Exactly - got my first camera from my dad and then wanted to try fully manual so bought a spotmatic. Go digging up relative's unused cameras to dip your toes in the hobby
I inherited all of my grandfather’s photography equipment when he passed. From one photographer to the next lol and I’ll be sure to pass on these heirlooms to the next family photographer when I pass! 🥰
I recommend asking family members first. Those camera's have a special place and are basically a piece of history. I recently was looking for one since I'm going on a school trip to Berlin (I study photographie and filmmaking). I asked my uncle and he had an olympus 105 mju for me which is just awesome. Great work Teo, you have helped me a lot in my photographie and filmmaking journey.
I agree! I was scouring marketplace for new film cameras and had a dig in my family’s old camera cabinet and voila, a mint Canon Sureshot! You can even ask friends too 😂
I just found a Minolta SR-T102 camera with 4 lenses among my Grandpa's stuff a few weeks ago and it started me to try 35mm photography as an amateur. It is really fun and I feel I can carry on something from him too, it is great feeling. So thumbs up for this comment :)
i asked my parents if they had any film cameras still from when they were younger and my mom came back with a canon AE1. I was shocked as that was the camera I was looking at purchasing beforehand. It's dusty but I think it will still work!!
My dad gave me his Canon A-1 he bought when he was 14. This Camera has seen many places around the world and most inportantly has seen my father grow up. When I hold this camera in my hand, it's like a gentle hug from him. I tried other analogue cameras but this one feels like home.
I've lately gotten into film photography and stubled upon your videos which have been very helpful. What I love most, however, is the vibe your videos have. The music, lighting, your voice. You're my new favorite morning content while drinking my coffee.
I would argue that disposable cameras have their niche on night outs, to bars, to concerts and festivals and other events where you plan on getting intoxicated and don’t want to risk damaging or losing an irreplaceable vintage film camera
Great timing with this video!! Been shooting film for a little while and I had a friend come up and ask where to start. Perfect video to send their way! Great work as always
Olympus OM10 is excellent beginners slr camera because it works semi auto and chooses the shutter speed depending on your aperture and the available lighting. Still have mine today and still works. The Zuiko lenses are top notch.
Few days back I found my dad's old camera which he used when he used travel. He told me about that camera but he could recall the name, and i was kinda shocked when i found it out. Its a Zenit ET, with a self timer and still perfectly working. Hopefully I'll buy some good films and start shooting some of my project with that soon.
Just a Little tip from someone who ones an AE-1. If you are looking to buy this type of camera from someone private, look the battery up witch that specific camera needs and buy is before the camera so that you can test it. Otherwise you might make the same mistake I did and buy the cam only to find out that the electrtronics are broken.
the canon ae-1 is my first camera & I can highly recommend it! i got mine for about 100€ with minor flaws but working lightmeter etc. i love the formfactor & weight distrubution when a lens is attached. since I‘m comming from a filmmaking background i also really love the lens selection on the FD mount. another camera i can recommend is the fujica st801. the internal lightmeter does not show specific settings on what to choose to expose correctly but instead shows if it‘s to darf or bright - a great way to learn exposing in my oppinion! it‘s just a timy bit heavier then the ae-1, but if i wouldn‘t hold them side by side i wouldn‘t notice it. great video as always teo, much love🫶
Canon Rebel G is an SLR that you can basically use as a point and shoot. It has all the automatic modes, but you can also shoot manual and change lenses. It also has an EF mount, so you can use newer lenses. Got mine in great condition of facebook marketplace for 50€ and I’m really happy with it.
the electronic slrs from the late 80s and 90s may also be a very good choice for beginners, especially when you have used a digital slr beforehand. there are a lot of options from canon, nikon and minolta, most of the newer canon film slrs even use the ef lens mount. they are usually very overlooked and therefore pretty affordable, i can recommend the nikon f601 or the nikon f801 (i believe it is called the nikon 8008 in the us) and the canon eos elan 7, they are great cameras. another thing i would like to mention is that you should not go completely overboard and buy a ridiculously expensive camera as your first camera (like a leica m6 or contax t2 for example) since every "pro" photographer has one, it will not make your photos look better. sure, it may motivate you in taking more pictures, but first of all you should decide if you even like the process of shooting film, or else your fancy leica will just act as a 5000€ paperweight on your desk. invest in different film stocks and experiment with different scanning methods (home scanning, negative lab pro for lightroom) and try to find YOUR style :)
I hope one of them is available in Iraqi markets. Anyway, you make us love cameras. The way you film is so soothing and very calm. I just discovered your channel, it's amazing.
I’ve (re)started analog photography last year with my dad‘s Nikkormat and from all cameras I’ve since bought it’s by far the best I own. The experience I’ve made on the private second hand market ist the following: buying in bulk is worth it. I’ve had my eye on 2-3 SLRs and found them in different bulks for really cheap. I’ve since resold most of the unneeded equipment on eBay and have made great profit with that. The financial risk is minimal.
Hi Teo! I've just found your channel and gone on a bit of a binge! I usually shoot digitally on my Lumix s5, but it was getting too heavy to bring on travels. You've inspired me to start shooting on film, so that I can still capture my memories in a fun way. I have just grabbed myself a Pentax k1000 on Ebay along with some Kodak Gold and I can't wait to start shooting!
Zenits are just amazing. Ever since I found your channel I started using again my Zenit 12xp I got passed from my dad. I was surprised even the light meter works, it's an absolute tank that I've taken everywhere, they don't have many shutter speeds but are super reliable and robust, mine being from the era where they didn't use a single piece of plastic, I even got a telephoto lens for it.
Agreed. Zenit cameras are awesome! My first film camera was a Zenit-E that I got on a market for $20. In the past few months I've added 2 more Zenits to my collection! There's just something lovely about that rugged mechanical soviet design.
Hey Teo, I really love your videos, the smooth transitions, the effects, the music..everything and the videos are so calming. I would love to see the process of how you shoot, think about the video and edit them if you can in a future video. Anyway great videos Teo.
Nice to see the pentax K1000 specifically recommended. I also have a canon P which is fun for a rangefinder experience. Also nice color grading on the video. :)
I have the Fujica ST801. Wonderful camera that I got for about £50, it needed light seals replacing but it's been my favourite photography tool. M42 lenses are really cheap too so you have a nice choice of Helios, Zeiss, Contax, Pentacon and Fujinon lenses to choose from that also go for cheap. It has a max shutter speed of 2000/1 as well! My point and shoot is a Fuji DL270 and now have a Pentax Espio 90MC as well which I'll test soon. Also a Canon CanonetQL19 rangefinder that I should really use more. Next step for me is to find a nice medium format
Teo I just had the privilege of getting a 1930s Voigtlander Bessa folding camera for 6x9 negatives. And a Zeiss Ikonta with a Tessar lens. Tested them yesterday. Excellent quality and relatively cheap.
From my own personal experience, I highly recommend the Olympus OM20. It’s a mostly-mechanical SLR, but it does require a battery to drive the shutter - the act of winding the film on is still mechanical. The light meter in mine still works just fine, hence I keep it in Aperture Priority for the most part. Apparently the shutter can be driven with a motor to give a whopping five frames per second!!
Olympus superzoom 140s is probably the best of the super zooms. A great ruggid and simple point and shoot option is Olympus AF-1. With 35mm f2.8 which lens made of glass, the only downs side it has that you cannot turn off the flash.
I bought a Pentax K1000 because of your video! I'm in love with it. Found out the light meter is broken...Anyway, I met up with a seller from FB marketplace who sold me a 28mm lens. He wanted to troubleshoot my meter but no luck. But then he said he'd sell me his "backup" K1000 with working light meter...$20. I was so happy. Love your videos. I'm curious if you ever shoot video on film and if so...what you might recommend.
the first time when i thought about film photography i bought a kiev-19 from local ebay analog for only $8 (cheaper than a hp5+ roll), and a helios-81h lense for about $20, which can also be used on my nikon dlsr (because this camera has nikon mounth, but this is another story). And i didnt think if its good or not, i just started to shoot. Its sooo satisfying to wind the shutter and shoot a photo, understanding that you just exposed that little piece of film inside this metal box. feeling this mechanisms under my fingers is better than any fidget toys unfortunatly, my granddad (prof photographer in past) sold his gear collection long before i even tried digital photography (i remember me as a child playing with halsseblad film back, not knowing what it is). i wish i could got his cameras now
I've been very fortunate, in that I haven't had to buy any film cameras to get started. I just told my dad that I was interested in film and he gave me two of his Olympus OM-1Ns and said "here, try these". I might try and get one or two of his point-and-shoots to use as well
I think some later gen SLR's are pretty decent for beginners. You get better metering and autofocus, while keeping the option for manual control. Additionally they are dirt cheap because they are pretty undesired. I shot an EOS 500n(body is 20$) with a nifty fifty ef lens and was pretty impressed with my results.
if you're into the Pentax K1000s and can't find any, the Pentax Spotmatics are a good substitute! Very similar and has a self timer lever on the front!
Got a mint condition Fujica St801 for 40€ and found a pentacon 30mm for 10€ at a yard sale. I’ve bought a good many film cameras since but the Fujica has been my absolute mainstay through all of them. The others sit pretty on my shelf, ahahahah.
Ahh finally someone who does not say the starter camera is the Canon AE1 as the best starter camera. (or contax g2) I think any film camera that has a glass lens would be a nice start. Nice vid..
User of the AE-1 & AE-1 Program. Both excellent cameras when I first started shooting film and even now I still go back to them. Also recently picked up the Olympus XA-1 in Japan, only shot a few rolls so far but it's an excellent camera, according to the Oji-san that was selling me the camera said, optically it's sharper than the second and third iterations. And lastly, as for brand new cameras on the market, I do believe Pentax should be releasing their new film cameras this year or next year. So they'll be interesting to see once we get a look at price and specs.
Thanks for the confirmation on the Canon Johnny! :D And uuhh yes, I've heard the Pentax rumors and I would looove for them to come out with a new SLR, but I'm afraid it'll be very expensive if I had to guess :,(
I bring my finished roll of film to a lab. You can do it yourself, but I’m not that far yet. However at the lab you get the choice to get the film developed or developed and scanned. I always only take development, because the scanning I do myself. The scanning is the process of digitising your negatives to view them on a computer or phone🤝🏼
I currently have 2 SLRS and i think they are incredibly fun to shoot with, one i bought off facebook marketplace and unfortunately the shutter speeds were incredibly inconsistent. The second one my newer one i bought off of Ebay and the only reason i did was because of the incredible ratings they had. It works amazingly and im kinda now interested in getting a point and shoot!
I bought the minolta riva zoom 70w after watching your videos and cannot recommend it enough, its quick and easy to shoot, produces amazing photos and the camera itself looks nice Edit: ITS ALSO VERY CHEAP!!
i honestly got into this by randomly seeing a canon autoboy sii (or sureshot z135) on ebay and buying it without thinking! I didnt know it was film camera but here i am now and i think ill be pretty happy with it, let me know if youve ever heard or used it Teo!
i learned in uni with a canon ae 1..50mm fd...super camera. was brand new, my ancle bought it in the 80s,,,used it a couple of times and just stored it for 20 years 😂,,,
Hi Teo! This came RIGHT at the time I'm looking for a new SLR! Thank you so so much! You mentioned in the video that there is a street in Vienna that are all film cameras. Could you share the name in here? Gonna check it out when I'm visiting in March. Thank you :)
Hmmm I’m thinking about, what I would suggest, if somebody ask me. It’s a very personal depending question. I had just rudimentary knowledge, about photography with film. Thanks my grandpa, I’ve learned in a young age, how to operate a fully manuell camera without integrated light meter. So I startet also with a fully manuell camera, you even need to guess the range/focus. So it’s all about the person, who ask.
Got my first Film SLR, a Nikon FE2, from my dad. It was his camera during med school. And like a lot of people that inherited their cameras, I immediately damaged it haha.
Save yourself troubles and get something like Canon Eos 30 or Nikon equivalent. Autofocus, massive lens selection. Especially if you coming from digital cameras.
Hi Teo, thanks for making this very nice and informative video about film cameras. I am looking to buy a point and shoot camera (Olympus mju II Zoom 170) I was just wondering if you know any good and trusted shop here in Germany? I just moved here so I am not very familiar and my deutsch is very limited. Thanks in advance! :)
I ended up buying a Pentax K1000 which I adore, albeit its from the era it was manufactured in mainland China and the build quality apparently went down compared to the ones manufactured in Japan. I also ended up getting a Fuji STX-2 (with 2 lenses for £60!) for my collection and I hope to compare both of them and choose one as my main and one as a backup. With STX-2 compared to K1000 is that on X-Fujinon X-bayonet mount and adapter to M42 just... Works? Unlike the Pentax PK mount where you need to make sure you get one with a flange to actually manually adjust the aperture (iirc) Hoping to also purchase one point-and-shoot... But unsure what to look for in one?
Praktica L2 is a simple and practical box for film exposure. It doesn't have light meter, it doesn't have timer, but it does feature 1/1000sec shutter speed and M42 mount - it's a perfect tool for practice. But I don't recommend it, don't buy it, buy something else like Nikon F65 or Canon EOS 3000.
I have 2 k1000 and spotmatic and the other I was going to re sell bc I need money for film but I never go out and shoot😭 so I’m now just practicing after 6 months so will sell both of them now
Hey, I loved the explanation. Can you tell me if the video you recorded in this clip was shot with the Sony A7II? Additionally, is the color grading or preset you applied(used in this video) included in your Patreon? I am considering subscribing, and I'd like to know more about the content available on your Patreon. One more thing, can you suggest a camera and lens for me? I'll be joining university in Germany and traveling as well so i need a camera which i can take anywhere. I am completely new to photography and videography, and I need a camera that can handle both, preferably under 500 euros (used). I would really appreciate your help
i own a Mamiya 7 as my main mediumformat. Pentax k1000 as my slr and dont own a point a shoot yet :c i do want a contax t2 or t3 but they are quite expensive.
Hello there! I'm looking for help lmao. Basicly i'm shooting ballet at night so i need high ISO, high apperture and ofc high speed (1/300 minimum) wich is a problem at night... I know ISO are on the film i choose, apperture is on the lens but i have no ideas hos the speed works on film camera. And, ofc most lenses are f4, if i'm lucky f3.5 wich is not enouth for what i want. I still have the option of using a flash but it's not really the look i want to have. So, my question is quite simple, how to get this result without a f1.4 lens? (Cuz too hard to focus, dancers are mouving so f1.4 manual isn't an option, f2 eather). Thanks, hope you have an idea haha.
I recommend EBay in Germany. They’re I bought canon AE-1 with flash, 70-210mm, 28mm, case only for 80€. The same Minolta x-700 with second objection, tripod, 75-200 😂 it cost me like 85€. So look for that there
Thank you!! I’ve made a decision to buy a similar one since it’s not available on any of my local sites. I’m always keen to take photos the same kind you do since that’s what I love capturing so I think the new lens will be perfectly suited for me :)
Hello hello, here's everything I'd say to a friend who asks me which film camera they should buy. I hope this can help you out! :)

I hear Sony can do film simulation can you make a video of that comparing Sony film simulation to actual film ?
i feel like many of us just get our camera’s from our grandparents attics
Exactly - got my first camera from my dad and then wanted to try fully manual so bought a spotmatic. Go digging up relative's unused cameras to dip your toes in the hobby
my grandmother just gave me one old Olympus stylus and here I am
I would disagree

Dude, ur voice. Amazing. I can listen to this voice talking about something like naval lint and would still be mesmerized.
U need to do documentaries

This feels like a great comprehensive review, thanks

Hi Teo, I can highly recommend the all-manual/mechanical Olympus OM1 SLR! Great ergonomics with the shutter speed ring at the front.

Also a Canon CanonetQL19 rangefinder that I should really use more.
Next step for me is to find a nice medium format
great video, incredible vibes and perfect info for beginner photographers
There are coming at least 3 different *new film cameras* in 2024. Pentax, Film Never Die and Mint/Rollei 35 are said to be published all until summer.
Hey! I'm from India. Love this one Bhai seriously...I like your content and the cinematography bro...that's awesome 😊😊
Teo I just had the privilege of getting a 1930s Voigtlander Bessa folding camera for 6x9 negatives. And a Zeiss Ikonta with a Tessar lens. Tested them yesterday. Excellent quality and relatively cheap.

Bro's voice on in another level 🔥
I got a zenit 12xp with it's helios lens for only 10 bucks and honestly it's a beast and a half
personaly i would recomend both Pentax and Olympus... all amazing cameras! 😊

You just earned a subscriber, really like your videos

Just found a Pentax K1000 at a nursing home garage sale for 5 bucks! Can’t wait to develop and see how they look
Very beautiful video, very well done. The quality, is superb -Thank you so much! good job

And uuhh yes, I've heard the Pentax rumors and I would looove for them to come out with a new SLR, but I'm afraid it'll be very expensive if I had to guess :,(
How do you develop these photos? Is it possible developing yourself digitally?
I bring my finished roll of film to a lab. You can do it yourself, but I’m not that far yet. However at the lab you get the choice to get the film developed or developed and scanned. I always only take development, because the scanning I do myself. The scanning is the process of digitising your negatives to view them on a computer or phone🤝🏼
Fantastic video, as always! Thank you for sharing
It works amazingly and im kinda now interested in getting a point and shoot!
hey great video! what are some of the names of the sound tracks you use on epidemic sound? i love the way you incorporate them into your videos!
I love your voice 😅
Very soothing
Your videos are too high quality to watch. 😂❤️
I bought the minolta riva zoom 70w after watching your videos and cannot recommend it enough, its quick and easy to shoot, produces amazing photos and the camera itself looks nice
Edit: ITS ALSO VERY CHEAP!!
My Nikon FE has been great getting back into film!
i honestly got into this by randomly seeing a canon autoboy sii (or sureshot z135) on ebay and buying it without thinking! I didnt know it was film camera but here i am now and i think ill be pretty happy with it, let me know if youve ever heard or used it Teo!
Great Video, Thank You!
Can you talk about 35mm f2.8 or even fast lenses for film cameras?
i learned in uni with a canon ae 1..50mm fd...super camera. was brand new, my ancle bought it in the 80s,,,used it a couple of times and just stored it for 20 years 😂,,,
Minolta cameras are so underrated imo, I love my x300
I have a Pentax spotmatic,it's so cheap and reliable that I like it😂😂
Hi Ted great video,
quick question, Is Kodak KB or the Minolta sightseer good in the point to shoot camera segment?
Hi Teo! This came RIGHT at the time I'm looking for a new SLR! Thank you so so much! You mentioned in the video that there is a street in Vienna that are all film cameras. Could you share the name in here? Gonna check it out when I'm visiting in March. Thank you :)
Does anyone know any other photographers that make videos in a style similar to Teo? I love the calm, cinematic type of video Teo makes
What was the first song in the beginning? The folky sounding one.
My choose is Canon eos300v because it's friendly to my EF lenses from DSLR 1dx
I shot with film cameras for 60+ years a Bolsley and a Rolaflex. I sold them. Now I find myself wanting to get another film camera.
My first camera is a Praktica MTL3, my first roll comes back tomorrow
I have an old Minolta srt201 that I’m gonna replace the light seals on and start with that, it has a 50mm lens I might look for a 35mm
I got my Minolta x500 from my Grandfather and i'm shooting my first film now...really exciting..i hope it doesn't has light leaks 🙈
Hello Teo! I recently uncovered a Maruman MS320 film cam, I was wondering if you have any knowledge or any insight of it!
I would like to buy a camera to really start photography bc I love to takes photo on my phone but it's not the same feeling
Save yourself troubles and get something like Canon Eos 30 or Nikon equivalent. Autofocus, massive lens selection. Especially if you coming from digital cameras.
I found a film camera in the attic one day 🤗
Hi Teo, thanks for making this very nice and informative video about film cameras. I am looking to buy a point and shoot camera (Olympus mju II Zoom 170) I was just wondering if you know any good and trusted shop here in Germany? I just moved here so I am not very familiar and my deutsch is very limited. Thanks in advance! :)
thank you so much!!
Works? Unlike the Pentax PK mount where you need to make sure you get one with a flange to actually manually adjust the aperture (iirc)
Hoping to also purchase one point-and-shoot... But unsure what to look for in one?
This video is gold!!
Hi there. Is it possible, to shoot sport photos with k 1000 or with its alternatives?
The XA’s are great film cameras. They would be considered more of a rangefinder which is another category of film cameras
does anyone know what's the title of the song starting from the timer 3:07
That‘s “Lucky Ones” by Roof and Paper Twins :)
great video
Hey Teo, I got a camera with a 50mm lens. i wanted to know if you know how to clean the lens. the lens i got is quite foggy.
what font at 0:23?
indie flower?
No mention of Olympus OM???
I have 2 k1000 and spotmatic and the other I was going to re sell bc I need money for film but I never go out and shoot😭 so I’m now just practicing after 6 months so will sell both of them now
I have a Olympus trip af 51, is good? for start?
I love my Canon A-1
thanks
So look for that there
One question. What lens do you use on your Pentax K1000?
A Cosina 35mm f/2.8🙌🏼
Thank you!! I’ve made a decision to buy a similar one since it’s not available on any of my local sites. I’m always keen to take photos the same kind you do since that’s what I love capturing so I think the new lens will be perfectly suited for me :)
My Camera is an Olympus superzoom 115.
5:02 DON'T FACE THE CAMERA UP WHILE CHANGING LENSES, YOU'LL GET DUST ON THE SENS.... oh yeah huh 😅
