I was an instructor there back in 2015. We all have our own techniques. I do not like running my root as cold as he runs it, but it is entirely up to your preference. Reason behind that is as you run slower and colder you sometimes will have too much build up and and risk not breaking down the walls completely, some tests require a certain number of passes. Keep that in mind. All in all good job by this instructor.
Thanks man I appreciate that! Had to run it a bit cold for the .045 wire and the ceramic backing was donated for the video, so it turned out to be a bit wide, hence, colder root pass
I went to TWS. They are the best and help me out so much. I cannot thank them enough. I love welding, it’s in my heart. Kase and I were in the same class. I still remember many of my classmates. Miss you guys
How ya been brother?
@target5347 What wire and size is this? Got a ceramic test tomorrow on .52 Flux I’m used to 1/16” so I don’t even know the starting settings.
@@target5347 ^
@@jessebeall4523 i was using .045 in this video. So your probably gonna want to run around 30-34 volts and around 300-350 wire speed
Thanks man! Appreciate the explanation and time putting this together. Appreciate heaps.
Kase is my current instructor at TWS Jacksonville he is a good instructor.
I try to be! Thanks!
That was very good that ceramic tape was my invention back in mid 1970s here in San Diego ca. Nassco shipbuilders
Just started at the welding school myself last week actually. You still work there?
@@21donutave83 no I'd retired in 2013 after 40 years
@@georgeposada6537 that’s great how’s the retirement going? I’ve always wanted to have a job like that where you can have almost all sorts of benefits and retirement plans.
@@21donutave83 so far retirement it's okay I also retired from the National Guards here in National city ca I really don't do much just kick back Homar.when you have an idea write it down in a peace off paper so won't forget it and the more you see it the better you'll understand it when you're ready take it to your supervisor and see if you make extra money Good Luck
Same here I started like 3 weeks ago lol
Nice..good heat for the root pass
Good job
great job good teacher
Im a shipyard welder before and man i really miss it. You need to stay at the top of the puddle and burn the ceramics to achieve a good result.
yeahhh, I miss the shipyard too. But at least as an instructor, i show up to work clean and I leave clean lol
Nice !
I worked dude cool dude at BAE in VA side by side in the field we was the shit out there
Who this? Lol
@target5347 Hey Kase, it’s Mike V, I’m out in Pascagoula testing out for Ingalls. Why did we not use the ceramic tape at school this past year?
I’m getting my butt handed to me, ITS ALL CERAMIC BACKING!
I’ve got a good instructor here though, getting me up to speed!
Take care Bud!
Ingalls. Start my orientation in two weeks 😩heard it’s all ceramic for testing. Don’t look too bad. Just the X-ray 😖
Hey Mike, how are things? And we dont teach ceramic backing simply because it is very expensive. A whole box (which at school would probably last a day) is around $600+
@@target5347 shipbuilding is a whole other world!!!
I passed all 4 tests and got certified, now I need to work on getting limber. I’m in some tight ass spaces!!!
Making that OT $$$!!!
I've worked at Ingalls in Pascagoula for a few years and it's something else lol....good luck man and soak in all the information you get ...my instructor was a guy named Mr. Brodus.....his motto was " Weld hot... triple X hot " lol
*Kase getting that money* 💰
I’m going to PTTI I’m about to do my flux ceramic test Monday
How did your test go?
@@target5347 i pass the bend test when well
@@0NEH1T_ dude! Awesome stuff man! Congrats! I hope my video helped you out!

That helped my instructor trying to get me to weave side to side but I’m better if I just rub it up
What wire are you running, because I got take a test for 101T wire never done it
It usually runs the same. Just a bit more of a watery puddle. I was welding 71-T Ultracore .045
Very nice 😍😍
How much the voltage setting for 3g and wire speed
should according with the base metal thickness. normally , if the Thk. is 1inch, the current be used approximately 220~240
I keep messing these up on tests. Either the ends have porosity or it just blows through.
Make sure you keep the same nozzle distance at the beginning and end. A lot of people roll their wrists either at the start of end of the weld
You do look familiar I wonder if I worked with you in Virginia
probably? where did you work?
@@target5347 Leibheer, BAE etc. and I went to ATI
@@BELIKEJUATER I worked at BAE in2018. I was at the far end doing new construction for the new USS JFK
@@target5347 Ok that’s probably where I seen you. I was there at the same time. On every boat
And the new construction
I have used ceramic tape before it comes in handy
Super
Can you tell what's the volts and wire speed
for capping and filling and first pass
next week I'm gonna do my first test fluxcore backing ceramik
with 12 mm plate
I hope you passed and are successful. Blessings
What's the wire #
Lincoln Electric 71-T Ultracore. .045 diameter
Bam!!!
What's your gap?
1/4"
Let's hope those rings haven't cauterized his fingers yet 🤞
Not yet thankfully. But when you know how to not mess yourself up, it helps a bit
Should I assume he went a little hotter on his hot passes? He never said if he dialed it up after the root pass.
I did. Bumped it up a little to 22.5 volts and 225 wire speed
@@target5347 Thank you. I watched this video before taking my first weld test last week, and I was offered my first welding job. Still hoping to find something closer to home, but glad to have one offer on the table. Thanks for posting. It's very helpful to many people.
@@VuDuGrrrrl8075 I was a student at the very same school I work for. I know welding has changed my life, and its always been my passion to pass my knowledge down to others. Seeing this comment let's me know I'm doing something right. Good luck with everything this career has to offer, and to always make the best of it! Best wishes
