I totally get the complaint about the missing guylines and pegs. But complaining about the lines being too long is one hell of a weird primary complaint in my opinion. For the pegs its perfect for tying it around rocks on harder ground. Its not like that paracord weights anything worth mentioning. I suspect its a little bit low even with the rock. Agai i generally do agree but just a pet peeve.
Go and watch Outlawed Landscapes, he’ll show you how to put this up and a few mods. Plus another of his vids shows it in stormy coastal Scottish weather compared to a Lanshan 2. I find it odd you complain the paracord is too long, trim it as required and you have spare cord for more peg-out points. Also, as to it being a high quality tent, it isn’t, otherwise it’d be megabucks like an MLD Duomid etc
I found this one of the easiest tents to pitch, even in bad weather. I put shock-cord on the inner as guy lines so less faffing, my hiking pole is just long enough at 1.4m (I put it at 1.35). Some shelters need seam sealing, some companies offer it for a fee, though my Trekkertent came ready sealed which was nice. I do agree they should seal it at that price. I got the 2person inner from Ali as well but that only just fits, I think the F6a would be better for that. The negatives for me are the silnylon is very saggy in wet weather, the inner can be flappy and a bit finnicky to pitch. Like many other backpackers, I use my own pegs instead of those supplied, and have changed all the guy-lines. Not sure if I would pay the full price for it, though atm it £220 which isn't too bad. The positives are that big porch is perfect in bad weather, tent is quite easy to pitch, its good in windy/wet weather, you can cook in the porch.
I agree with you that it needs considerable modification and upgrade. I have followed outlawedlandscapes' instructions and did some further mods. I love the tent. I'm not sure if it is fair to call it a premium tent. To get similar performance in space, wind resistance, water resistance and weight from an actual premium tent manufacturer, you are talking £600+ and not the £200 for this tent. So, for £400 I happily add some guylines and buy some additional premium stakes. With all the upgrades I have made, the tent cost me £270 and about 2h of work.
I cut the long guy lines in half and used the other halves for the 5 pull out points at the bottom A half tennis ball works well to support the pole 135cm works fine for me as a working height Yes higher is better
You are not supposed to clip the inner into those plastic o-rings on the outer. Instead you have to use the long lines to hook it into the tent pegs. Also if you use two extra pegs for the front lines of the inner, you will get a perfectly pitched inner and there is absolutely no need for additional hooks to the outer shell.
Everything u say is true. But once u get it set up how u like it its an ace shelter, it sheds the wind brilliantly. Cut the corner guys down and use the offcuts for the middle guys. It's only a cheap tent really but after a bit of fiddling i love mine. Been using it for a year and I would buy another in a heart beat. Look forward to seeing you out In it 👍
I purchased a very similar tent ( only it has a flue window for a stove) .Probably made in the same factory in China, being at arround 130 dollars and seam sealed. I had the same feeling as you do, not all the stakes needed, internal pole supplied too short for a cuple inches, or 5cm, wich makes it a droopy inner tent. Cheaper than 190#'s, at any rate
I like it! Yeah I agree with you not supplying enough pegs is becoming a trend. The inner looks perfect for 2-3-4 season camping. Odd not having the inner tie out points not installed is not exactly great however I’m sure you will sort it out.
It’s as if it fell off the production line halfway down what a shame !!!! If I was the production manager at ALUX I’d be furious what a shame like you always say Adam “always test your kit before your adventure. You say it needs modifications! I’d say it needs FINISHING !
I've used this tent for the past 4 years and it's the best tent I've ever had. I did seam seal it, which is something I've had to do for every tent I've ever owned. The extra long lines are there so you can cut off some of the extra for the guy points but the tent will work just fine without the guys. The inner tent doesn't need to be clipped but I can't say much else as I hadn't noticed those loops before. I understand the feelings of it being unfinished, but I've never had a tent that actually kept me dry in a prolonged rain storm until this one either. This tent is a bit tricky to setup right but once you get the hang of it, it should serve you well.
I've probably spent about 2 hours mucking about with it but now it's good to go. A little frustrating as I'm used to being able to go out and use the tent the day I buy it! Now it's right though I think it's going to serve me well 👌
I have owned the F6a version of this tent for over two years now and use it with the same v4 inner you showed. The F6a is a bit taler and wider, but the same design otherwise. I swapped the aluminum tent pegs out for larger black nylon ones, that work much better in the woods. My only issue with this tent is, that it is hard to put it up in a clean, tight fashion. I even bought a special long tent pole for it. Would I buy it again? No, I would buy the F6e version, that is ready to be used as a hot tent.
I purchased one of these any came to the same conclusions as in your vid, I always struggled to get a taught pitch of the inner and to get those corners to say upright. Great tent at this price point if 85% only complete.
I replied in another comment, but maybe this also helps you: "You are not supposed to clip the inner into those plastic o-rings on the outer. Really like this video... thanks for the heads up on any slight issues. I'm planning on purchasing this tent. And now I know what needs doing. Have been looking for ages for a tent for backpacking for me and the misses... something easy to pitch... reasonably lightweight... and good in bad weather.... Was going to purchase the lanshan 2 until I watched a video of the lanshan and this tent side by side in a storm.... And the hexpeak looked really good. So.... cheers mate... Enjoy your tent.... Oh.... like the fact it's reasonably cheap.
I always like to show both positives and negatives as there's usually room for improvement on everything. It's a great tent I just think if the production line was 10 minutes longer it could be perfect!
Another interesting tent, I do like a lightweight tent thatd got a good sized vestibule, although not so sure about the length as 6'3 and have an air pad that raises me 10cm heigher
Weird one that, it looks like a really good tent but the unfinished bits is confusing... manufacturers error maybe? Looks like a decent sized porch for cooking and storing kit. I'll look for a few more reviews, try and see what others are saying, should need to modify a tent before you use it (maybe seam sealing). 🙂
Yeah strange that they don't set it up fully for you 🤔 lucky I checked before taking it out! I saw something about cutting the paracord on the peg points in half and attaching them to the other ones
I do like Luxe tents, although I think I'll be sticking with my Mini Peak II.........that's a cracking little tent for the warmer months and to be honest looks very similar to that one...apart from the shape and number of pegs 😁
Did you consider the DD Tarp Pyramid tent and its inner tent at all Old Chap? I reckon it does the same thing for a bit less and, knowing DD products, I'm guessing would be a bit more "finished".
Great video thanks. I want to do a couple of overnighter trips with my dog, do you think there is enough space in the inner for an adult and a Labrador? Thanks
I like this tent. I think it's possibly a little little overpriced, but not by much. The materials are good but I think the quality control isn't the best. Lots of loose threads everywhere when I got mine. I wouldn't bother with the inner. It's useless and heavy. I opted just for the main tent and then bought an Ali express inner for £40 and it's half the weight and much better quality. Fits perfect.
Nice idea using a different inner tent I know the one you mean too 👍 I do like the tent though just think they could make that factory line slightly longer to finish it up 😂
I recently sold mine. It's a solid tent with a little modification but I just prefer my trailstar now. I think the v4a is kind of like a "gatekeeper" to the world of lighter weight hiking. It's a good starting point and opens you up to new possibilities away from more "traditional" style tents (which is weird to say because surely the tepee shape is thousands of years old haha)
