  • Videos show police pulling over a man whom they believe was allegedly impersonating a law enforcement officer on July 20. The Acworth Police Department in Georgia said 33-year-old Jerardson Mackey was allegedly spotted flashing emergency lights in a retired police cruiser and was dressed in replica law enforcement garb with a badge. Mackey claimed he was an "off-duty HERO" with GDOT. Authorities say Mackey was cited for unlawful operation of an emergency vehicle and arrested two days later on a felony charge of impersonating a public officer.

Eh, stuff like this is becoming increasingly common with today's gig economy where many companies no longer "hire" people, but instead enter into an agreement where the worker takes on more of the liability and risk. This one looks like a bring-your-own-equipment security job, where he depends on a "supervisor" at the company to route work to his one-man one-car business that only serves said security company, but they don't technically employ him. He certainly shouldn't have been using the equipment to control traffic, and an uninformed observer could easily be lead to believe that he was an officer of the law, but these types of non-employment employment are increasingly common across many industries because the company with the recognizable name can skim most of the profits while (a) being free from the expense of complying with most labor laws and (b) passing the bulk of the liability of doing business down to expendable workers.

Don't police have some sort of record confirming that they're real police officers? There's gotta be some sort of list not accessible to the public of each law enforcement officer and who they're working for and what they're working as. I would be very surprised if that isn't the case because they could easily detect impersonators that way.
