  • Tobin and Christen welcome the world-class former coach of SD Wave and Manchester United, Casey Stoney. In this episode, Tobin and Christen look back on the incredible two matches of the NWSL semifinals. What impressed them most? Who impressed them most? And what is the secret sauce to building a successful team? They also look ahead to players they are excited to watch, featuring highlights and player cards from EA FC. Then, they are joined by their former coach at Manchester United and friend, Casey Stoney. In their conversation with Casey, they discuss her coaching style. How much does empathy play a role? What did she learn as a player that helped her become a better coach? And why did she use a street sign to shovel snow? Then, they discuss her shocking dismissal from SD Wave, how it affected her family, and why Tobin and Christen firmly believe it was a bad decision by the club. Lastly, they discuss the NWSL playoffs, what Casey has been seeing from the 4 remaining clubs, and who she thinks may win it all. Plus, Tobin loves Christmas presents under the tree, Christen shares a memorable goal scored by Tobin and so much more in our Community Questions!

I loved this episode. I believe this was the first time we've heard from Casey on what happened at San Diego. I think it says a lot about you two that she chose do it on the recap show. Wherever she lands will be lucky to have her.

Wishing the best for Stoney, it’s only a matter of time for her to go coach internationally so a club better scoop her up now

Firing Casey Stoney singe handedly took SD Wave's season from potentially positive, to all around negative. It was one of the worst sporting decisions I've ever experienced in my lifetime. I just wish Jill Ellis was held accountable.

Maybe not super into the actual subject, but I'm a brazilian fan that have always admired christen and tobin in a way that sometimes made it difficult to root against the USWNT. And I'm so glad to hear you guys talking about Marta like this, really understanding her limitations and her strong points in this specific context. You guys were always really admirable players, and obviously are admirable people too. Rooting for the best for you always, women's football can only benefit of such an iconic duo talking about it. Wish you guys the best always x

US person here, and I think maybe since we didn't have a lot of football culture growing up on the women's side or men's side the same way the rest of the world does it has let us be able to respect and root for so many clubs and national teams at the same time. We didn't grow up having parents that were tied to a certain club or even live in a city or state with a club team so we don't always have that same ride or die mentality or attachment to teams like how it is in other parts of the world if that makes sense? And I think because of that, like even being from the US I had Marta's poster on my wall growing up and was even sort of rooting for her and Brazil in this last Olympics even though they were playing against the US. And cuz I also knew Marta was retiring from national duty and this was her last game so part of me wanted her to have that gold medal! Idk I guess I'm just trying to say that I know the US is a country sort of known for our nationalism lol, but when it comes to women's soccer, a lot of us are also rooting for countries and clubs all over. Like I'm rooting for Orlando pride tomorrow cuz of Marta. When Houston Dash would play, I'd root for them cuz of Tarciane. We want to see success in women's soccer everywhere

I was hoping and waiting for Casey Stoney to guest on the show since the first episode. It was because I admire her so much but also because honestly and personally Tobin & Christen's time with Manchester United will always be special to me as a football fan. It was such a crazy time, for the world and for me, and having football back even if in such absurd circumstances was comfortable. I also really fell in love with that Manchester United team, it's incredible how many great young players Stoney helped and developed, if only the club invested in THAT team, with Tobin and Christen there to give maturity and experience, they could have been really successful. But most of all I loved what Stoney meant to the players, how she fought for them, how she managed to look after Tobin and Christen too. Despite the ending, despite the crazy times the world was living, THAT Manchester United team really created something special. Seeing Stoney on the show with Tobin and Christen again was so nice! Mostly because I feel like they really speak the same language and because Stoney actually embodies all the aspects a great coach should have. It was so fascinating to listen to the way she embraced the US style of football, the US mentality, when she thought "we have to stop missing" and Christen suggested "We have to keep trying". I would listen to Stoney talking about football, both played and coached, forever because she really makes this sport better. I also always hoped to see her coach Tobin or Christen once again and who knows, she said she loves NWSL and Tobin had a weird light in her eyes when she asked about job interviews ..... 😂

as a Gotham fan who was a little sensitive about Tobin's comments last episode (nothing personal we can all have our own opinions!) I feel better knowing Tobin's rant about KC was bad enough they had to cut it lmao, I was wondering why she said her least favorite was a toss up between Gotham and KC and then only talked about the issues she saw with Gotham I guess we know why now
Also the Courage has won both the shield and the championship twice in 2018 & 2019, Tobin must have blocked it out haha

At the time Stoney's firing was made public it was clearly shocking and misguided (at best). Now to find out it was backhanded, shady, and frankly shameful from the GM. It's sad but also inspiring. Wherever Stoney lands in the NWSL I hope SD Wave and their GM will never know an ounce of peace against a Stoney-led team.

In basic training for the US Army in the late 1970's-early 1980's they tried to do co-ed basic training but stopped it. The lesson was men respond more positivity to the fear, aggressive coach approaches. Women did not respind positively to that style and it ended up demoralizing most thus was strongly counterproductive. After a couple years testing this in the military they dropped co-ed basic training due this reason.

She is very defense oriented and also works better with strong strikers like Alex. I did not enjoy seeing CP23 play under her because their styles didn't match. And I feel like this would be the case with Thompson too. On the other hand, she is very well respected and would likely have some pull in bringing bigger names to acfc to improve the roster which is something neither of the previous coaches had.
