Then 320 n wipe eveven the filler w acetone , just wipe it quick nice job!! Happy Turkey Day! GOBBLE GOBBLE!!
I've been wondering (for a long time now) how your flocked dash is holding up. There are lots of videos now about how to repair and flock a dash, but very few do a long-term follow up. I know you did the repair and flock a long time ago, so would really like your input. Thanks.
I flocked the center console of my 1998 Alfa Romeo GTV. The center console on there cars was notoriously garbage and would crack or disintegrate regularly. I custom molded a piece to fit and flocked it. It was great over the last 4 years (sold the car this summer), only issue was a coffee stain I got on it, which was very tedious to clean up because of the material.
I flocked all of the interior metal panels in the back of my VW T4 camper. Given that it was such an extensive area to cover I didn’t bother using the glue supplied with the kit. Instead I used a brand of metal paint who’s name I shouldn’t advertise but I know that you know it’s Hammerite. I applied it with an imperialist 2” brush. Because the consistency of the paint is a bit thicker than the glue it laid down nice and flat without noticeable brush strokes. This gave me a working window of around 3 hours to apply the flock. As the paint dried it locked in the flock in as well as any glue. Just a handy alternative if you’re worried about application time constraints.
Couple suggestions, 1, face and eye protection. 2, keep a shop vac close so you can suck that "build up material" out of the way as you sand. I found that if i gave a good 3 minutes of sanding 30 seconds of vacum helped me not over sand and stay pretty even. Its easy to not realize how far down youve sanded if you dont get the sandy material out of the way the entire time. great vid i appreciate the help.
Mother of All Flockers. You Flockers have given me some really good ideas for my 78 Honda. I wont be flocking it, that shit looks like a giant dust magnet and i am keeping the car, But it will be of some type cover that can be taken care of awesomely.
I have used this in some small woodworking projects like lining the drawer in a small jewelry box. The method I used to glue down the flocking is paint that is very close to the color of the flocking. This allows the paint to hide any spots you may have missed with the flocking. Nice job!!!!
Nice look, next time put painters plastic to catch the rayon for later repairs or touch-ups. I'm doing this to a dash cap so I won't have to remove the dash. Good work
You video popped up and im not sure why, but I enjoyed watching it. I am currently restoring an 87 Buick Grand National, maybe one day Ill have to flock my dash. haha Never even heard of that before this video. Thanks for he share!
vin tags are made with an extremly soft metal and have special rivits....it can be done but it is really easy to damage or ruin them. might be easier just to mask off that area
Instead of the flocking material, I wonder what would happen if you used laser copier toner. You'd need to do it outdoors somewhere because it would make a mess but should result in a super flat black surface. Could also mix colored toners from a color laser printer.
Thank you so much! Please upload the rest of the E30 videos. I just got my hands on one and I'm about to do a ton of work on it, I need your wisdom. Prost!
I would have done it in sections so that I wouldn’t have to hurry before the glue dries. That way you could apply the material with confidantes and ease. Good job though boys!👍🏻
they recommend you first fill the crack with the flexible plastic fiber rods using a plastic welder then using the padded dash filler. it is different then other body fillers as it is a flexible filler. The flocking came out looking good though great job!
I remember some other video where someone flocked their dash and mentioned that you can just clean it with wet wipes and that you don't really leave any marks, but don't rely on me lol
once it is cured, you can touch it how much you want without any marks. For cleaning use wet fabric (not paper towel, it leaves its pieces on the surface) and just clean it. ;)
nice job... But a tip for next time... Try using a smooth tile for mixing body filler on... Cleans off allot easier, mixes better and is more stable to work with... My buddies laugh at the tile in my tool box.... But it works lekker
Пластиковые трещины сплавлять нужно тем же пластиком (пруток) с двух сторон с помощью горячего воздуха ~350° с поперечной заклепкой пластиковым прутком и будет вам счастье
Bondo? Doesn't whatever you fill the cracks with need to be able to expand and contract? If I thought this would last more than a year or two without cracking again, I would absolutely consider doing this on my e28.
To make the job a little quicker/easier I've used dash covers/caps to cover nasty 3 & 5 series Bemmers in the past. Inexpensive and look the part. BTW nice looking finish guys
Electro static flocking produces a far better result. You can use a scented / flavoured additive in the clue to lesson the smell of clue. Prep work takes longer due to attacking aluminium foil the the rear of the panel to earth it to the high voltage generator
How's the maintenance of this dash? I repainted my IS300 dashboard after repairing it's sticky problem and it's hard to maintain - lots of dust settling and staying on the dash even after wiping multiple times
At least keep it real. U forgot to do those 2 cracks. Cause it came good actually. But 2 lol spots. No biggie great job. I'm bout to wrap my interior dash.door panels. Center counsel. Back panels in Alcantara black fabric like the ZL-1'S. and after I cut the pieces to fit I'm going to have SS. embroidered on the dash piece and INKMAN1108. on the door panels. I'll send pics. Great job. Huge believer in DIY jobs. I don't let no one touch my cars no matter the job. Certified mechanic (30+ yrs) certified autobody.
You could of burned the dash to the metal frame of the dash. I’ve only seen a burnt dash once at a e30 meet. And I don’t think there is anything on the internet about burning a dash.
I did something similar but I used normal body filler and it has cracked after about 6 months in the sun. I might try it with the padded dash filler and see if that stops it from cracking
I could be wrong, but I was told by highway patrol removing the vin plate on your dash Is a felony. Idk how this would be enforced, or how they would find out, but I would use caution, and maybe look up local law first.
Salt City Euros yeah I assumed so. I bought a vehicle and the dash had been swapped from another car, and they swapped VINs so it would be the correct VIN in the vehicle. And when I took it to get inspected I almost got in trouble. I know the situation isn’t the same, but I thought it better to let people know just in case
They can tell by looking at the rivets holding the plate to the dash. Don't do what they did, altered VIN will at the very least mean your car gets impounded and never returned, and at worst you get to spend some time in jail. Masking tape and a sharp blade. It's mental that they actually removed the VIN plate when all they had to do was mask the damn thing.

Guys, you did a killer job.
"Flocking the Dash" sounds like a euphemism for something I can't quite put my finger on.
when she won't swallow, you flock the dash!
That dash is all flocked up!
You don't wet sand body filler. Getting it wet causes it to swell and bubble. Body filler absorbs water very well.
I’m glade you have re-uploaded your videos

Legend has it, the respirators got lost in the mail.

I'll be doing this to my 1979 Dodge van. This does look amazing, i love the result. Thank you for this video.
Is it easy to clean? Seems like it would want to stay dirty.

Looks Mint, only one problem... I'm way to lazy to take my dashboard out.👍😎👍
it takes about 2h
not easy to make it out..😂😂😂🙂
@@stargas3328 and no idea how to install it back..
Cut the corner off of a ziplock bag filled with bondo and pipe it in like cake icing. This helps with the excessive material build up. good job.
one of the best Cinematic vids for e30s ive seen well done boys

Nice flockin' job!
Do you have a video where the dash is featured inside the car? Looking forward to seeing that...
I want to see that too
Looks dope AF fellas

How scratch resistant is the finish? Are the trays still useable?
I had a cracked E30 dash. Found a nice one in the JY and pulled it. Took me 6 hours to R&R. A day in the sun and the "new" dash cracked. 😪
How long it took for new cracks to come up again?
acetone on vinyl causes extreme shrinkage and even more cracking.. likely many of the cracks you thought you missed were actually cracks you created..
How many bags did you use?
To make the job a little quicker/easier I've used dash covers/caps to cover nasty 3 & 5 series Bemmers in the past. Inexpensive and look the part. BTW nice looking finish guys
do all the Bondo work and then instead use bed liner spray

How about a follow up video on how it held up after a few weeks/months?

whats the differences between Nylon and Rayon flock ??
