. @@iamrysheem

I think alot of these so called business people are just lazy and scared to show that they arent actually good at business and are just managing a business that someone else already built.
You would think their is no market for 3d movies until a avatar movie comes out.
Somebody made a movie that was worth seeing in 3d and now you have one of the biggest movies of all time. Everybody else just tried to make a quick buck. So nobody went out and saw those other 3d movies.
When you keep consistently only making low budget bad movies for women or minorities the market now equates that as being bad before it even comes out.
If you give every great script to a white man to make for a largely white cast than of course no market exist for women or minorities. So you now have a situation where that cant command as much money.

When you actually take the time to look into the folks you consider successful in this world of entertainment and media you'll get why "selling your soul" is always brought up.

I said the same exact thing about Taraji P Henson only getting $150,000 from a movie that had a budget of $167 million. That’s insane and it’s ridiculous and disrespectful for them to offer her $150,000 and she is the costar. So for Vlad saying that she shouldn’t say anything is completely out of line and he’s also disrespectful. It was clear it was about Race.

People dont realize that the budget is for the ENTIRE movie production. All the PRE and POST production work. The people that feed you during your filming are paid from that budget. The people who put on your make-up are paid from that budget. The sound, lighting, editing, promotion, travel, extras, and rental people have to be paid from that budget. So it isn't about the actors alone when it comes to that budget! As Ice Cube said, "Some people have to be paid every day." So lose me on that. The budget has to pay for EVERYTHING, not just the actors!

A physician assistant makes 150k without overtime. I don’t like the fact that she did all this talking and people was supporting her then she backtracked and was like Oprah was helpful. She made herself look bad, who is going to want to work with her cause the movie/ musical flopped due to her crying and then comes back and was like go see the film cause it’s a good film and it was over shadowed. Like what?😮

I don't think these guys understand what's going on. For a black female actress it's very hard to get a role in Hollywood. It's hard for white women to get paid well so imagine how it might be for other racial groups? Sometimes it's better to just get paid- knowing you have something coming in.

    • @jesussinaloa9300

She played herself. There are only 4 or 5 black females of the caliber they would hire. She didn't want to take the risk of loosing the role to those other 4 black females so she didn't push it and take the risk. End of story. It's all about how much you believe in yourself and market value and willingness to walk away if not compensated properly

@@jesussinaloa9300 Remember Terrance Howard? They removed him from the MCU for asking for too much. He played the character and they found a replacement. Don Cheadle replaced him and he went on to do 7 movies plus TV shows and voice acting for War Machine. Don Cheadle probably took less than what Terrance Howard was asking for but it probably paid off in the long run. Walking away from certain opportunities will screw you in the long run. But you don't know which ones will end up screwing you. Hindsight is 20-20. It's easy to say that she shouldn't have taken that role but she probably took it expecting it to catapult her career. It didn't.
