Hello Yvonne, I have been dyeing wool for a living for many many years. The pot you are using is perfect! I would love to share some of my professional tips with you. Adding the vinegar at the beginning of the dyeing process "can" makes the wool grab the dye quickly resulting in the dye not fully absorb deep into your wool. If you let your wool simmer until your water is clear, (or almost clear) then add vinegar, the dye gently absorbs evenly throughout your wool. Also, I would suggest for that size of pot, the amount of vinegar needed is no more 1/4 cup, at most. May I also suggest you watch a video on dip dyeing, you would be great at it and it is a perfect dyeing technique for dreads. Hope my tips are helpful for you Yvonne. I love your beautiful dreads, you have encouraged me to try my hand at it Yvonne. Thank you kindly for your video. Darlene
Have you tried "Shocking" your wool in an effort to get it to felt? The process is super simple. Having hot, wet wool softens, expands and opens the cuticle of the wool. Now very quickly dramatically dropping the temperature causes that cuticle to slam shut in whatever orientation its in, typically floating around in a dye bath casing a big mass of it to matt up with itself. My thoughts on exacerbating this effect to further our goals of forming locks is to do the roving/hot water/soap soak and a primary rolling, then return the pseudo lock to the hot pot for a few minutes, let it THOROGHLY get warmed up... then quickly squeeze out the excess hot water and immediately dunk it into a cold bucket. Briefly palm roll while its chilling. This SHOULD exponentially enhance the felting effect internally in the lock, requiring much reduced efforts in palm rolling to get it locked up nice and tight.
GIRL. Thank you for this video!! THIS IS GOLD. I researched for almost three hours how people are making smooth dreads and not the shaggy messy kind, and you showed the tequnique I've been looking for! THANK YOU!
Von,pretty pretty please make dreads something you sell on your etsy forever and ever. They look so amazing. Especially since this is a new type of project for you. I'm seriously so amazed right now. I wanna buy the hell out of those.
Another tip Yvonne :-) ...the "acid dyes" you are using are excellent for wool. Majic Dyes sold in Ontario Canada are all time my favourite, the colors are very consistent. Natural dyes can be used for wool too (eg: beets, berries, flowers, etc.), however they fade with time. Darlene
@Yvonne Williams : Get your hands on a bamboo sushi mat. It is extremely efficient for felting! When felting flat stuff, just lay it out on the mat, roll the whole thing up and work the roll back and forth, open, turn item 90 degrees, roll up again, work, and so on. Happy felting! :)
I'm making a wig with a very specific design for a character. I kiiiiinda started the wig, only to change my mind a little on how the bottom of the hair will look. Is it still possible to do only the bottoms while it's already attached to everything? Or do I need to start over?
Thanks for this. I have thin hair and trying to pull off a Rangnar/Joker mashup for renaissance faire. This will do green ragnar dreads nicely. You rock 🎸
Ok....advice for those with short hair. Start small. These are heavy on your neck and hard to adjust to sleeping in. I would ease into it making a set thinner and shorter to start. After three days I had to take them out because of my neck. They are HEAVY and if you go out in the rain they are VERY heavy. Lol
I adore the dying process. You can dip one end of a wet lock then hang it to seep down, creating an ombré effect. After it dries dip the faded end in another color…. The options go on and on.
Love all your videos Going to try to start making some of my own cabochons this week. Never made anything before so this is all new to me but I just feel so inspired after watching your videos. Thanks again.
This video was so informative and answered some last questions I had. Thank you so much!! Your dreads look awesome and your vibe is like a hug to my soul! 💚✌️
FYI... do not use anything that touched the dye for food... measuring cup, pot, spoons etc. also, you don't need anywhere near that much vinegar, a half cup or so for that pot. and you can dye wool with food coloring as well... go for the wilton paste...
Hi. I am Brazilian in love with wool dreads and your turorial helped me a lot! Despite knowing that your video and channel is not focused on that, could you tell me how I keep the shape of the dreads after they are made, why I intend to put them in my hair and remove them only after about 30 days for maintenance . Don't they melt in the bath? Thank you very much in advance. And success to your channel!!
Thank you so much for this video!!! I don’t want to use the synthetic I don’t trust what they’re putting in them. I want to do wall just like this thank you again.
I love how the batch that were on your oven were kind of streaky I want to make a batch that match my salt and pepper hair and want to get that effect if you could share that would be great. Thanks in advance.
I was so looking forward to this tutorial. They look amazing. I just love anything purple and the different shades really compliment each other. Can't wait to see your next fibre dye tutorial. Tfs.
Stumbled upon this and was very helpful. You’re adorable! Silly question, what is the soap for? You said “if I need it” but how do you know you need it?
Omg!!!!!! You do everything! So talented. You could get me into trouble lol. I want to try everything 🤣🤣🤣 can you get them wet ? Or do you have to take them out when you wash your hair?
What size did your dreads turn out to be. They look like they're between sharpie and highlight thick. How many did you get out the 1lb approximately. I'm making white with touches of grey at the top for a Drow cosplay I'm working on. I'm trying to decided between dying my hair or using a wig and knowing how many it makes might be my deciding factor. (If I can't make enough for a full head of hair I might be shaving my sides for some funky drow hair. :) ) Thank you for the tutorial! It was unbelievably helpful!
That color is so hard to achieve. I've tried using the Rit dyes in yellow and then add the tiniest amount of light brown Rit dye. Kind of ends up mustardy at times, then I just add more yellow. I've found that dye baths make it hard to achieve that color.... I used more of a shallow pouring type method
How are these to sleep in? Ive made synthetic dreds and found a whole head installed was waay to uncomfortable to sleep with . I Took them out after only a week . Thinking these may be far more comfortable.
I havent tried it with hair dye yet but I tried it with fabric dye! you can dye them in a dyebath as shown in this video and i think you can get fabric dye at drugstores- if you have a specific haircolor you might need to order it though!
Hello, PiggyMom! I have had success with using goat milk soap, which I'm using here, as well as irish spring, though some folks swear by olive soap. I think personal preference might be the biggest factor here, though I would avoid any soaps that irritate your skin, you don't like the smell of, or that leave residues or are gritty like Lava Soap. The mat I am using is amzn.to/3u39Xkd Happy Crafting!
Thank you so much for this tutorial :). I know this video is two years old and probably won’t get an answer, but how many balls of the pre-dyed yarn did you use for a full set of dreads? I have found the yarn on Amazon, but they are only 50 gram balls.
Heya, Lady! For a full set of dreads I would recommend at least a pound of roving, this gives you enough to do a full head of at least sharpie thick dreads. I hope this is helpful!
Heya, Poonam! I haven't had any problems with mine breaking, but I made them dummy thicc; thinner dreads are more fragile as there aren't as many fibers holding everything together, but even the thinner dreads I've made have held together well through wear and washing. If you are able to use a wool with long fibers the felting will hold together better than with short fibers. I hope this is helpful to you!

Who else just really loves this girls vibe and herself
Great! I’d like to make my own extensions with wool so this was helpful, thank you
I'm so glad to be helpful to you! Good luck, and Happy Crafting!

So good!!! You are very generous. Thank you!
Thank you, Annie! I’m so glad you feel this way!
I adore the dying process. You can dip one end of a wet lock then hang it to seep down, creating an ombré effect. After it dries dip the faded end in another color…. The options go on and on.
Can I use any soap? Also I wonder, does the dread become longer after making them compare to the length you pulled out from the wool?
Omg your smile made me so happy 😍☺️👏🏻

Where can i get this in a curly style?
Thank you for your awesome video. I have watched a million while I wait on my wool to come in and yours by far has been the best.
Your voice, so soothing ❤

You are just wonderfully fun to watch!
I been looking for something for like this for ages quick question what’s the white vinegar for
Removes the soap and rebalances th ph of the wool. I also follow with a rinse, a bit of hair conditioner in the water. For softness and scent.
Thank you so much for this tutorial ❤
I love your energy 💜 Nice work 10:40
It's called roving? We're can I buy it? Pls
Thanks so much for the tutorial Yvonne!!! Amazing job. I live the color!!!
Your tutorial is so well done and easy to follow! Thank you!!
Beautiful work 💜
You said that a metal pot wasn’t ideal. What is a better product that should be used?
That is so interesting! I've wondered how they were made. They look awesome :)
They look so cool
Wow! This is fantastic! Can't wait to give it a go. What's the best way to fix them in your hair?
Thanks Yvonne.
Braid each one in individually
Love love love

Beautiful tutorial! How many packs if wool roving would I need to make a full head?
Super stoked that you shared this with us totally wanna place these in my hair 😍
Stumbled upon this and was very helpful. You’re adorable!

Thank you for the tutorial!!!!l I cant wait to make some, What is the name of the wool you use? And, where can I get it? Thank you
Very nice video ❤❤
Thank you! ❤️😊
Where did you order your roving wool from? Nothing I've tried comes out as smooth as these!
That looks cool asf fr
Omg!!!!!! You do everything! So talented. You could get me into trouble lol. I want to try everything 🤣🤣🤣 can you get them wet ? Or do you have to take them out when you wash your hair?
Lol, hey Aj! I do wear them in the shower, but try to not soak them every time as they take a while to dry
@@backtoearthcreations Jesus Mary and Joseph so my hair would never dry😳 not that it would stop me. I absolutely love them.
Love your streams never want to miss one :)
Looks great!

Olá aou brasileira . Eu amei seu vídeo,me ajudar muito 😍
Going from hot to cold water felts things faster and tighter. Do you ever use that method?
I'm working on my own set and cannot find any information on how to get a dark golden blond color on wool. I'd like it to look as natural as possible.
That color is so hard to achieve. I've tried using the Rit dyes in yellow and then add the tiniest amount of light brown Rit dye. Kind of ends up mustardy at times, then I just add more yellow. I've found that dye baths make it hard to achieve that color.... I used more of a shallow pouring type method
stainless steel works really well as well.
Super cool!!!!
What other kind of Matt could one use?? Would a towel be alright to felt/roll on??
Thank you!
What kind of wool do you use
what soap was that? I do make handmade soap as well and I was wondering if it was scented? and is the process CP or HP?
What is the foam block you are using, do you remember where you got it from?
How do you maintain them once you’ve got them in. Like washing your hair, etc.
It'd be really cool if you made some pendants with dyed wool in resin.
How are these to sleep in? Ive made synthetic dreds and found a whole head installed was waay to uncomfortable to sleep with . I Took them out after only a week . Thinking these may be far more comfortable.
How many for a thick full head do you think??
I’m having trouble with a line showing up on my dreads? What am I doing wrong?
Can you show how to do single ended
Do you think i can use hair dye to dye it? I wanna try matching it to my haircolors :D
I havent tried it with hair dye yet but I tried it with fabric dye! you can dye them in a dyebath as shown in this video and i think you can get fabric dye at drugstores- if you have a specific haircolor you might need to order it though!
i loooove you thank you so much!
How much wool would I have to buy to create a full head of de ?
What kind of soap should i use?
so much fun
Is there a certain soap? Ive seen ppl say olive soap. Any olive soap or a certain kind? Also where did you get your felting mat? Thank you

Amazing, beautiful! I have been waiting for a tutorial like this from you! How do you attach them to your hair? Can't to try making these.
you can french braid them into you hair by sections :)
How much would I need to do an entire head of dreads?
How do you attach them?
How much wool do you have to use. I'm going to make some for my sister and I don't know how much it get
Heya, Jones! I had gotten 1 pound, like this: amzn.to/2XYnFsx and it was plenty

What kind of soap did you use, can I use any other soap?
Hi, where can you get the roving? Mine came in bunch, not a long thread like piece
Will they break ?

Hi do you install the dreadlocks on an elastic or ribbon to put in a ponytail? Love the look I would like to do it but not make it permanent.
I think she just braids them into her hair
What kind of foam are you rolling on?
Small bubble wrap works, so does a bamboo placement. Something textured to help massage the wool.
I want to make my own. I found out the hard waybi am allergic to the synthetic 😢
Could you use Rite dye as well? Or does the acid dye work better?
I've made dreads using Rite Dye, and yes, you can use it. A bit smelly but great colours out of it.
