@@jen_nice2059 That's a real thing, too. I've had many employers over the years tell me in interviews that they would not hire me because I'm not pretty enough. My qualifications were meaningless to them. On the other end, I had one employer hire me because I wasn't pretty enough, and he felt his wife wouldn't feel threatened having "someone like me" in the office all day with him. Again, my skills were meaningless, but he was shocked after he hired me that I reorganized the whole office and streamlined my position so I could get all my work done in 4 hours each day, when my predecessor was termed because she was overwhelmed by the workload. My innovations were so effective they modeled my reorg to all their other offices across the country and I was given a promotion. I stayed there for 2 years until my boss quit to work elsewhere (better position for him) and my new boss was verbally abusive towards me, so I quit. How one looks shouldn't make a difference, only whether or not a person can do the job, but it dramatically affects hiring practices and how employees are treated. And honestly, I'm not that unattractive. I've never even been called ugly IRL by another person. I'm simply a female who is "unattractive" and that is enough to justify massive amounts of discrimination towards me in the workplace, which has only gotten worse in the past 10 years since my thyroid died and I became overweight (I was not more than 10 pounds overweight at any point in my life prior to my thyroid dying, and I held the job mentioned above years before my thyroid died). Aside from work, I've had people tell me I don't deserve to fall in love and be in relationships because I'm not pretty enough for anyone to like me in that way, and that's a genuinely horrifying thing for anyone to be told, and I've heard it my whole life. Every person deserves to be loved, and lots of truly ugly men are married, but there is no forgiveness for women in this area of life. It's honestly sickening the attitudes people have toward appearance.
@@xzonia1 It's insane that someone dared to say that you don't deserve to be in love because you're not pretty in their eyes. They're sick and irrational, because a rational person would understand that beauty is in the eyes of the beholder and some people like what many others don't, and some are not as superficial as others. Also, males who are sexist, racist or abusive are the ones who don't deserve love since those males lack the intellect and manhood to be respectful of others, whereas a female who merely doesn't look stereotypically pretty can totally believe that someone could love her.
Many jobs are still physical. Mine included being a welder. An employer is obviously going to be biased towards an individual who's in shape and can physically do the work when it's 100 degrees outside. Even if your job isn't physical you're still going to be costing the company more for health insurance.

@Ben L why do ppl persist in comparing fatness to smoking? Lmao. Ppl don’t need to smoke to live but ppl do need to eat and yes constant dieting can make ppl go insane so it’s valid in the study of fat bias.
@Ben L If "weight stigma" created more health problems, areas with less stigma would have fewer health problems. Which means that the healthiest people in the United States would be in the South, where obesity is most common and accepted as the norm. But this is not the case.
Wow. Seriously? I'm obese and I am the top performing employee in our company. Performance has nothing to do with weight. 🙄 Watch the video, it states, up to 60 plus percent of top male CEO's in the US are overweight. They wouldn't be CEOs if they have not performed well.

At my last job, all the chairs with armrests were made so the armrest could be moved up or down to accommodate the person sitting in it. At my current job, the armrests are fixed so that they cannot be moved up and out of the way for overweight individuals, which is a problem for me because I had surgery and cannot have an armrest pressing into my side. It's also a problem for pregnant women, who can't fit into such chairs.
It’s amazing how this video pretends being fat is just like being a minority or disabled. It isn’t. Being fat is completely treatable and should be looked down upon because it costs our society billions in DIRECT medical costs
Whilst I find fat acceptance ridiculous, I don't think 'looking down upon being fat' is the best idea, mainly because I think there is evidence that it doesn't actually help most people lose weight. Over-eating is often associated with people feeling depressed or having low self-worth ('comfort eating'). Shaming people makes that worse. A more effective way of tackling obesity is to focus on society-level changes to average diets. The reason Japanese people and Europeans are generally thinner than Americans has nothing to do with individuals have more willpower, more national diets (and to a lesser extent) activity levels).
Merry Machiavelli you are overlooking the fact that those are places with plenty of unhealthy food. France makes food with tons of fat and butter but people do not overeat in places like these because being fat is shamed. It is taboo to be fat in a place like Japan so they make sure to not overeat and watch their diets. All of the places you mentioned have tremendous access to fatty and sweet foods. In the US, we are starting to shame the act of shaming. The reason shaming was around in the first place was to prevent people from engaging in bad behavior such as glutinous eating. For you to say that the US is magically the first place where shaming doesn’t work is ridiculous. Yes, individual studies concur that shaming an individual will make them feel bad and eat more, but those studies were conducted in the US where it is not taboo to be fat.
@@agentcodybanks1 I highly doubt 'shaming' is the primary reason French and Japanese people don't overeat. If that is what I were saying, I would agree it is ridiculous. Of course, standards of 'normal' size may be different in Europe/Japan versus the US, but then you have a causation issue. Do standards of normalcy 'make' people fat, or do fat people change the standards of normalcy. What comes first? Regardless, I don't find the 'taboo'-ness of obesity to be particularly compelling explanatory factor for obesity at a societal level. What about diet? Americans portion sizes are larger. Fast food and processed foods are cheaper relative to fruits and vegetables (which both the EU and Japan heavily subsidise). Americans eat more meat. All these things are likely to lead to obesity. You also have factors like exercise, the US is much more heavily car-based than Europe and Japan, which tends to lead to lower activity levels. You'd expect that to impact obesity too.
Coffee Lover I feel like left handed is a valid bias. You’re born with a preferred dexterity. Most products are catered towards right-handed people and left-handers experience higher mortality due heavy machinery and other products having a preferred dexterity. Not that we should legislate anything to cater to lefties. Let the markets dictate.

Terry talked openly about his exam, and mentioned that the doctor said he's healthy now, but he won't be in the future if he doesn't lose weight. He showed us how his steering wheel wore holes in his shirt. We both moved to different areas, so I don't know if he ever lost the weight.

What she says beginning at 9:22 is so important. This form of discrimination is not about whether it is right or wrong. This is about accepting people as they are. If an overweight person does not get a job due to a prejudice, then it impacts ALL of us. You also cannot encourage someone to be a smaller size through exclusion and degradation as successfully as you could including them.
I used to be fat so I disagree with this video, it definitely took a long time but in the end it was worth it. Also I've noticed people who are obese tend to be more depressed and right/left wing, which is kind of scary. You can also say the same for people who are severely underweight. Healthy body, healthy mind.
When the lady said that there were no shirts of her size being larger, smaller and petite individuals also have the same issue. I’m of smaller size and there have been many times where the shirt given fits me more like a dress than a shirt. This clothing size issue applies to both sides of the spectrum.
It's such a ridiculous entitlement to just assume there should always be something for you wherever you go. Especially over something such as a XL shirt. How is it discrimination because you need a special ordered size due to being a "person of size"?
@@johnjamele Most definitely. There's a woman whose entire TikTok account is devoted to videos about her size. She complains about everything being discrimination, calls everything and everyone fatphobic, and prances around in bikinis. After trying to find more reasons why he would be hire for that job and I wouldn’t it just seems to come down to he was very skinny and I have a belly.
I’m thankful that the state of Michigan (where I’m from) has passed legislation making discrimination against overweight people illegal. I’m actually surprised other states haven’t, especially California. Also, just because some individuals are uncomfortable with the words obese and overweight doesn’t mean the rest of us have to conform to that. Those are the scientific terms, tired of sugar coating to make people feel better. It’s denial.
The food here is not good. They are allowed to put whatever they want in a package and label it food. We don't have good standards like Europe, but we don't have food scarcity like many countries, which leaves us in the middle - full of foods that are bad for us and use chemicals to make us want more.

We shouldn't be promoting ignorance and stupidity with such comments. Some people can't control their weight due to health or psychological problems. Try to do some research before showing off your ignorance.
@@thepittstop17 Most overweight people with medical conditions have weight problems BECAUSE of their weight. One preceded the other. A tiny percentage of overweight people have medical conditions that explicitly caused their obesity. And as for people with psychological issues: again, we shouldn't be promoting an unhealthy lifestyle (not to mention the burden on our healthcare system). You can show empathy to these people, but we shouldn't be deluding ourselves that these are healthy lifestyles or that these people should be content with their weight. And using words like 'people of size' is just more ridiculousness that the right will consume the left over.
@@thepittstop17 Serious issues such as thyroid gland problems are FAR less common than simply overeating and under-exercising. Most people with office jobs spend pretty much their entire day sitting while still consuming too many calories, causing their weight to balloon.
I think you lot are missing the point. Trying to fight discrimination doesn't mean you are promoting an unhealthy lifestyle. Whether they are overweight out of their on volition or because they have some disease, it is not right to discriminate them. It's not right to discriminate anyone because of their physical appearance or whatnot. And fighting against such discrimination doesn't mean you are promoting being fat.
There's nothing that can be done , yes we should keep trying to stop discrimination towards existing overweight people who can't help it but at the same time we need the awareness that unhealthy lifestyles are not welcome and are less effective at work. One cannot expect to be obese by choice and expect to be treated the same way as everyone else. I get that fighting discrimination is not the same as promoting an unhealthy lifestyle , but it's a very thin line and one that society isn't capable of observing
You should be allowed to discriminate based on weight someone when picking someone to represent a company to a client. I view that as pretty reasonable
"Overweight" and "obese" are medical terms. People who are seriously obese need help, not placation and justification. So now nobody can have chairs with arm rests because it might embarrass the one obese person in the office? At times likes this CNBC shows how liberal American has parted ways with reality and entered the land of complete psychosis. Hey, IT'S NOT OK to be obese. It's unhealthy, preventable and is a growing problem in the United States and needs to be tackled, not masked with idiotic euphemisms.
This is why standardized tests are so important. The ACT/SAT/LSAT/GMAT/MCAT/GRE doesn’t discriminate based on your weight, race, gender, sexuality, or socio-economic status. You either know the material or you don’t.
Because too many Americans are clinically obese. Obesity is a life-threatening disease. We are also biologically wired to find obesity and gluttony repulsive. This lawyer is trying to bend our reality in order to match her paycheck goals. Screw that!
"Hight weight individual" is so wrong: a man 2 meters tall and 100kg of mass is way less fat than an other 1,50 meters tall with the sane mass. Fatness is like density: not about weight but weight related to stature. And "people of weight" is ridicolous lol.
It’s simple, you can’t choose your sexual preferences or race but if you’re overweight it’s totally on you. Being fat is caused by bad eating habits and lack of physical activity, but to be fair it’s not only fat peoples’ fault, food companies are loading tons of highly addictive sugar into everything and one needs a lot of self control to resist the temptation. Body positive movements are also guilty of convincing everyone that being fat is ok, spoiler alert, it’s not. Obesity is a real problem that is going lead to some serious health problems in the future.
While I agree that being obese is not good for your health, it should not be a factor if you are performing your job duties as required, I've met plenty of people at work who are fit and yet I worked circles around them, anyone can be lazy, not just fat people.
@Tikolico your not wrong that just because some ones in shape doesn't mean they will be a good employee but that is also true of collage degrees and experience. But if some one has a college degree, and lots of experience gets a job over some one who doesn't, no one would bat an eye. If you lack the discipline to get and or stay in shape it doesn't mean you'll be a bad worker but it definitely doesn't help.
One of the worst things an organization can have is a fat person, because they always slow everything down and don't have the stress tolerance to handle the high cognitive and physical loads.
People are not responsible for their race or sexual orientation, but most people are, at least partially, responsible for their diet, workout routines etc. and thus for their weight.
I was on a flight once, had the window seat and the middle seat was vacant as the aisle seat was taken. I was so excited to have that extra space! They closed the door of the plane, and I once again thought to myself "YES!" ..But then I heard "ma'am their are no seats back there, you'll have to come up front". I was so nervous to look back as there was one open seat ahead, and then the middle seat next to me(that I was aware of) then I heard "Oh, my fat ass ain't gonna fit there" ..the guy in my row and I both looked at one another and then I looked up and there she was.. a 'woman of(GREAT) size'..shuffling her way towards us.. instant dread came over me. She chose the seat between us, and that was the last I saw of that guy. I had the arm rest down, she put it up.. I put it back down.. I was now contorted, legs facing forward, together, upper body TWISTED(more of my back to the window) I was speechless, but she was extremely nice.. made it hard to be frustrated and angry/annoyed. She asked for a seatbelt extender (NEVER saw or heard of one prior). Once buckled in, she looks at me and says "You know I'm in your seat, right??" .. I look at her, look down at myself, look back at her and ask "Are you gonna pay for half my flight ticket theb??" She laughed and turned away. I officially hated her, so much animosity... I felt punished. Anyways, I now always chose the aisle seat🤙✔
I feel your pain. I had to endure a sixteen-hour full flight sitting in the middle seat next to a person whose over-sized body overflowed onto me pushing me onto the window seat passenger who complained constantly to the flight attendant that I was taking his space. I didn't get any sleep and was totally exhausted when switching to the next second leg of my trip for another 7 hours of flying.
It's not "High weight" or "people of size"... THESE PEOPLE ARE FAT or OVERWEIGHT. 99% eat junk and move very little and have little personal control when it comes to food. Overweight people must DROP the victimhood thing. I'm definitely against them being shamed/harrassed, but in workplaces for example, their functionality (job dependant) will be limited compared to a person of fair weight. Why should business always carry the brunt of people's poor lifestyle choices?
Saying people of size is moronic. It is not descriptive in anyway. It makes one sound like an idiot saying it. Someone weighing 100 lb is also a person of size because they have a size.🤦🏼♂️
Beauty privilege is a real thing. Good news is that anyone can control their weight. Everyone has different genes and disadvantages but the key point is they're controllable if you work hard. I'm 5'11 and used to be 120lbs and am an Asian man. Highly undesirable to most women but I bulked up to 160lbs and upped my fashion game. People perceive me differently now. If you know that being overweight is not desirable, why not do something about it instead of trying to change the society's perspective?
I'm a personal trainer and I was discriminated because I am 200 pounds overweight 😭😭😭😭 They say I'm "Unfit" for the job. This is a real problem stop joking
There’s this assumption that all overweight people are lazy-and I won’t lie, most of the overweight people I know _are_ extremely lazy. However, one of the smartest and most diligent people I know is also overweight. I do think this stigma affects them in the workplace. This combined with the _proven_ health detriments that come with high weight would motivate me to get to the gym and diet-I’m not sure why high-weight people don’t think the same. This is not meant to shame these people; I’m genuinely curious as to why this happens. If you “don’t have time,” _make_ time. Wake up earlier, try intermittent fasting, work harder to get a raise at work so you don’t have to work as many hours. Contrary to popular belief, healthy food is much cheaper than whatever junk food you can buy. If your only option is fat food, I would suggest skipping the meal altogether or at least limit what you’re intaking. There are so many free dieting apps to help you keep track of your meals. The only valid excuse I can think of is if the issue is directly related to a disease not caused by your weight, and even then, I know many thinner people who do not allow their condition to control their size.
I don't understand what the term "medical judgment" means. Is that when people assume a high-weight person is unhealthy or less physically capable because of the weight? And if so, is it good or bad for an employer to expect a high-weight employee to do physical work as quickly as an average-weight employee?
The problem I have with all this is these people need help. Excess weight is a health hazard. It is something that should be corrected. Our government is bowing to corporate interests in allowing them to promote an unhealthy lifestyle. Obesity would only be discriminatory if there was nothing we could do about it. I am sure the pharmaceutical industry is thrilled to have more overweight diabetic people with high blood pressure and clogged arteries to serve.
Many people are taking this video the wrong way. CNBC is not saying that being obese or overweight is not an issue they are saying the issue is when applying to a job or getting a raise your weight is a factor that is hindering you when it shouldnt. Yes if you can't perform as well because of your weight your company will tell you something and tell you to lose weight, but for the most part it seemed as if the jobs they talked about werent labourous jobs or jobs that weight shouldn't be a factor in. And come on guys let's be civil and not harrass people on their weight they could very well be trying to do all they can to lose it and be doing good! Weight doesn't come off in a day it takes time and dedication. And we shouldn't call people names for being overweight we should encourage everyone to become healthy in a positive manner :)

It's honestly sickening the attitudes people have toward appearance.
op0
@@xzonia1 It's insane that someone dared to say that you don't deserve to be in love because you're not pretty in their eyes. They're sick and irrational, because a rational person would understand that beauty is in the eyes of the beholder and some people like what many others don't, and some are not as superficial as others. Also, males who are sexist, racist or abusive are the ones who don't deserve love since those males lack the intellect and manhood to be respectful of others, whereas a female who merely doesn't look stereotypically pretty can totally believe that someone could love her.

if anything this new support for fat acceptance reveals just how bad our obesity problem is
Totally agree. How we going to encourage them to lose weight? It like accepting a stinky person who don't bath.

I’m thankful that the state of Michigan (where I’m from) has passed legislation making discrimination against overweight people illegal. The problem with obesity is the food we eat in America, I came to the US weighting 120 pounds and within a few years I went up to 230 pounds
The food here is not good. They are allowed to put whatever they want in a package and label it food. We don't have good standards like Europe, but we don't have food scarcity like many countries, which leaves us in the middle - full of foods that are bad for us and use chemicals to make us want more.

I used to be obese,it was my own fault, now that I am healthy I see the error of my own ways and it's tragic to see people stuck in them.
It is your fault for your health. It is not your fault for being fat. You fatness should be marker for discrimination.
While I agree that being obese is not good for your health, it should not be a factor if you are performing your job duties as required, I've met plenty of people at work who are fit and yet I worked circles around them, anyone can be lazy, not just fat people.

But if some one has a college degree, and lots of experience gets a job over some one who doesn't, no one would bat an eye. If you lack the discipline to get and or stay in shape it doesn't mean you'll be a bad worker but it definitely doesn't help.
My BMI was around 23 and some people at work teased me for being "skinny". Yeah weight discrimination exists.
"People of size".... You have got to be kidding me 🤦🏾♂️
That man living under a bridge isn't a drug addict, he's a person of substance.
The man living under the bridge isn't an alcoholic he's a person of consumption.
We're becoming a country of softies... Quite figuratively and literally... *Pokes person of size's gut*
It's the WALL-E effect
One of the worst things an organization can have is a fat person, because they always slow everything down and don't have the stress tolerance to handle the high cognitive and physical loads.
This video is so pointless why, just why.
The should have to buy a second seat because of the extra space they take up.
@@FryzleFry absolutely! I agree, I shouldn't be punished for their presence and choice.
Fat people aren't marginalized. Anyone who think this is beyond mental.
There is no stereotype about sloth, gluttony and burdening our healthcare system with your own choices
Even funeral services, larger grave plots larger coffins harder to transport harder to cremate.
"high weight"? More like morbidly obese. Paaalease!
Saying people of size is moronic. It is not descriptive in anyway. It makes one sound like an idiot saying it. Someone weighing 100 lb is also a person of size because they have a size.🤦🏼♂️
I’m sorry but when she said butterball I died 😂😂
You are a petty person. I also laughed *hangs head in shame*
😭😂😂😂
Well, I'll admit I'd laugh (although try to keep it hidden) if I saw someone get up and the armchair came up too!
Wtf is a “high weight” person ? There’s nothing wrong with using words like obese or overweight
Weight is something you can control. This whole video sounds like a bunch of excuses to me.
Wouldn’t the simplest solution be to simply lose body fat. Instead of changing the whole world.
That’s racist.
I don't understand what the term "medical judgment" means. Is that when people assume a high-weight person is unhealthy or less physically capable because of the weight? And if so, is it good or bad for an employer to expect a high-weight employee to do physical work as quickly as an average-weight employee?
People, especially those in advantageous situations will always discriminate against those different from them
Makes sense. Why would an employer entrust you with anything when you can't even take care of yourself?
"We live in a society" 1:28
I heard that too

What's the deal with it? I'm not a native English speaker, I didn't notice anything strange with her sentence. Could someone explain it?
@@dianas7429 it's a meme apparently
@@technobrend0 thanks!
They pulled the "We live in a society" cart.
It sounds like one of those problems manufactured in the USA? I could never imagine this "issue" being even remotely important and relevant enough to be discussed here in Europe...
Because Americans eat like they have free healthcare
