Do you know someone who thinks the high elbow is actually 'high'? Share this video with them. Unless they're your competitor. In that case, keep it quiet... 😁
The whole video is really well explained, with just enough video illustrations of what to do and what not to do. I feel like I have a really clear mental model of what I'm aiming for in the pool.
I have this "HIGH" elbow issue for my left arm. It took me a long time to recognize this problem (video taping in a public pool is not permitted in Canada). And it took me even longer time to understand why it occurred to my left side only. I think it's because my left side of the core and pelvis is weak. So I have this habit to raise the elbow really high to fool my brain that I actually rotate well. Just wanted to share this experience for people who are seeking root causes.
Thanks, much clearer now. Actually I get my elbow in the right position but have to focus on the "early" part to get the extra water (power) from the reaching hand by starting just a few inches under the water (about 10-15 cm) to make the whole catch more efficient - wondering if that's correct
Hi Brenton, I think timing the catch with the downward kick is quite crucial during a stroke cycle. Is there a drill for that? I dont time it well during my training so dont get the propulsion as I expect. Thank you.
At around the 1 minute mark the knee bend of the swimmer seems very acute. I thought we should strive to have minimum knee bend? Or should I have about the same knee bend as the swimmer shown in the video?
Hello. I'm following your YT channel...and its great. I have one question about my swimming. I have a pretty much straight arm under the water...can get that power diamant or high elbow catch ⊙>. Have you any idea on what should I pay attention (is my hand entry to shallow or to deep) Any drill suggestions. Thx and keep the good work. Br Seb.
I've been at this DIYS swimming correction for about a year. My confusion is with the catch. Some say never cross the arm under the body. Others say (as with this video) pull the catch from elbow down which places the hand under the torso. Which is best?
My friend (who is an experienced swimmer) says that the high elbow catch isn't taught more. He believes you just 'windmill' through the water and the propulsion comes from the wrist flick beside the hips, just before the arm is raised out of the water for another stroke. Does he have a point or is the high elbow catch still the most efficient method? Thanks

I have a question why on sun yang's swimming technique the high elbow is really high, almost align with the shoulder ? (ruclips.net/video/uncOBURz-6o/видео.html). I tried to do that and its really hard because it caused my shoulder to have inner rotation. and it hurts
The problem with the uk is most public pools dont allow snorkles some i know dont allow fins. Im lucky i can use fins but no snorkles the uk is such a nanny state, we isnt allowed to dive in public pools now.. they build them too shallow at the deep end and only on race days can you dive in.
You don't swim while watching yourself on video. High elbow is much closer to the proper feeling than forward elbow. When you swim, you have no concept of the line from your shoulder to hand, and no feeling of your elbow being in front of that line.
If someone thinks high elbow means an elbow staying near the water surface, they've received some very bad instruction. That would need the upper arm to be sticking out horizontally which is bizarre, and even more so with even the slightest normal rotation. This looks like a fabricated problem as an excuse to make a video.

me
when i look at sun yang's 1500m olympic vid, his elbows look extremely high... is it just the angle? Or is he different?
Effortless Swimming that was me until your clinic. Was a light bulb moment. I have a lot more power same effort going deeper.
I know quite a coaches who are very confused with this topic.
I really love the repeated back and forth replays on those short sections. really very informative technique!
Thank you very much. I think your channel is the best swimming channel on RUclips!
"Act like you're getting out of the pool, a powerful position" your quote really help me

This is what I will be working on , with rotation for the next few weeks.. Many Thanks Sir . Brilliant vids . Apricated mate ..
thanks for clearing this! It was very confusing!
Thank you Brenton for all your efforts to share your knowledge..

This video helped my swimming so much over the course of the past week.
So helpful! I was really exaggerating the high elbow!

Great content with lots of insights this week - I've learned a lot and can't wait to try it in the pool
Love the use of the metric system 💓, and also the video 👍
This is so useful, thank you, I was focusing too much on getting the elbow towards the surface and it felt really strange!
Your videos are awesome! Thank you!

By far the best video about high elbow catch 👍👍👍👍👍

Thanks for the very useful comments about non elite high elbow
Good video for avoiding stiff neck? It maybe my elbow too high, kinking that side of my neck? Thanks love your videos.
yes can be!
Muchas gracias

Great video with a lot of information

Wt about elbow position in butterfly swim ?

Avoid crossing the Centre with your hand as it goes under the body

So much for "experience", whatever that means.
windmill is for 50m sprinters. If you want to swim 200m+ (or even 100m), you want a high elbow catch
@@YSFmemories cool thanks. I actually end up with a relaxed/lazy looking reach when swimming long distance to save energy

Just found out your video. It costs 99 instead of 55 now.
Perfection is the enemy of perfectly adequate. I am my worst enemy, too much pressure, too much expectation, too much frustration 😖😡
Thank u i got it

A better name would be forward elbow. Finally explained properly!!!! bloody high elbow .....
This "high" elbow catch is very confusing. You should actually be talking of a front elbow catch.

@@Randsurfer I found out that other coaches talk of an "early vertical forearm", which is definitely more meaningful to me.
Important clarification!
