I actually finished the game today....a magnificent experience. Just like back in 1998. Putting a building plan on a tree will not waste the tree..I usually command my braves to chop down the tree manually then click on the plan and they will place it next to the plan and eventually use it to consturct the building.
The issue with placing a plan on a tree is that the tree will not regrow as long as the building exists. It is true that braves will automatically cut down any trees on a plan, and the wood from the tree will be used, but after that it will not come back. This can be a problem in the late-early part of a level after major buildings have been constructed as those take a lot of wood. It isn't much of an issue in this level because there are plenty of trees, but in later levels it can become a problem. I haven't talked much about the specifics of tree management, but I intend to discuss it in detail in later levels.

it's not ideal, but yes the tree grows back after some minutes (on a close possible location, so, near the building)
