  • It is arguably the biggest disaster in seafaring history: the sinking of the Wilhelm Gustloff on 31 January 1945. Torpedoed by a Soviet submarine, the German ship sank - sending more than 9,000 people to their deaths in the icy waters of the Baltic Sea. In addition to examining the background leading to the catastrophe, the documentary also probes into some of the unsolved mysteries concerning the sinking of the Gustloff.

Of the estimated 10,000 people on board the Gustloff, only 1,239 could be registered as survivors, making this the sinking with the highest death toll in maritime history.

What Germans could expect after what they had done in Russia...

@@kissthis5361It was a war crime committed by Russian what's never investigated, nobody tried them for that worst marine tragedy they were made by intention!!! They hated Germans, that's why!!! And Churchill want see postwar Germany as British colony, that another reason they were never tried for that one of worst of war crimes

Should Russians have loved Germans after what they had done to their people during Nazi occupation of the USSR? I could tell smth about the atrocities they committed in my native city in 1942-43. My grandparents were in their thirties at the moment and told me a lot of what they witnessed in those grim years.

@@kissthis5361Still this was a war crime, it doesn't matter what's German did to Russians, but that's doesn't meant they shouldn't not tried for that... Germans received Denazification and Nuremberg trials, BTW, German killed 6 million jews, do Jews hated afterwards Germans!??? Did Jews sent even tiny Israeli warship to sunk German flagged ship after WW2!??? So that's no excuse for Russian, no matter what bad things happens in their homeland in WW2, who BTW Russian started too...

Saw episode one and now two. An incredible movie experience about the Gustloff disaster. One can understand why so many died as the ship went down fast, trapping many inside her and many more died in the frozen Baltic Sea. A truly sad event to be brushed over like it was. Thanks for posting part two. Joe S

Some twenty years later the Russian comandant testified he didn't want to sink the Gustloff knowing it was full of civilians but received radio orders to do it anyway.

MV Wilhelm Gustloff was a German military transport ship that was sunk on 30 January 1945 by Soviet submarine S-13 in the Baltic Sea while evacuating civilians and military personnel from East Prussia and the German-occupied Baltic states, and German military personnel from Gotenhafen (Gdynia) as the Red Army advanced. By one estimate, 9,400 people died, making it the largest loss of life in a single ship sinking in history.

9,400 people died, making it the largest loss of life in a single ship sinking in history. I just feel hate when watching some NS officials mess around. They still speak the same way, I was so kind to discuss with some of them at the beginning of the Ukrainian war. Just disgusting.

It was the Gustloff's captain who sent the ship into deep water and turned on the lights. Movie makers screwing things up just to have a drama.

This was not Russia, but the Soviet Union.
According to today's interpretation, Alexander Ivanovich Marinesko, the captain of the S-13 - and therefore the murderer of almost 10,000 innocent women and children - was a Ukrainian.
To nie była Rosja, ale Związek Radziecki.
Według dzisiejszej interpretacji Aleksander Iwanowicz Marinesko, kapitan S-13 - a zatem morderca prawie 10 000 niewinnych kobiet i dzieci - był Ukraińcem.
