I'm a fluent English speaker and I bought the Advanced Grammar In Use because of that... I do not regret, but if someone asks me whitch one buy then I'll certainly say to buy the English Grammar In Use (the blue one).
After years of experience with all of them, multiple versions, only decent one is navy blue one. For everyone between lower intermediate up till upper intermediate level. As for Advanced version - at best confusing. When it comes to this level and this series I cna only honestly recommend Advanced Vocabulary in Use, no matter which edition really. All these are good. There are way better books for this level. For complete beginners Essential one is ok but not a a stand alone resource and not for self-study.
Thank you for sharing your experience! It's probably better for a beginner to start learning grammar with the help of a teacher, so, yes, I agree. I'd go even further and add that even advanced learners can benefit from Blue Murphy. It's a really good book for self-study.
This is such a great comparison video! Both books are amazing, as you said, and as an EFL/ESL teacher I can swear by these (and red murphy for beginners/pre-intermediate lvls). Great video dear!
Great books . I have them both and I attained the highest grammar level by studying along with them 😊. Thanks God I found them on my own long ago and now I can say with all confidence that I am practically a c2 english student 🎉
Your English pronunciation is great!! I always watch and listen your videos!! I always listen to your English before studying to boost my motivation! I’m aiming to achieve a pronunciation as beautiful as yours!😊
My compliments on your fluency. Great display of your vocabulary, over and above the intermediate and advanced. It is a good idea to guide learners that reading authentic material such as books, magazines and the daily news will being a much needed expansion of vocabulary in the different themes of conversation. Textbook learning books have a small range of vocabulary. Nothing like reading and writing on authentic communication.
Besides Blue Murphy, there is also a Green Murphy. I believe it stands between the red and the blue ones, but it would be interesting if you gave your opinion on that. Other question I have is about the Green non-Murphy keys: as the questions are open (as you stated in the video), does it contain answers? Thanks for the video.
You're welcome! 🙂 I've never heard about the Green Murphy. www.goodreads.com/series/87922-grammar-in-use-cambridge There's a green book by Murphy with some extra exercises, though. Yes, my book does contain answers at the end, but I believe that some editions may not.
Grammar in Use Advanced has 100 units but I have an older edition of this book consisting of 120 units. 16 units are devoted to tenses. Why did they decreased the number of units in the new edition? Anyway it's a great textbook that teaches grammar rules thoroughly
Interesting. On their website, it's said that "This revised edition focuses specifically on the complexities of grammatical choices that advanced students need to appreciate." More basic information about tenses is probably in the Intermediate version already.
I'm kinda confused. As a non- native, a total beginner and a teen also, which should be the best book for me to start with? The blue one or the red one? I think it's not the green one at least.
If you're a beginner, then the Red Murphy (Essential Grammar in Use) will be better for you. However, if you're a complete beginner, then consider finding a grammar book with explanations in your native language. I learned the basics of English grammar in this way.
An Edition published in your country with comments for native speakers of your native language. A complete beginner is A0 level ( A1 is after 1 year or 1, 5 year of learning- about 100h- 120 or 150 h of language learning). Doesn't have to be this series. Book like this with comments in English only should be used from level B1 with a teacher and from level B2 can be used with minimal help of the teacher. There are level A0 grammar books for teens or for young learners, so look for such.
Cheers for the video! I was wondering which book to buy. I will go for the green one. I'm already a native speaker of English, I want to improve my grammar and learn the structure of english rules. It sounds like the green is the way to go.
Awesome! 👍🏻 If you want to go deep into grammar, you can also check out Longman Student Grammar of Spoken and Written English by Douglas Biber, Susan Conrad, Geoffrey N. Leech and Practical English Usage by Michael Swan.
I hadn't been studying for 7 years. It's a pretty long time. Isn't it? Recently, I needed to review the English grammar for IELTS. There were almost 10 topics and sections which i had to review for IELTS grammar rules. Unfortunately, I've forgot it all. Tense Systems are still nightmares for me.😂 I took a mock test to know my current English level. Surprisingly, my results were not that too bad. During the test, I just automatically focus on what sounds right for the answers because TV-shows might be doing the work for me.😂 For all those years I watched shows finally paid off I think. Finally, I come to know that grammar is just part of the language. I asked myself that "Do I fully understand my native language grammar?". I speak my language everyday but I don't really know the rules and structures. By the way, I still need a lot to do on my grammar knowledge. Thank you for your suggest. It seems that the Blue Murphy might be the right one for me. 😂😂
Your long journey was well worth the effort! Yes, you're absolutely right: the best way to learn grammar is to combine the study of grammar rules and listening to/reading content in English. I talk about my grammar routine in this video: ruclips.net/video/_husZ7n1mqY/видео.html. You might find it useful. Continue watching TV shows and improving your grammar with grammar books! Tenses will make a lot of sense in a while.
I'm a highschool level student trying to improve my English to be qualified to study a LLB course, it requires IELTS band 7 but since I'm already above that level I'm aiming for band 8. I recently just bought the green book because I've gone through some pages in the blue book and I found the exercises not challenging at all. The blue book is enough if you're not aiming for academic achievements that require high level English knowledge. Learning English could be hard but interesting for non native speakers like me.
Thanks lady . I am a great lover of English. But the way you explain ,left me really crazy. I am using all the 3 books. Iam steel learning. My desire is to talk to you in English. I am from india .lam looking forward having a conversation with you to improve my skill.
Thank you! I see that you have a textbook with e-book version, what the e-book gives, only voicing sentences, or can you do exercises and immediately see the answer? What other additional functions does an e-book have?
Hi! I’m about to prepare myself to TOEFL exam and I’m wondering if the green book will be the good choice to practice? Or there is any other book option? Thank you 😊 I already have the blue one almost finished
I haven't taken TOEFL, but, as I understand, it's quite similar to IELTS, which I has taken in the past. Grammar is only one part of what you need to study to ace the test, but yes, I do think that Advanced Grammar in Use might be helpful for you. However, I also believe that mastering all grammar aspects from the Blue Murphy might be more than enough to get a high score in the exam. Grammar is only a tool that will help you create correct sentences and express yourself in English via speaking and writing. No-one will test your grammar in a direct way. The most important thing is that you work on eliminating your most common and annoying grammar mistakes, not on forcing ALL advanced grammar structures into your essays and speech. At least, that's what I've been taught while studying for IELTS.
Go through a TOEFL sample tests book as your main thing, and keep the grammar book on hand next to you, whichever fuller one you have :) When you run into things that aren't familiar to you, look for them in the grammar book and practice that unfamiliar point for a little bit, tying it into the test practise . Instead of just doing grammar exercises day and night. It's very important to be familiar with the speed of speech in the test, with their texts, structure , etc. and the familiarity only comes from doing many-many of the past papers.
Hi, I noticed you have good videos, congrats for that. I would like to know if you consider that blue grammar book could be enough to get a solid C1, if I plan to get a C1 in IELTS Academic (7.5 overall, and none band lower than 7.0) 🌟😟
Your video is informative. But here you are comparing Raymond's intermediate grammar book an the green book for advanced learners. Hopefully looking forward to watch another comparison video with English grammar in use ( Advanced) book.
Revising the grammar from the Blue Murphy and consolidating your knowledge can still benefit you and your English. You can also use some grammar resources from the internet, like this one www.englishpage.com/. It has a lot of good exercises on quite a few topics, and you might find them a nice addition to the Murphy book.

Hi :) I recently bought The Essential Grammar in Use because i thought that since i never study English was better to have a stronge foundation and, when i finish this one, i can move for the others but i dont know in which order is better to study the units. Could you help me with that?
Starting with the basics is such a good plan! I'd start from the first unit and then just move forward. I'd also add some simple reading to the study routine to see how grammar works in real English texts.
Great video, Olga! very useful. I wonder if Grammar in Use Upper-Intermediate exists and if it does, is it better than Grammar In Use for Intermediate learners?
Thanks! I don't think that it exists, at least I couldn't find anything like that on the Cambridge website. Grammar in Use for Intermediate learners is a classic, and I genuinely believe that most Upper-Intermediate and Advanced learners can benefit from studying it.
Hi, thank you for your great information. Although I’ve been studying English using blue Murphy, do you think I should buy green non-Murphy? I will apply for a medical job in the US in the future. And the requirement concludes high TOEFL score so I have been also preparing TOEFL exam. I hope I can get your reply.
You don't have to buy the green book. There are quite a few grammar resources online that you might find useful. I share a few in this video: ruclips.net/video/1eGRqOFf1oA/видео.html. Good luck with your studies, and I hope you'll be able to get the job of your dreams in the future!
eventually, every word has its own grammar.... for an advanced learner who knows the blue Murphy enough (sentence structures, conditionals, preps etc), ... I believe It's better to revise a good advanced level dictionary for the grammar of a particular word... It's very easy to drown in the detail... every one need to find a sweet spot for just enough grammar/vocabulary for their own life/experience/interests.... thank you Beauty for the video... really inspiring... and a good comparison of the most famous grammar books...👍
Hello! I know it's a bit late but i just want to know something really bad about these Raymond Murphy series. Would you say that the intermediate book is sufficient enough to acquire a C1 lv or it's necessary to study the green one? Thank you so much in advance!
I believe that if you're really good at using all the rules from the Intermediate Murphy, it should be enough to get a C1 level at an exam like IELTS, for example.
I haven't seen this type of exercises in the grammar books for self-study I read, only in textbooks like English File. They are not focused exclusively on grammar, though, but on everything: reading, listening, etc.
i have a question do we need to study every book for every stage in these sireis books english grammaer in use and english idioms in use and english coolacations in use and english verbs in use and english phrasel verbs in use or what are the books that we nned only and thanks
It's totally up to you. You don't have to buy and study all these books. I talk about great resources to find collocations in this video: ruclips.net/video/U8EF-9LAY3M/видео.html.
Hi Lady, I would like to know your opinion on a subject. I already speak and read fluently, but I make some mistakes in speaking and many mistakes in writing. Do you believe that the Intermediate book has enough grammar content to make these corrections and improvements? After many years of trauma in learning grammar due to terrible teachers, I managed to understand how beautiful grammar is and can be an auxiliary tool to accelerate the learning of another language. Do you think the advanced book is indispensable too? I have no intention of writing books or doing academic research, I just need to communicate well with friends, in my job and write technical texts from the information technology area. I'm asking this because I put together a study plan for 3 months to analyze all the content of the intermediate book and have a solid foundation to move forward on my journey. If you say that the advanced book has relevant content that you didn't find in the intermediate book then I will put together a 5-month study plan. To give you an idea of how important it is for me, I left my job to dedicate myself 100% to this study during the 3 months. I will only go back to looking for a job in my field after I feel it resolves these shortcomings in my English.
English Grammar in Use for Intermediate Learners should be more than enough for you. It's a great book with everything you need to communicate effectively with others. I wish you luck with your plan! I really hope you'll be able to feel more confident in a few months. Happy studying!
I don't think that there's a better way of doing that than communicating with different people. I understand that it's easier said than done, but I seriously don't think that there's any other method as effective as speaking with and listening to other people.
I'm not familiar with the books you've mentioned. Personally, I prefer learning great phrasal verbs from the fictional books and TV shows I'm consuming. Here's a video on how I do it though reading: ruclips.net/video/181OwxNOM9E/видео.html
The video is about two grammar books: Intermediate (Blue) and Advanced (Green). There's also another book, Red, that is aimed at Elementary learners of English, if that's what you're asking about.

Essential Grammar in Use by R.Murphy is a good book that explains the basics of English grammar (in simple English). It works well for studying on your own.
@@LadyGiraffeEnglish Good Afternoon Lady, Greetings From Fortaleza Brazil, I've received my books today, The Books Are : The Orange Essential Grammar In Use Fourth Edition. The Blue English Grammar In Use Fifth Edition. The Green Non-Murphy Advanced Grammar In Use Third Edition.
I wish I could help but I haven't tried this version of the book. You can read reviews on Amazon or google them. I like learning about other people's opinions on different products on Reddit, for example.
Blue Murphy is a great book. I believe that you can buy it online from pretty much any country (probably). I don't have any specific recommendations, sorry. I used to recommend BookDepository, but this online bookshop has closed recently, unfortunately. You can google "Murphy grammar book buy [your country]."
Years of testing them all across people of all ages, yes, I confirm this. Only this one really makes sense. No matter which edition. You can save pruchasing it second-hand, even years old one or you cen splurge on the latest edition. It only depends on your budget. This one is well designed methodologically. And it's rare. Gives people great basics in grammar. One just has to work through it all once in their lifetime in honest and consequent manner and you have great foundations in English for life.
Hi new sub here. I have a question. Is it legal to make a grammar content straight from that book? I am planning to start my own youtube channel with grammar as my contents and I am planning to use that book as my reference.
Hey! It's a difficult question. You might want to check out fair use laws for your country. In most cases, you can use some bits and pieces of copyrighted materials like that for educational purposes. Good luck with your channel! Grammar is a wonderful area to create content on.
Any book, really. Reading is generally regarded as a wonderful way of improving vocabulary, and it doesn't matter much what you're choosing to read. You can also check out the English Vocabulary in Use series by Cambridge University Press. It's a reputable series of textbooks, though I haven't used anything like that in ages, so I can't give you my opinion on it.

Thanks Lady Giraffe. I've subscribed your channel.

Look for the series Destination. Levels B2 and C1.

It's important not to focus on tiny details too much, I agree.
Mam teach me I'm very interested in English
@@LadyGiraffeEnglish Wow, you replied do fast. Thank you so much you are awesome! 🙂
@@Elespectador94 Glad to be helpful!
I have been started learning the the both blue and green books but I find little unnecesary sections in green.
Good for you!
The green book is supposed to be a bit excessive since its aimed at learners who want to dig deeper into the English grammar.
What's your assesment about wren and martin's High School Grammar?
I've never used it. The reviews on Amazon seem to be mixed.
I'm looking for exercises which have reading passages with conjugation exercises in context, rather than the one liners.
I haven't seen this type of exercises in the grammar books for self-study I read, only in textbooks like English File. They are not focused exclusively on grammar, though, but on everything: reading, listening, etc.
@@LadyGiraffeEnglish You can find them online but they are few and far between. Test English has some good ones.

Are these two books suitable for those who want to learn British English? And which one is better for learning B2 level? 🍀
Yes, they are focused on British English. The Blue Murphy is probably the one that you need.

Please send both books links. Please
I don't have any.

How to improve communication skills?
I don't think that there's a better way of doing that than communicating with different people. I understand that it's easier said than done, but I seriously don't think that there's any other method as effective as speaking with and listening to other people.
who is better?phrasal verbs dictionary cambridge or phrasal verbs in use cambridge?❤️❤️❤️
I'm not familiar with the books you've mentioned. Personally, I prefer learning great phrasal verbs from the fictional books and TV shows I'm consuming. Here's a video on how I do it though reading: ruclips.net/video/181OwxNOM9E/видео.html
Phrasal verbs in use.
How many books did you refer to? I got confused 😅
The video is about two grammar books: Intermediate (Blue) and Advanced (Green). There's also another book, Red, that is aimed at Elementary learners of English, if that's what you're asking about.
Hello actually i am beginner of English spoken sp please guide me which book is better for me and i want to clear my all doubts with clarity so suggest about it
The blue one.
Please review Oxford guide to English grammar by John Eastwood
If I ever come across it, I'll check it out.
Which book is the best one to start grammar from basics ?
Red. Essential Grammar in Use by R.Murphy.
Mam I've read first and second edition of raymond murphy can i go directly on 4th edition actually i couldn't find 3rd edition in india online tell me...
My book is more than 10 years old, and it's perfectly fine to use, so you don't need to buy every new edition to work on your grammar. Or are you talking about Essential vs Intermediate vs Advanced Grammar in Use?
@@LadyGiraffeEnglish mam now my level is b2 so please suggest me good books so that i can reach c1 level... Should i study 4th and 5th edition of raymond murphy or martin hewing? Or both?

Please make a video on best books for vocabulary when you will get free time.
I haven't used textbooks to learn vocabulary in a decade now, so I probably can't compare any vocabulary books at the moment. Reading books in general is my way to go about improving my vocabulary, and it's working wonderfully.

Any book, really. Reading is generally regarded as a wonderful way of improving vocabulary, and it doesn't matter much what you're choosing to read.
