A good tip when lapping valves into their seats is to put a light spring between the valve head and the guide. This means you can stop ever few turns, let the spring lift the valve off the seat and dribble a little bit of kerosene around the valve, this carries the grinding compound back into the lapping zone. A proper valve grinding power tool, like Black and Decker used to make, is not rotary but oscillating .

Using a small engine to start a larger engine, which is then used to start an even larger engine, is particularly entertaining for me. Well if that wasn't fun , Caterpillar doesn't run.😊 And Matt , this has been a real hit with your fans here too. It's such great relief that the pony motor on Cat equipment has been retired. You make all that hard work look easy Matt. Everytime you dive into one of these earthmover projects, I am reminded of how important the periodic maintenance of the equipment is, as I was taught in my dozer operation course back in '82. Another great video. I very much appreciate it. I believe that you should make this grader all that it can be, not neccesrily a complete rebuild, but all the important functional stuff. Just my two cents.

It just goes to show that just because it’s OLD, it doesn’t mean it can RUN. I miss hauling construction equipment/oversized stuff here&there(I’m mostly tanker these days), and watching you resurrect these old beasts keeps me in touch. It’s not lost on me at the end, with the old Autocar cab being brought in with your skid steer…..glad you’ve not given up on that truck, even with the more/capable orange Autocar in use…
You are indeed The Diesel Whisperer!! That CAT can idle pretty slow and smoothly. Definitely needed some TLC. Thanks for making the content. Bet it was great to be working in the shop vs. out in nature!
Yes, it is great to see him use one piece of equipment to start the starter for another piece of equipment. Very innovative. Most of those old dogs have update kits to replace the pony motor with an electric starter, but I doubt he will eve do it, unless he wants to use this as one of him main pieces of equipment. Otherwise he will keep it pure.
Amazing at how the old stuff never wants to die. 2 decades ago we carried 2 giant batteries into a field and within 20 minutes had an old D6 from the 1960's running that had been sitting for a least 5 years. I have been hooked ever since on these old machines, big or small. Great video and the best part is that you saved one from the scrap man. Once these old beasts are gone they're gone forever. Keep up the great work.
Seeing you soaking the carburetor in the cleaner bucket reminded me of something that happened 40+ years ago. I was working with a guy doing fluorescent light repair, and we worked out of a brand new F250... bright red, with a service body on it. My boss had purchased a gallon of Gunk HydroSeal carburetor cleaner so that I could overhaul a carburetor for him, and it was in the back of the truck. Somehow, the can tipped over and the lid cracked open just enough to let it leak on the bed in each of the "furrows". It was only about an hour later when we realized (that stuff has a distinctive odor) that it had spilled, and wherever it sat in that new truck bed, it took all of the paint off! I can remember that smell to this day.
ive been a CAT engineer ever since i left school but when i came in the 33/3400 series was on their way out, and we still had some occasional D399's come through, i love seeing the really old stuff with pony motors and the origins of the stuff i see every day, i kept all the old manuals when they were cleared out, just for personal reading, none of these cool old machines really exist over here in the uk anymore.
There’s a chapter of the ACMOC over your side of the Atlantic. I haven’t kept up in 10 years or more, but there’s an active community of CAT a holics if you look around.

Thanks for another long video Matt and I’m delighted that you got both engines up and running, you have a great channel here and long may your viewer numbers increase 👍🏻🏴
It's amazing how you bring back these old diesel engines to life the grader looks pretty good for it's age
Great job Matt, I understand now why the $102 seal is worth it, So appreciated that you have the patience to follow through and do it right.
Well if that wasn't fun , Caterpillar doesn't run.😊 And Matt , this has been a real hit with your fans here too. It's such great relief that the pony motor on Cat equipment has been retired. Choice job cutting the seat on the valve. A cutter for the seat in the head would have been a great improvement. You got it to seat though 👍
Every time you acquire one of these old machines I think to myself that these are just big pieces of scrap metal. Yet somehow with your extreme tenacity you are able to breathe life into them. I truly admire your abilities sir!
I may get tired of seeing old machines resurrected but I will never tire of seeing Matts face when they start up!!! Keep em coming
Congrats to you Matt!!!!!!!
I love to see your excitement when you get one of these old girls fired up & running after you have worked so hard ,sometimes for a few day`s getting all the problems sorted & fixed. You have come a lone way since you started your channel with your mechanic abilities & know-how. With almost 600 thousand subscribers to your channel, you my friend are doing it right, and you have earned all of it, no easy task at all. You deserve to be proud of your success Matt. Take care buddy!!
Thanks so much!!
I was so impressed with your stuck flywheel diagnosis as well as your chop saw starter idea. I would never have thought of either. Great fun to watch your videos. Thanks Matt!
an absolute pleasure to see your enthusiasm when she roared to life! well done matt!
There is nothing more that gives a mechanic a thrill than making a piece of machinery running that has sat idle for many years.Congradulations on a job well done
Excellent job Matt, personally i'd never thought that i'd watch a video about old machinery getting repaired without skipping a second and also you make it look so simple. Can't wait to see it driving 👏
Unbelieveable that this old stuff comes back and sounds so dang good.
Great job!
Give your Dad a big hug Matt! That man deserves it for producing such a fine young man!
You are indeed The Diesel Whisperer!! That CAT can idle pretty slow and smoothly. Definitely needed some TLC. Thanks for making the content. Bet it was great to be working in the shop vs. out in nature!
Thanks Matt for taking us along. I love your Pony Starter! Great innovation . Always enjoy your restoration efforts, Keep them coming!!
The ones with a good pony motor, you take a rope and a gallon of gas and go get them started in midwinter!
Go and have a look at 'Squatch253' D2 cats are his specialty ;-)
There’s a chapter of the ACMOC over your side of the Atlantic. I haven’t kept up in 10 years or more, but there’s an active community of CAT a holics if you look around.
This was such an excellent video... Matt, you have now earned the official title of "Miracle Worker". Thanks for sharing this journey with us... quite impressive.
Matt, I love your enthusiastic reaction when these old beasts roar back to life. 😃
Thanks for sharing as always.
Fom the UK another dose of Matt passes. We have Spiderman, Superman and now Catterpillar Man. He brings a smile to, my old bones. Keep it up Matt/
LMAO @ 57:22 , CONTACT!! "Chop Saw Pony Motor Starter device" Worked really well! Hell Yeah Matt! 👍💯
Watching you when you get one of these things running is like watching my kids on Christmas Morning.
I'm old now and am living my years watching guys like you do such great work.
It is an absolute joy wo watch you Matt. God Bless You, your family and all the stragglers you drag home.
Give a big hug to your wife for me for encouraging you in your quest as the Superman of Old Iron !!!
Hey Matt, great filming in this episode. I could see everything you were doing in great detail! A please to watch! Be well.
Morning Matt, you definitely are creative!
Also, you have changed my outlook on old iron running again!! The way that cylinder was rusted, just amazes me!! Y'all be safe!! God Bless!!
Matt, I enjoyed your grader enthusiasm!! I'm a retired acft mechanic and retired farm girl, was just as excited when you got both of them going!! Bet you are overly excited that you have a decent shop to work in!! Keep up the excellent videos and work, from Ne.
I think its time to invest in a borescope to look into those hard-to-reach areas. Also, excellent work bringing this old-timer Cat engine to life! Now time to make it run...
That was a lot of work on both engines to get the machine going, and a nice long video as a special treat for us. Good job, Mr. Creek!!
That is the first time I have ever seen a pony motor with its own pony motor, absolutely brilliant Matt ,that is some creative thinking there
I take it the work in this video took more than 20 times the duration of the video...
Thanks for bringing us on this repair project :)
Holy cow! Can’t believe how well it runs. Well done Matt.
If I had not seen it with my own eyes I would not have believed anyone could do it. But, you did it Matt! Way to go
One of the most fun videos. What’s amazing is that I basically understood all the issues.
I love bringing an old piece of equipment back to life I can almost feel it in my heart when it comes to life that thump thump of the pistons is almost magic. I really enjoy your videos.
Almost one hour later for us, and days later for Matt, it RUNS! Holy Mechanic Skills, Batman! ❤✨👏👍💪😍😁
Nice to see you got the road grader running after all those years on the field, I see you have a 4 legged assistant with you today to help out. 🐕🔧🔨
By the way, I’m someone who tore a shoulder trying to start stubborn equipment over the years. Obviously putting off carb rebuilds, etc.
Your cutoff saw starter is brilliant!
Nice looking project and how satisfying to see both engines start up so easily! This rig is going to be awesome when it’s completed and cruises to a show with the Autocar and lowboy trailer. I really dig old iron commercial vehicles. They are an important piece of our country’s history. Nice work Matt!
