- Join award winning photographer and urban explorer Jason Lanier for a never before seen look at the abandoned Star Mine with the Hecla Mining Company. PLEASE THUMBS UP, LEAVE A COMMENT, SHARE AND SUBSCRIBE!
Jason was given unprecedented access to this mine that was shut down decades ago and left untouched. Jason explores the mine discovering everything from lamps, masks, suits and more.
Unlike many of the places Jason explores, this place has been left in the same state as when it closed. It's free from graffiti and vandalism and shows only the effects that Mother Nature has taken on the facility.
Using the Sony A7s and Sony video cameras Jason captures these places and shares them with you. You also get to see the moment when Jason captured an image that ended up receiving an Honor of Excellence at the WPPI 2015 Print Competition in the Landscape Division.
We thank you for watching and invite you to check out all the amazing abandoned places Jason has explored over the years by clicking on his Abandoned Places Playlist.
Thanks for watching, we truly appreciate you all...:)
I worked that Hecla Star Mine all summer in1967 as a miner's helper. Worked the stopes at the 7000 level. That's 7000 feet DOWN. The lift (don't call it an elevator) dropped us by shear gravity until the brakes came on and the wire ropes cause the "cage" to bounce up and down for about one minute before it stabilized at our level. Then took a "car" down the level to our working stope for hard rock drilling, packing powder, wiring the charges, blowing the charges and then "mucking" the stope next morning until it started it all over again... at 100 degrees temp and 90% humidity. Everyone was known as "Pard". What an experience for a 17-year old kid from Palo Alto.
I worked at that mine from 73 till it closed in 82. I operated the main line diesel hauling ore, men and material in and out of the mine for the last 7 years I worked there. Those tracks you see at 7 minutes into your video go threw 2 air doors then all the way to the main station, about 1 1/2 miles in. Back in the day, I had a Yashica 35MM camera. I took it to work on a few occasions and got some awesome photos of the station, hoist room and main ore shoot. I can't believe how run down it is. I know that mine like the back of my hand.
I'm working on an underground map of the area. do you know if that main station connected to the Lucky Friday in Mullan? I know the older main shaft in burke did at one point.
very nice...very good!!!
Amazing stuff. My love for abandoned buildings will never die. Cant wait for part two
Still waiting?
Thanks for sharring Jason!!! So cool...
Hell with the haters! Thank you for sharing!! Not only do I learn a ton of stuff and get exposed to a different and brilliant perspective, I enjoy the hell out of every aspect of your posts. This was amazingly enjoyable!!
Great Video Jason!.... Jason Lanier who is by far one of the Best Photographers of the 21st Century exploring a disused Mine, posting some stunning Moody images taken with a Sony A7s....Excellent = Respect from the UK
Another exccellent urbex movie. Thanks for sharing. Waiting for part 2. :-)
oh this is fabulous!!!!! as an intrepid explorer, i have only seen this place from the outside...full of curiosity. Thanks so much. I encourage you to read about the long history of Burke and the Hecla MIning Co.
Most excellent!!
Love it Jason thank you for sharing.
Love this :) witty and informative with stunning shots to cap it off, part 2 is eagerly awaited......
Can't wait to see part 2. Amazing shots!
what a thumbs up video Jason... :)
Thanks for sharing Jason
You are amazing I love the things you do. I seen the beach wedding shots it was awesome..
To put it in perspective, the fedora stopped being cool around the time this mine closed. And this guy still wearing one to this day in 2023. It’s really truly incredible
Thanks for posting these videos. Very inspiring, and I love your love of what you do so well.
My grandpa along with all his friends worked in that mine. I also worked with a couple ole miners that had worked in that mine back in the day.
Another great vid Jason. Lots of awesome lighting and shots. You definitely see the vision. Keep it up. Looking forward to Part 2
Have entered many such places to take photographs. However, it was usually to investigate a fatality - not for art--- Now I feel I should re-visit some of those places!
I really like these locations you are finding. Love your work! All of the "haters" are just unhappy with themselves.
I just recently explored here and I loved it.
I just took my son and his friends to do some exploring and ghost hunting and came up with some amazing evidence!
I lived a mile down the road from there for 17 years and always wondered what the inside looked like. Cool video. 👍
Who owns/oversees it?
@@ROOKIE_IX It's still owned by Hecla, they still operate other mines in the area.
Funny how you mentioned the composer analogy. Since i started on my journey with photography - i know longer say, "wow thats an awesome scenery". Rather now i say, "wow thats a great shot". I dont always see a shot, but i look for them more and more as time goes by. Seeing videos like these helps train my eye in a way. You dont take things for granted. The key is to stop and look more often i find for me. Helps me slow down from a rushed life of the 9-5 to enjoy making something cool.
As always awesome video. Im still looking for abandoned mansion but here on the coast of MS they are non-existent. We would have to travel further up North to the MS Delta.
Cant wait til part two.
At 10:20 in the video that was the lamp room, where we got our assigned mine lamp. We did not wear masks. It's a hard rock mine. Not a coal mine.
Great movie! I love your camera.
Love when you do urban exploring videos
Thank you very much for posting this Jason love your work
Jason by far this my favorite abandoned shoot. The images are amazing.
yet another amazing vid, your an inspiration to all togs, models and urban explorers out there
My family worked in the mines up in Wallace back in the day, I have family that live in Burke canyon and I've always wanted to go inside there and see the inside. I will say this has fed a small bit of my curiosity. I wish the guys giving you the "tour"/letting you in had given you more about history up there. It's amazing I love it up there I now live an hour away but the history and beauty up there is amazing!
I think they tried to give some info on the mine and buildings but these guys weren't interested. They just wanted to get good lighting and backgrounds for still photography. Makes a cool video but I'm more interested in the subject, not the person
At 18:47 you show the change room and then you go into the shower room. Yup; You get pretty dirty working underground (surprise, surprise), so we took showers before changing into our street close and going home. Nice of Hecla to provide that. One more note: everyone that worked underground was issued a brass tag with a number on it. When you returned your light to you charging station, there was a hook just above it where you hung your tag. This was to make sure everyone was accounted for.
Good to see you on here friend. I'll subscribe ❄️
Great vid, very cool location.
Good to know i'm not the only person who gets to a spot and thinks "oh yeah, this is gonna be good" before even shooting a single frame
loved it !
Dope...
thx of what you say about photographs , i finally found someone who understand how i see ! nice shots!
love the comment about the raw/fx ;)
Amazing stuff Jason, you have truly inspired me.
Nice!
Just saw your video and as always just amazing. Your analogies with the piano players and composers were on point. I guess it boils down to those who can do,and those who can not only know how to talk crap. Eagerly waiting to see what you got planned for the shoot.
So much for seeing the mine. May wanna change that title heading sir
Can't wait to see part two you made a couple stunning pictures mostly I have a picture in my mind but the problem is can not produce it out of my camera I wil someday love you're vids
Amazingly cool. I would love to follow you around for a day...
That was awesome. Truly inspiring. And the way you 'see' the image in your head, before shooting it, that's a talent I aspire to aquire. The camera setup is amazing too, the low light capabilities and the 'tiltly' screen sure does help in situations.
Cannot wait for the 2nd part. I now need to find some 'safe' abandoned locations in the UK. Given me ideas to do a possible fashion style shoot. Thanks Mr Lanier.
Loved your video Jason I also do some urban exploring here in NYC. Whether i have consent that's another story lol. Keep the content coming and I think this video made me want a A7s even more. Pretty sure the a7sII is gonna be out of my price range, maybe the a7iii will have some good low light capability,
North Idaho people are the best
What video camera are you using to record? It's really clear and smooth!
He used the Sony vg20 and vg30 and Sony action cam for the dash cam on the drive...my guess is the one Jason is holding is the vg20 and the main one filming him is the vg30
Santas Finest Thank you!
Jason, my grandfather worked many years in this mine after he returned home from fighting in Korea. My father was born in this town and also worked in the Star mine after returning home from fighting in Vietnam. For years I've wanted to go back (used to come here every winter when there was ofter 6+ feet of snow until I moved away in the early 90s) and would love to purchase some of your photographs from this place frozen in time. Is your website the best place to find prints or do you have an email I've missed where I can contact you?
I wish I could learn a lot of those tips and tricks. I can see what I want to shoot but after I shoot it the photo does not come out with that extra pop that your photos have.
Thanks for the video Jason. Will always be a fan.
Jason, if I remember correctly, there is a collapsed house nearby on the road to Gem/Burke, and some kid scribbled messages on the walls in crayon that you can see from outside. Do you remember seeing anything like that?
Spoiler alert. Only one man was killed in the 9+ years I worked there.
People in my country need to abandon their places some more so we have more abandoned places to explore haha.
So many people want in here, and some even trespass to try and explore here. I think Hecla is missing out on a big opportunity to make money allowing tours to be held there!
That was truly awesome thanks very much Jason, Can you please share what lens you were using on the A7s please?? Cheers Emille, Sydney Australia
I used to work there 91
how do you like the Rokinon? it would be sweet to see a practical review on some of their lenses. all the reviews out there on them or bland and doesn't show how they actually perform in the real world.
Its my dream to take my camera into one of these places!
I am writing a book about abandoned places in Idaho. Would it be possible to get your permission to include some screenshots of this video in the book? I could use only screenshots without people and you would get credit for the photos.
Hey jason can you do a review about the sony a7r mark ii when you have one?
Jason, would you recommend the native E-Mount Rokinon 14mm, or would you recommend the A-mount version + adaptor instead?
Awesome video! Love the pictures and the place :) Only the sound in the driving timelapse intro is horrible. Also the footsteps in the first part are way to loud over all the other sound. Maybe put some shotgun mivcs on the cams and isolate the sound more :)
Hope you invested in some steel soled footwear! I learned form painful example photographing crime scenes like these!
Really good.. worst thing about this video is now you got me wanted to buy that vg30 video camera and the a7s. i have the sony nex 6 and a7ii, waiting on the sony a7rii.. now u got me debating on getting the a7rii and just go get the a7s to add to my a7ii. or should i get a7rii and wait for the a7sii or ... oh never mind you get the idea. Please help in my decisions since you screwing it up with the great videos.
I really want a Sony action cam
When i worked for hecla i knew a guy that worked there as a hoistman
Was some of this shot at 60 fps?
Lol I went there a few years ago, definitely is not free of graffiti whatsoever.
Anybody else notice the lat date of the log of the miners was 9-11-. 77?
Even 7 years ago, Affliction shirts and fedoras were fucking lame.
Who would you have to ask to get permission to enter the buildings
I was hoping that this was a tour about the building and town, not a personality snapshot with cringe vanity monologue.
I’m here for the mine bud not for a pretentious guy talk about photography
