    A tip I learned recently - imagine you're running late for work and don't want to get in trouble but there's a police car right behind you. So you maintain alertness and aim for best progress, but always staying safe and legal.

    As someone who is trying to get back into driving after a long break I find these videos very informative and helpful. I don’t consider myself an advanced driver. But, someone interested in improving and learning. The Mini looks to be a great car to drive.

    This is where giving a commentary can help, because you're explaining to the examiner why you are taking a certain line of action.

    Your videos are very helpful, thank you. Can I point out however that police are not exempt from speed limits. There are circumstances where the law allows emergency vehicles to exceed speed limits where necessary. Police vehicles are also unlikely to be stopped, but in law they are bound by the same limits as every other road user.

    Here's a good one relating to 5:00
    Last weekend I was caught in small tailback from a minor incident in lane 1 of the A14. About 95% of people got into lane 2 over *half a mile* before the obstruction. I of course merged in the last 100m. I just couldn't believe how much road space was unnecessarily wasted in the name of an imaginary 'rule' that exists only in people's heads.

    Great video with practical and sane suggestions on how to balance speed and safety!
    One question: At 10:58 you start into a section of road with significant(ish) bends between stone walls, and there appears to be no-one coming the other way, would using both lanes for stability be appropriate here? (i realise you are not travelling anywhere near any limits of adhesion or stability) There looks to be a fair amount of standing water on the road at the apexes of those bends, so a straighter line through that water could help ensure stability?
    What about if someone is following you? I feel loath to use the offside sometimes with people behind me because it could tempt them into the same action, and they are unlikely to be observing quite as well as most drivers drive by "follow my leader" these days ;-( and because i think people see this use of the opposing lane, and despite it being completely clear with no hazards, thing "maniac"....

      Hi Max, great to hear from you! It isn’t really appropriate to cross the centre line at that particular spot, as the rise in elevation just before it means your view arrives later than you might expect. It may be a gopro perspective thing, but the road (the A6 just south of Penrith) is very wide at that point and it doesn’t feel like there is any benefit in using the full width of the road just there. Thats not to say you shouldn’t, as long as you take into account whether it’s safe, legal and gives you an advantage. In this case, there would be no real advantage.
      Others extend “safe, legal, advantage” to “safe, legal, advantage and perception” (SLAP), meaning you should consider other road users’ perception of your move offside, including whether someone will choose to follow. I worry less about the perception bit, but I will take it into account occasionally.

    An overtake is not always mandatory and may not be possible, but if you can get one in, it will score you extra "Brownie Points" !

    Hi John how do you Anticipate the lights turning to red

    • @701Adventures
      @701Adventures Год назад +1

      If the lights are working correctly and let’s assume they are if they’ve changed from red to green, there’s a reasonable assumption that they will change back to red. Therefore you can anticipate that they will change and may well do so as you are approaching them so be ready and prepared to act accordingly if/when they change upon your approach.
