Ah, the now hard-to-acquire Mezzanine adapter board for Airport cards. I used to work for an Apple Authorized Repair Center a couple years after these model iMacs were discontinued. Many of them were brought in for repair of hard drives, P.A.V. board failures or logic board replacements. I do remember some were brought in to have the Airport card installed, because theirs didn't have one included. The owner could buy both parts, but the Mezzanine board could only be gotten through a special part order by an AAR Technician. You couldn't just buy these cards out-right from a retailer at the time.
I think Apple's breakdown of lifespan for their products goes: 1-5 years is "Supported" (although, said product may get discontinued in that interval), 5-7 years is "Vintage but Supported" and 7-10 years is "Obsolete, No Longer Supported". So basically, you technically could still have your device serviced and parts available within the first 7 years since introduction or purchase date. After that, it's out of warranty for repairs and service.
