Ah yes, the classic dilemma of explaining what's so good about Undead Unluck without spoiling what's so good about Undead Unluck all of us fans have been there.
I’m an anime only cuz I spoiled the manga surprise for myself. In my opinion, a good show should always be good throughout to be “good”. That being said, some of my favorite shows start off very slow. So I understand the frustration. (Reborn! Is my favorite anime of all time and that starts off SUPER SLOW!).
@@MUSQUIZanimation depending on what surprise you have spoiled there might be some more waiting in store so I would say stick to the anime until it ends without spoiling yourself further. I think the thing that makes it difficult to explain is the overall twist about how the world in Undead works, as a manga reader the reveals are always a high point of the series and you want people to experience it the same way. In terms of the quality though I am of the opinion that it has always been good since the beginning, the positive reactions to the first two episodes can testify to that. It's just the writing, pacing, design, and setting of the manga are so different with contemporary shonen series people find it difficult to just let go and enjoy the story without having everything making sense from the get-go.

Gotta give props to Evan Call for the music for Frieren, which has been excellent. Of course, he's the same guy who did the music for Violet Evergarden as well.
As someone who's caught up to the manga on 100 Girlfriends, it's what I would describe as peak harem fantasy: all the ships win, there's barely any drama, everyone gets along. Our boy Aijou is playing with God Mode on, and it's hilarious.
It's not my cup of tea but I can definitely see that it does a lot of things very well. Why are all the girls falling for the bland MC? It's LITERALLY magic. That's almost as remarkably simple as it is remarkably effective at removing tensions and opening the door for all sorts of fun hijinks. But I'm most impressed that the author has somehow continued to come up with unique girls to fill out the eventually 100.
As someone who came into Frieren almost entirely blind, mainly knowing how well-regarded the manga was and that the director had been responsible for Bocchi the Rock last year, I was… devastated, I think is the right word, in a positive sense. The way that it uses such a simple, straightforward and sincere take on the high fantasy genre to say some incredibly resonant and profound things about mortality and how time makes one reflect upon the past and transforms even trivial events into things deeply consequential took me completely off-guard and shattered my heart into pieces. In the episode where Frieren and Fern search for flowers, there is this little moment where Frieren remembers Himmel first telling her about blue moon weed in passing, and without any word to the effect being said, there is this realisation that she finally understands not only how he felt about her, but how she felt about him, decades after he had already passed away, and I was speechless. The only thing keeping me from sobbing was the fact that I was watching it with friends and felt the tiniest bit too self-conscious about completely breaking down.
Id never heard of frieren before RUclips showed me the trailer for the primier. I then read the synopsis, and from there it was basically "Ok, lets see if this hits it out of the park. So far, frieren has stepped upto the plate, swung the bat, and connected. The bat is currently vaporizing as the ball is being accelerated at a noninsignificant fraction of C
I will admit i was nearly ful sobbing when she got to the top of the tower and saw the flowers. What incredible animation and what brilliantly effecting music
I only found out about it when I saw the ONE HOUR AND A HALF premier of the show on a licensed anime channel here on YT. To put out a movie-length introductory episode for an anime series is extremely confident of the studio (which is Madhouse btw) and that just made me interested. And boy do they freaking deliver. A Fantasy genre anime with an unexpected twist in that the show began during the Epilogue of the standard Fantasy storyline? With no Isekai in sight at all? With actual emotional heavyweight plot beats that WORKED? Also the promise of the show's antagonists actually being Evil instead of just pushovers? WITH 26 PLANNED EPISODES??? I don't watch anime much these days (the last time I was so excited about anime was Chainsaw Man and Violet Evergarden) but Frieren really made me excited to wait for the episodes to drop.
Seeing how The Apothecary Diaries didn't make the list for scheduling reasons, I'm pretty sure it'll be an anime that will receive its own dedicated video when you watch it. It IS that good.
It's the best anime, not only of 2023, but of the last few years. It's so absurdly good it feels unfair to compare it to other shows and movies, it should go into a category of its own.
@@daizy7441 don't worry. SDS will prove the theory that shooting high powered laser beams at the sun to remove mass to keep it in check is actually possible JUST so there can be more seasons.
Undead Unluck is a miracle that it survived the Shonen Jump axe back in 2020, when even the new manga by the Beelzebub and Toriko author got axed. I remember reading it for the first time and thinking it was probably going to get axed in 20 or 30 chapters, but it didn't. The story and characters just kept getting better and better. Undead Unluck is one of the biggest manga surprises of the last decade, and I'm so grateful that it's still going strong.
I was blown away by how ridiculous the situation got and that last scene just sold me on how insane this story can get, can't remember the last time I actually cheered watching anime, love ❣the over the top characters and situations they get into, and yeah, the world building is so fun, what a premise 🤩
I am at volume 11 and... Kinda disappointed. I mean, they become Mangakas, toys, fight three internal warfare crisis, and until now the best part is... No one. I am finding it incredibly... Average.
Migi & Dali is INSANE in the best way possible and I hope more people get into it. The potato chip scene tone is a perfect way to describe it - like the stakes are incredibly high and absolutely bizarre and I can’t tell whether I’m supposed to laugh or be disturbed and stressed (I am enjoying it a LOT)
Episode 2 suggests there's some real mystery at play, which means the show will probably be some cross between comedy and seriousness. I am thoroughly intrigued.
Biggest pleasant surprise this season for me was Tearmoon Empire. I expected it to just be another take on the "Girl becomes the Villainess and must avert her own death," genre of story, but it actually does some unique things that have grabbed my interest. Just a few things to potentially peek people's interest in this show: the MC has character flaws but is/was never a horrible person, just someone spoiled by her station in life and who grew up ignorant to the plight of the people, so she genuinely tries to learn from and correct her mistakes the story thus far has balanced dark and emotional moments, with some genuinely solid moments of comedy the people who caused the revolution are not depicted as totally evil or unjustified in how they treated the MC in her previous life the supporting characters have distinct and memorable personalities and are written in a way that lets them simultaneously be both capable and dumb when the story needs them to act in a certain way
heya, fellow tearmoon fan here! A few questions: where are you in the series, are you reading the lightnovel or manga, and who is your favorite character? You don't have to answer if you don't want to, tearmoon is just a hyperfixation of mine and i don't know anyone who's read it so my outlets are limited lol
@@madpie5147 ayooo nice to see some appreciation for tearmoon empire, as a novel reader i hope the anime adaptation goes past what the manga has currently since its not a lot
@@Gotei_captain i only have the first volume of the manga so far, so i don't know how far along it is. I'm partial to novels as well. I'm just hoping the anime maintains a consistent energy throughout, because from what i've seen stories in the villainess niche are more likely to fall apart the further into the season you get. Either because they neglect worldbuilding early on in order to reach the action more quickly, or reach a comfortable place in the story arc halfway through the season so it just meanders around for the remaining runtime.
Thanks for your input! One of the things I've been missing in reincarnated/returned villainess anime was having more serious tone (Heretical Last Boss sort of tried getting there, but to me didn't quite land). I was wondering whether the trauma of literal decapitation would shift the tone somewhat, but the trailer I've seen made it unclear. Hopefully, the dark and comedic moments are put together well, with neither spoiling the other. ^^'
I've been reading Apothecary Diaries, its pretty good. It has a nice mystery of the week pacing to it, while still maintaining a large over-arcing plot thats beginning to build up. Also very pretty characters/artwork, and the character interactions are great. Hope the adaptation does it good.
I was not aware 100 girlfriends had finally gotten an anime adaptation, but Im glad it did, it's almost refreshing to see an anime that doesn't double down, but instead hundreds down into the trope to the point you just laugh and keep watching
@@Yokubasu It really is, in the manga they do many fourth wall breaks and references to Japanese pop culture and it’s hilarious, there’s one time where they referenced “your name” with “meth’s name” it makes sense when you read it
As someone who has read all of the I'm in Love with the Villainess light novels, I'll just say keep your eye on it. The story and characters REALLY go places. At this point it's just a question of whether or not the lower tier studio behind the anime can pull off a good adaptation. If they can, this is almost certainly gonna end up one of those shows Geoff does a solo video on later saying it deserved a higher spot in the ones to watch.
They immediately hit one of those heavy moments in Episode 3... It came completely out of left field and completely shocked me. But it was really good.
I really hope they include the discussions of class and workers rights as well. Top tier story. If they do get to the arc with the trans woman, I really hope they treat her with respect.
I noticed something interesting about Frieren: You are sneakily being put into her shoes, in form of character moments. The show shows many swift moments where we get to know some characters more, but they are so fast that if you don't pay attention, you'll miss them. Much like Frieren, to whom a whole year may seem like a blink of an eye, those moments are easily missed.
They really primed me to pay close attention with the "sour grapes" spell. Catching why she was looking for it made me know I can't take anything for granted, which I love
I'm so glad Undead Unluck finally received an anime. It has been one of my favorite series from Jump for a while now, it's really heartwarming and completely bonker, I can't recommand it enough.
honestly thank god for frieren and dungeon meshi twohandedly saving the fantasy anime landscape. i do genuinely enjoy isekai, its one of my guilty pleasures, but seeing some good classic fantasy so well written is honestly like finding an oasis in the middle of the desert. im insanely hyped for the dungeon meshi anime and absolutely cannot wait for more people to get to experience the amazing worldbuilding, character writing and storytelling the manga has going for it. AND the munchies it never fails to give me whenever a new monster gets cooked into some delicious delicious food.
Isekai is just, SO convenient for worldbuilding I think is the big problem. It's a lot easier to give exposition to someone new to the world than someone from it who should already know these things. Frieren so far excels I think because it's worldbuilding doesn't need too much explanation so far, and what little it does is conveyed through it being historical and conveyed to Fern who's still young
@isaac_marcus i definitely agree! its an easy formula, and like i said i do enjoy isekai (both of the more well thought out and kind of garbage varieties). but man is it fun to see something different for once! hopefully more authors will follow in those tracks. you can also easily go the witch hat atelier route, which also has a main character be introduced to a different society as an outsider, just Without the isekai elements. in that case its just that witches are both omnipresent in this worlds society while also keeping their secrets very well hidden- it uses the same 'trick' as isekai tend to but keeps it to regular fantasy, with some amazing worldbuilding and a really fun magic system to boot.
The changes in perspective that frieren provides - such as 'standard combat magic' being the same as 'zoltraak' is really freakin' cool. It's a world that evolves over time, just like ours, and has different histories and stories to tell. Once we got to that part of the story I was hooked. How many other stories does the magic of the world tell?
The best manga I have read (yes, better than One Piece or whatever else you think is better). The only negative is that the best part of the manga is actually the character designs and backgrounds, some of that will be lost in conversion, but the mysteries and characters on its own will be anime of the season (if not year) material. Yes, better than Frieren and competing with Oshi no Ko.
Good thing is we will have 3 episodes on Saturday. Which is enough to get someone hooked. Plus I wouldn’t be surprised if he makes a video solely for it.

I suspect at least a couple of those fantasy series in the bargain bin will end up covered in greater detail during the Hottest Trash, since all of them are sporting the edgiest edges that have ever given a finger a paper cut. And yet, not one of them will ever out-edge the king of edgelords, Cid from _The Eminence In Shadow._
Undead Unluck is a maater class in set up and payoff when it comes to world building. Because rereading the manga after you catch up shows how much stuff has been set up that won't be paid of for dozens of chapters. Really shows how it's either well planned from the start, or they're really good at creating payoffs from random set ups.
The amount of implicit information crammed into the panels of the manga as like small illustration on the corner or just seemingly throwaway dialogue is crazy sometimes. The only other author I can think of that's doing a similar thing is Oda but I feel with him it's more often just fun details instead of stuff that actually fills the hole in the narrative.
@@deltskr9222 spoilers The stars man, the stars. That's the first time I realized how good the world building is. I immediately went back to earlier chapterz to check, and yep, it was set up earlier.
@@crimsoneclipse0618 True some other good setups I can remember on top of my heads are maybe -> . spoilers . Billy's true motive, negation and its mechanism is also foreshadowed very clearly if you really think about the fact that: 1. Somehow he can't use Tatiana's, Juiz's, and Fuuko's negations and these three are the only ones having doubts about him betraying the Union 2. When Billy fought Juiz and she activated Unjustice, the resulting actions was him blowing Juiz's arm off. Naturally then his true vision of justice is then the opposite of harming Juiz 3. The way he just keep saying unfair lol Other than that maybe foreshadowing about Backs, Victor asking about the day of week, and the constant looming panel of the moon are some of the stuff I can remember.
> "Undead Unluck is a maater class in set up and payoff when it comes to world building." I dunno, it would be pretty tough to beat The Promised Neverland when it comes to that.
@@ThePreciseClimber As someone who has read both series: Undead Unluck really *does* get that good. Don't get me wrong, The Promised Neverland is always good about its set ups and payoffs, but Undead Unluck just takes it to another level entirely. Of course, I can't tell you what exactly it does without major spoilers. However what I *can* say is that it can provide set ups that you only realize were set ups after the payoff happens. It's a series where every time there is some kind of twist, everything that happens before it follows the rules that were stated after it. There's a tremendous amount of re-read value, and even though some revelations are really obvious most of them manage to be surprising (In a good way).
IM SO EXCITED for The Apothecary Diaries!!! I picked up the manga just by chance because the artwork was gorgeous, and it’s basically a murder mystery set in ancient china with a badass directive who’s the villages healer. It’s so good!!!
Man, frieren is so good. As an anime weeb who never really gets into manga, I’m so glad I gave it a shot. Volume one addicted me like nothing ever has. It’s just perfect. If you’re like me and usually just wait for the anime, this might be a good manga to jump into.
As an Apothecary Diaries light novel reader, if the anime is even half as good an adaptation as the trailers promise, it will be my anime of the season, possibly even of the year. I hope the anime takes its time with the pacing- the slow pace is ESSENTIAL to the storytelling. It NEEDS the time to set up the world before the ball can truly get rolling, but once it does, it NEVER stops. Not even manga readers truly understand what’s in store for them in the arcs (and major scenes) to come. No, the frog cannot even begin to compare to the inhuman squeals I let out upon reaching the end of light novel volume 8.
I'm currently on volume 4 of the light novel because I could not wait for the episodes to come out, and the manga didn't quite grab me (it feels way more fast-paced than either the anime or light novel to me in a way that put me off a bit) and I am truly going insane. Foaming at the mouth as I eat through the chapters
19:05 "if the prospect of Mech-related paperwork excites you as much as it excites me-" Me: _immediately stops this video to go watch the first episode of Bullbuster_
Can't wait until we get into the deep stuff of Villainess, writing is fantastic, starts with a comedy-like plot but the world building and actual plot picks up pretty quickly, It has real life problems and very serious topics. Animation aside, I hope they can do the justice in the story passing.
Unlike To Your Eternity which caused me emotional fatigue because I cried so much in every episode, Frieren causes me a different type of emotion, something more subtle and melancholic but beautiful to see.
To Your Eternity felt too much the same after a while... It's not that every completed story felt bad or underwhelming even, just too much of the same emotion, threaded with the same general premise every time with not enough in between. I got burnt out I guess, maybe you did too? I never finished it. :\ Frieren feels much more fluid and balances itself away from extremes except when they're most impactful. More ups and downs and things feel much less predictable - yet still very comfortable. Shaping up to be one of those I might actually end up reading the manga for, and I almost never do that.
In my opinion, Frieren: Beyon Journey's End is really worth watching. The thing I liked most about it is the opening. The anime definitely has some negatives and the drama in it is good, but it didn't hit me that hard, so it is difficult to judge it from now, but from the start I can say that the anime is really good, but it isn't that great, for me.
Seeing Shy get talked about makes me ecstatic. Also, the bracelets are meant to be a reference to Gosei Sentai Dairanger, which Bukimi Miki brings up in the Volume 1 notes. Apparently he did the transformation pose as a kid.
@@DigeeTheGenie Most of the Disney seasons are actually really good. It's the "Neo-Saban Era" that's the overall weakest in quality. Also, it's technically MMPR 2 in that they used the Kibaranger suit for the White Ranger and adapted the mecha.
I'm beyond happy and hyped for the Undead Unluck anime and with the manga being insanely great no doubt in my mind David Productions will deliver which they have so far plus the music is awesome too. Also Frieren looking awesome and sounding great so far, JJK Shibuya Incident arc popping off, Spy X Family S2 is dope so far, Dr. Stone S3 part 2 LFG and I wanna check out 100 GFs, Shy, Shangri La Frontier and Pluto for sure when I get time.
it's crazy how in a season that's basically filled with GL (shy, vexations, stardust, ilwtv) and adjacent (100 gfs), the one that's known in its LN form (villainess) to be one of the most influential ever is the one having to fight off the competition. I will say that the art of villainess is intentional since its trying to use the budget constraints to look like an 00s shojo otome game. like the eyes were a dead giveaway (also seriously go fucking watch it. it gets like famously good with this/after this episode coming up since the real setting/conceit gets shown. There's a reason its the first GL show ever simuldubbed)
And what real conceit is that? I was kinda put off by the second episode sorta running the core initial joke into the ground for me so I might not continue it otherwise.
@@skeletor8951 That joke peters off. It's the initial setup, not what the series is about. It's already by far the best series this season, but if it's not for you, it's not for you. It'll lose a lot of male watchers soon when they'll get butthurt about Rei's discussion of homophobia in one of the next two eps, so it'll thankfully be a bit quieter afterwards.
@@skeletor8951 Yeah. the main joke will take more of a background. Actually, that process even started with first promise, Rae becoming the maid and that last conversation in second episode. I would describe it as peak queer fiction, discussing a large range of topics from homophobia and transphobia to rape and incest, even poverty and the church to some really philosophical topics like longevity of love and identity. It is pretty good at writing a story and foreshadowing future plot points and while it's world is somewhat standard until hitting the fifth volume, it serves it's purpose. Characters are good, even if most don't get a large spotlight, when looking at the entire story. There is a lot of them, and the focus is on the two main ones. Although, to be honest, Rae became really fascinating to me only in the last novel, something anime won't get to. Claire became really fascinating to me in the second half of the first half of the story, something I hope anime will cover. They are both very well explored by the end of first half, even if some things about Rae don't fit perfectly with the knowledge given to that point. So if you really dislike the gimmick or find Rae very uncomfortable, I recommend skipping, it will stay in the background for the entirety of anime, even if progressing further and further background as characters get used to Rae. The gimmick is dropped after the first half, but anime won't cover that.
i really hope you keep watching i’m in love with the villainess because the setting gets REALLY interesting… the manga and novel has a loooooot of themes on class and elitism and it gets really really good.
In Love with the Villainess might be one of the best Yuri ever bc after Volume 1 Inori got tired of Slice of Life commedy and fucking *hard* pivoted into political thriller and then hard pivoted again into high-concept sci-fi. and that last pivot makes it easily the most batshit insane, interesting, and unique Isekai world and setup ive ever seen but the Anime is unlikely to get to *that* particular twist.
Started watching a while back and just wanted to give my thanks for your recommendations and in-depth videos. I'd drifted out of anime fandom over the years, but your recommendations have helped me discover a lot of series I otherwise would have passed on. Yes, Odd Taxi included.
Undead Unluck is the manga equivalent of doing a 2nd playthrough of 3 Houses, and for preserving what makes it so great i will not be elaborating But seeing it and Frieren get such dream adaptations as a reader and being the only 2 shows I really truly cared about this season, i feel like I won a lottery somewhere and the cosmic toll will be fierce.
I’ve been watching Frieren, Shangri-la Frontier, and Undead Unluck. They are all so hype and so great. My favorites of the season for sure!!!! I’ve been a UU fan since chapter 5ish and I just started reading Frieren and SLF before the anime came out! Frieren is one of those softer fantasies that gives you gut punches in a meaningful way. Shangri-la Frontier is a breath of fresh air because it’s an Isekai that isn’t trashy or “if you die in the game you die in real life” bullshit. Just a series about a videogame with deep game mechanics to keep you going. Undead Unluck has one of the most creative power systems and world building I’ve seen in a long ass time. Not only that but having the team behind fire force shows that you can leave SHAFT all you want, but shaft can never leave you. (Ps: the groping shit goes away literally scene 1 of episode 2 so if your uncomfy with that it doesn’t stick around for very long)
Undead Unluck is definitely my favourite this season. At least out of the new ones, cause there's still the second season of Eminence in Shadow and I'm still kinda hyped about and hooked on that xD
I truly think that Frieran has a claim to anime of the year as of right now. Such a great show. Edit: I’m not saying it IS the anime of the year, I’m saying it has a CLAIM. God it’s not that hard.
Tearmoon empire is a must watch as a light novel reader trust me it got some really heartbreaking and epic moments. Especially ludwig and dion. Ludwigs loyalty and dion from the one who dealt the finishing strike for mia to the one who guard her legacy till the end.
I have been keeping up with the light novels for years, and I rarely read light novels because nothing has had such character development and worldbuilding I can get enough of!
Heard a lot of good things about it so I'll watch it. Really unfortunate and sad how garnt skipped it thinking it's just another villainess with no selling point, I hope he gives it a shot anyway after hearing all the good things about it.
I love tearmoon! It's the only series i've ever kept up with new releases on. I think my favorite character is Rania. Oh also a side note for newcomers: book eight (VIII) has a really downer ending (one of the worst glimpses into the bad timeline we've gotten so far imo) so if you haven't made it that far just be aware it's a very grim stopping point and you'll have to wait for book nine (IX?) for any resolution.
If ever you needed a reason to hate the mountains of shit that dilute the genres so people are less likely to give new stuff a try on the grounds that it's just more shit to put on the pile, there you have it.
I'm so happy you gave a shoutout to Undead Unluck even though the fools are shooting its chance at popularity in the foot by not making it available in Canada...
Disney always does this with good animes. First summer time rendering, heavenly delusion and now undead unluck. Fortunately really thankfully crunchyroll got apothecary diaries which wouldn't suffer being just another hidden gem in Disney jail like STR and HD.
@@amara560 bc Disney barely marketed it which still made a lot of people unaware of it. and you have no idea how poorly the blu rays sold which is what animes mostly rely on to make money aside from merch which there is pretty much none of it for heavenly delusion.
I came to Shangri-La Frontier basically on a whim. Saw its ad at the top of Crunchyroll while I was rewatching all of Doctor Stone for the third time. And I decided to give it a shot after the description told me it was actually *about* people playing a vast video game, rather than a trapped-in-a-game isekai plot. 2 episodes in, and the snow has proven to be quite a bit of fun, and the Absolute Virtue-sized plot hook at the end of episode 2 has me interested.
@@Unapologeticweeb The idea of a VR eroge game has me equally mixed between interested and horrified, like one would be part of a real version of David Cronenberg's _Videodrome._
Glad to see overtake getting some attention, since formula style racing animes are basically unheard of. It also does a good job at introducing different rules to people who are new to motorsports
Yeah I've been reading it since it's release and absolutely love it. It is so incredibly good and I knew one day it would make an awesome anime. But I tried to get a friend into it early on (after I knew this aspect improves) and after reading the first volume he refused to go further because of it even though I told him that it wasn't like that forever, he couldn't stomach it. And unfortunately it might be that way for a lot of the viewers of the anime which can hurt its ratings and might not let it go as far as I want it to. I hope it gets to go for a long time because man, everytime i think "that was sick, wicked sick!" And it can't get any better, it one ups itself again.
@@samfisher6606 Yeah it's less that he wants to #$%% her more that he wants to DIE, and $%^$ing her is something that could make it happen. Also after living so long he pretty much lost any care or human decency he had. (He also might have also lost his mind a bit) His character devolops significantly as the series progresses. And unlike other series he's called out for his attitude and behavor. And people rightfully tell Fuuko she goes too easy on him. Even in episode 2 Andy himself calls her a pushover when it comes to her feelings. So the series it'self is aware of how awkward their relationship is in the begining.
I think it would be worth to eventually make a video about great series that proved themselves after a rough start, as that would help a lot with Undead Unluck. The story gets far too good to just let a potentially significant number of people walk away after the first few questionable chapters/episodes.
Thanks to Jeff's curation, now I know what anime I wanna watch this season - Overtake! - Undead Unluck - Under Ninja - Shangri-la Frontier - Firefighter Daigo
The one video series I always go to as soon as it's uploaded. Love knowing whats good without having to subject myself to endless isekai harem ecchi softcore nonsense lmao
Can't believe Shangri-la Frontier is only now getting an adaptation. Found the manga almost a year ago now and it's sooo good. The characters are so expressive and fun. Can't wait to see how the adaptation goes.
Don't sleep on Tearmoon Empire. The first episode was mostly setup, but in addition to its great worldbuilding, it has the potential to be the comedy of the season as the light novels were the funniest I've ever read.
13:20 Realizing I'm old when Geoff has to reference "Overwatch" before "G Gundam" because viewers might have been too young to have understand what G Gundam was. 😔
This is the most-stacked season I can remember. I'm going with "Dr. Stone" as my #1 like I always do. Even if something else is technically better, "Dr. Stone" will always take the #1 slot if it's in a particular season. Also, I can't be the only one who gets confused by all of the factions and characters in "Dead Mount Death Play", right? There's just too many factions.
Dead Mount Death Play is a little too much to keep track of, but it's really not that complicated (i haven't started the second season yet). The confusion is mostly from connected mysteries

For people who are into yuri, I HIGHLY recommend I Favor the Villainess (though I do get why it didn't make the top list). While it's story starts pretty slow (I do think it might get more interesting after these first few episodes), and I am pretty sad that the animation doesn't seem to have been given much space to do anything interesting, the story does some interesting things that I hope will make it into the show, (directly talk about lgbt issues in a very frank and upfront way, like, as in the author is a lesbian and the light novel outright discusses the experience of being a lesbian in Japan-- I promise that's not a spoiler to say, it's a big theme of the story) and the world is actually a lot more complex than it looks on the outset, though the revelations as to how, what, and why, are very late into the light novel and I will not spoil them here. What I will say is that it is a real treat and very sweet, despite its flaws. I may be pushing it because I'm desperate for more yuri-- if shows like this one do well, maybe they'll make more. And maybe they'll upgrade the animation a bit...
Was kind of hoping "Power of Hope: Precure Full Bloom" would get at least an honorable mention, despite it technically being a sequel. The idea of a magical girl team reuniting as adults who have to deal with adult problems is an interesting one.
I would love to watch Undead Unluck....IF I COULD! Unfortunately Hulu is not available here in Brazil, so until some streaming takes over the transmission it is impossible to watch legally.
I'd personally like to recommend I Shall Survive Using Potions and Let Me Check the Walkthrough First. They are both rather fun, with parts of their premises being things I haven't seen in Isekais before.
9:10 Rentaro really confessed his undying love, like, ~7 times per year. Once almost every two months. Wow. Seeing his struggle fills you with... determination.
I got the first 3 manga of Frieren bc of your recommendation on an earlier video. Love it, great linework, story and it feels weirdly natural for a very fantasy-leaning world. The anime seems just as well made. I hope the songs will have memorable hits like MiA has
Funny you should compare Firefighter Daigo to Space Brothers - turns out it’s airing in the same timeslot! Space Brothers moved to the slot just before Detective Conan (5:30 PM Saturdays on NTV) in spring 2013 and stayed there till it ended a year later. That slot’s featured anime ever since, changing shows every two cours - among a number of one-offs like Love All Play last year and Ultimate Otaku Teacher back in 2015, it’s also the home of Yashahime, Mix: Meisei Story, the Ace Attorney anime, and every season of My Hero Academia from the second on. (Given MHA’s usual schedule, it’ll probably return in the spring when Daigo finishes.)
I saw the trailer, decided to take a peek at the source a week before the anime, cuz these kinda plots can ether fizzles out hard or be real good and then I caught up in a week hnnnnng my sleep. Now I dont wanna watch the anime cuz I remembered how most mangwa adaptations have gone. Nobleese's was a war crime. It didnt dwell in parts I wanted as long as I thought it would, cuz I wanted that shield hero princess moment then drop the series, but what did happen was more mature and then the unexpected Spanish inquisition happened and it got a pay off. The scale was much larger then I thought it was going to be. Reminds me alot of SSS class Unalive Hunter but more psuedo high fantasy and less edgy not including crow mask.
So far I'm only watching Eminence in Shadow 2. But... And I didn't even know they had made an anime of it... Apothecary Diary is actually really good. I've read a good bit of the unofficial English novel, lots of good stuff to be found in there. Only stopped when they stopped translating due to it being licensed... Maybe I should read the official translation. Here's hoping the anime is good too.
100 girlfriends is a such special series, some correct to call it Gintama (or Bobo-bo, as japanese call it) of harem genre, but it's legit one of the best execution of true harem concept in a genre. But besides crazy meta-comedy, it also does the harem part well, with beloved love monster MC, being an actual harem with every girl winning and being happy, record amount of kissing and dating, endless combination of interactions etc. I just glad it exist in current landscape
Migi & Dali is so damned good I’m sad it didn’t make your top rung. Same author did Sakamoto Desu Ga and she as a master of surrealist comedy. I’m sad she’s gone.
Mr. Mother's Basement i would like to thank you for selling me on Shangri-la Frontier. Im just back from reading through the manga and i am starving for more. I thought it would be all that all the way but then it goes to broken Fighting game, Gundam/AC-esque duels, the whole pencil's knight game thing, and then the fictional hero-villain "simulation" battle! Its action-packed, thoughtful and such an enjoyable read all the way through! Now i gotta wait who knows how long until this journey's end. Super recommend it for anyone to try giving it a read if not watch the anime!
FINALLY SOMEONE SAID THAT RON’S ABILITY TO MAKE THE CULPRITS OFF THEMSELVES IS LIKE A GEASS! Ron Kamonohashi Deranged detective is my current obsession. I can’t wait for all the episodes to come out.
I'm really excited for Undead Unluck. It's a super unique manga that really sucked me in. Fair warning - the first episode is gonna be rough if they follow the manga without changes. Like... REALLY rough. Like, this manga has a HORRENDOUS first 2 or 3 chapters. But when Undead Unluck is good, it is PEAK, not to mention weirdly compelling. Probably the best modern Shonen. ... And all that's assuming that the studio hasn't changed anything in the adaptation, because the Mangaka is on record publicly apologizing for how the manga began, so it's possible.
I liked every part of the opening episode! I assume you're referring to how Mr Undead makes an active effort to grope Ms Unluck? Eh, that just goes to show how unhinged he is and how little he cares for consequences or other people. I'm on board with it.
@@Nuthouse01 Just watched episode 1! You guys are right, it was great! But uh... I was also right on the money, they did change a lot from the manga. Just trust me when I say this is for the better. 😅
I have been watching Frieren since it launched and my GOD is it gorgeous...I mean it has an AMAZING soundtrack, beautiful scenery and the main character is quirky in a non grating way. Not to mention it is from her point of view where time really isn't a thing. And Shangri-La Frontier has been awesome so far! It is very refreshing to see the main character actually playing a game like WE the audience would, AND the fact that the MC loves 'crappy' games is just the hook I needed...that first episode was FIRE!!
Straight up, I love it when Japanese VAs speak English. It's always entertaining (no shade). Some of my favorites: Otherside Picnic (just that whole deal with the soldiers), and So I'm a Spider, So What? (Kumoko going "Oh Jesus!" and also slowly saying "I CAN'T-O SPEAK-A ISEKAIDO!")

Coming in as an existing fan of Paradox Live: you have GOT to. And I mean YOU HAVE GOT TO stick around for this show. The characters are all exceptionally written and the story is a true sci-fi cyberpunk drama that celebrates rap and hip hop in all forms. I am SO happy with how the first two episodes have come out so far (I even got to see the world premiere of the second episode!) and I'm extremely excited for new fans coming into the series who get to experience it for the first time. Already there are SO many foreshadowing bits and creative directing choices that are fantastic spots for people like me and will be fun to realize as the plot unravels. If you enjoy the music definitely go check out the rest of the songs that are from it - a ton aren't going to make it into the show and there's a ton of really good ones that you'll be missing out on. I personally recommend Ambitious by BAE!

So glad you sold 100 girlfriends so well. I'm a manga reader and I f-ing adore this series to death. It's wholesome, funny and kinda sad at times. The characters are all (mostly) great and the comedy is some of the funniest in anime in my opinion. I'm glad you didn't just throw it in the "worst of fall" group like most people would've done because it's truly something special and I'm so glad the adaptation is this good.
Geoff, have you watched season 4 of Scissor Seven yet? It absolutely goes bonkers on the animation quality of the battle scenes, which is basically the whole season.
A returners magic should be special is an amazing series and from the 2 episodes we've got so far it's extremely faithful to the manwha and you should definitely check it out if you like antimagic/magictech fantasy like I do
As somebody who has read "I'm in love with the villainess" and has a bestie who is obsessed with it, I have two things to say for anyone who may have an interest in it. One: light spoiler but it is not yuri bait it is actually gay. Two: the world building may start slow, but it does get much deeper going forward.
And sugarcoating around the fanservice until ch8
Can you spoil it for me? I have no intention of watching it otherwise

I went to the description looking for this very information. I don't know why he doesn't include a show list and where to watch for reference.
Gotta give props to Evan Call for the music for Frieren, which has been excellent. Of course, he's the same guy who did the music for Violet Evergarden as well.
Well, now I _have_ to watch this show out of principle. If this is anything like VE, it’ll be beautiful.
Oh, so it's like, actually the same show, but instead of being a war-scared human, they're a long-lived elf. Yeah, that's on the list.
He also did the soundtrack for My Happy Marriage.

As someone who's caught up to the manga on 100 Girlfriends, it's what I would describe as peak harem fantasy: all the ships win, there's barely any drama, everyone gets along. Our boy Aijou is playing with God Mode on, and it's hilarious.
💯% agree, who'd have thought to see healthy relationships in a harem manga 😋 Rentarou is peak boyfriend 🤣
Peak harem indeed. Its the harem Ive always wanted
Has the manga covered all 100 Girlfriends? If not, they could do someth8ng interesting for the last one
@@LoudWaffleIt’s also funny how generic he looks but as the manga goes on it’s revealed that he’s the most insane character of them all
As someone who came into Frieren almost entirely blind, mainly knowing how well-regarded the manga was and that the director had been responsible for Bocchi the Rock last year, I was… devastated, I think is the right word, in a positive sense.

Biggest pleasant surprise this season for me was Tearmoon Empire. I expected it to just be another take on the "Girl becomes the Villainess and must avert her own death," genre of story, but it actually does some unique things that have grabbed my interest. Just a few things to potentially peek people's interest in this show:
the MC has character flaws but is/was never a horrible person, just someone spoiled by her station in life and who grew up ignorant to the plight of the people, so she genuinely tries to learn from and correct her mistakes
the story thus far has balanced dark and emotional moments, with some genuinely solid moments of comedy
the people who caused the revolution are not depicted as totally evil or unjustified in how they treated the MC in her previous life
the supporting characters have distinct and memorable personalities and are written in a way that lets them simultaneously be both capable and dumb when the story needs them to act in a certain way
heya, fellow tearmoon fan here! A few questions: where are you in the series, are you reading the lightnovel or manga, and who is your favorite character? You don't have to answer if you don't want to, tearmoon is just a hyperfixation of mine and i don't know anyone who's read it so my outlets are limited lol

I read the manga of tearmoon empire, Its comedy Gold! The anime seems cut some content, But the overall presentation is very Good.

Apothecary Diaries is worth looking forward to. If you like political intrigue, mystery and an MC trying her best to stay under the radar but failing
This all you do just sit down and watch these lame ass shows

I'm so sad Apothecary Diaries didn't come out sooner, I'm sure it would be on your list if it had.

It's the current manga I'm most excited to read when a new volume drops. I'm glad it's getting a quality adaptation.

Billy's true motive, negation and its mechanism is also foreshadowed very clearly if you really think about the fact that:
1. Somehow he can't use Tatiana's, Juiz's, and Fuuko's negations and these three are the only ones having doubts about him betraying the Union
2. When Billy fought Juiz and she activated Unjustice, the resulting actions was him blowing Juiz's arm off. Naturally then his true vision of justice is then the opposite of harming Juiz
3. The way he just keep saying unfair lol
Other than that maybe foreshadowing about Backs, Victor asking about the day of week, and the constant looming panel of the moon are some of the stuff I can remember.

I dunno, it would be pretty tough to beat The Promised Neverland when it comes to that.
@@ThePreciseClimber
As someone who has read both series: Undead Unluck really *does* get that good.
Foaming at the mouth as I eat through the chapters

as a longtime Undead Unluck reader let me promise you new anime viewers: You have no idea what you're in for, this series has some insane zags.
Ive still cried eaxh episode but its a cathartic cry so its ok
If you like that feeling, also try Mushishi
To Your Eternity felt too much the same after a while... It's not that every completed story felt bad or underwhelming even, just too much of the same emotion, threaded with the same general premise every time with not enough in between. I got burnt out I guess, maybe you did too? I never finished it. :\
Frieren feels much more fluid and balances itself away from extremes except when they're most impactful. More ups and downs and things feel much less predictable - yet still very comfortable. Shaping up to be one of those I might actually end up reading the manga for, and I almost never do that.
@@zarteenagreed. Frieren had a great start. Hope it lives up to the hype
I don’t know how yall watch this sad stuff. I just cant.
@@skeletor8951 let's say what happens in the otome game she is in its not specially pretty and there's cool worldbuilding stuff coming.
@@nsnprotea2127 i had the impression it looked like a typical yuri bait show but you absolutely convinced me to watch it..!
i really hope you keep watching i’m in love with the villainess because the setting gets REALLY interesting… the manga and novel has a loooooot of themes on class and elitism and it gets really really good.
Undead Unluck is the manga equivalent of doing a 2nd playthrough of 3 Houses, and for preserving what makes it so great i will not be elaborating
But seeing it and Frieren get such dream adaptations as a reader and being the only 2 shows I really truly cared about this season, i feel like I won a lottery somewhere and the cosmic toll will be fierce.
I agree. I can think of several other shows from previous seasons that claim the AOTY but Frieren definitely has so much potential

Tearmoon empire is a must watch as a light novel reader trust me it got some really heartbreaking and epic moments. Especially ludwig and dion. Ludwigs loyalty and dion from the one who dealt the finishing strike for mia to the one who guard her legacy till the end.

Three episodes in, and I already see some more depth behind the fluffy (and a bit stalkerish) comedy facade, and I'm here for it!

I've read almost all of A returners' magic should be special, and it's definitely going to be good if they follow the source material.

A returners magic should be special is an amazing series and from the 2 episodes we've got so far it's extremely faithful to the manwha and you should definitely check it out if you like antimagic/magictech fantasy like I do
Geoff being edited into the backseat of the car at 6:20 is pretty great.
I hope it does well enough this season for us to get more going forward!
