It’s a shame that G. Martin, along with Paul and Ringo as well as the estates of John and George, didn’t take the opportunity to remaster the FAAB/RL singles for the ‘19 singles launch or for the release of Now and Then last year
I feel we'll get an Anthology re-release for its anniversary. On top of cleaning up John's vocals for 'Free as a Bird' and 'Real Love' they'd probably also clean up some other tracks using that MAL software technology.
The 2019 singles set was designed to replicate the true sound of the original singles using analog cuts of all singles, except Love Me Do which came from a digital source. (FAAB and RL were obviously digital too.) They didn’t use remixes on the singles other than using the LP mixes for the Please Please Me single. (Perhaps the single master is lost.) Besides a couple of artwork fails, that box set achieved what it was intended to do.
The single master of the Ringo “Love Me Do” has been gone since the release of the single. That’s why they used a digitized, cleaned up file from either a mint UK or mint Canadian 45.
The EP idea would've been a great idea last year, Free As A Bird, Real Love and Now and Then...with bonus track of a cleaned up version of Grow Old With Me (with George Martin's string arrangement from Lennon Anthology).
I remember before even the first Sgt. Pepper's remix release, I picked up the 1+ DVD and listened to it on my computer at the time with headphones and was blown away because of the random remixes Giles had done for some of the songs! If you check out Rain for example on that set it is a complete new stereo mix with John's vocals centered, and its different from the eventual 2022 mix when Revolver was re-released. Back in 2015 I was able to rip Rain, Free as a Bird, and Real Love from the DVD and put them on my phone to listen to. Good times. Also I think the thought process for the singles box set was to only use the original mixes for all the songs, hence most of them being mono and Come Together/Something or Let It Be for example all being the old stereo mixes, so it would be weird to have Free as a Bird and Real love utilize a modern mix when the rest are the old mixes.
I just heard about this from you. And yes, I’d love a cleaned up mix of Free As A Bird and Real Love. I’m glad we have Now And Then but these 2 songs are more fun to me. Thanks, Vinyl Geek, and happy Easter!
This would be nice: *The Beatles: Anthology Singles EP* Side A: 1. Free as a Bird (2015 remix) 2. Real Love (2015 Remix) 3. Now and Then Side B: 1. Free as a Bird (original mix) 2. Real Love (original mix) 3. Now and Then (Lennon demo)
One 12" release with the final mixes of Free as a Bird, Real Love and Now and Then on Side 1, and the three John demos (raw in terms of structure, but cleaned up sonically with MAL) on Side 2! Two bonus tracks on Side 2 could be Now and Then strings session isolated, and then a collage track of Threetles studio banter and outtakes sounds from the 90s sessions. Give us 4-5 minutes of that stuff. So 8 tracks total.
I was surprised the 2015 remixes weren't on the Blue album. I'm assuming some sort of Anthology re-release or maybe a documentary specifically centered around the making of the 3 new songs. The remixes are on the 1+ dvd but not the cd because neither made #1. Another difference on Free as a Bird is Harrison sings "what ever happened to the love that we once knew" the original used the word "life" instead of "love".
I hadn't realized that the versions on RUclips were remixes! That's neat. I LOVE "Real Love". Full agree with you; they ought to put all three on an EP!
Giles Martin didn't remix these two songs in 2015, it was Jeff Lynne. As for the 2019 singles box, I think the point was to include the original mix of each single.
What I would love to see and hope would happen would be a remaster of the anthology highlights, some of the poor sounding audio being remixed into sounding great and the bbc albums, that would be amazing to make those sound like studio albums. there’s so much songs and covers on those that were never popular that could be.
The other difference if you listen to the spotify version of real love, and compare it to the 2016 music video, the harpsichord is MUCH more vibrant and noticeable at the beginning.
As much as the David Gilmour/Roger Waters drama sucks, I am repeatedly impressed everytime I purchase a copy of a Pink Floyd LP, single, or collection on Vinyl. They are always exceptionally clean, well packaged, and simply excellent. The same cannot be said about many of the other "legacy" albums I purchase.
This reminds me of the remixes that were exclusively on the Yellow Submarine “Songbook” from… 2015 I think? It really is insane that we can’t get complete AAA audiophile box sets of The Beatles’ entire catalog, in both mono and stereo. As you said, they basically have unlimited resources. I have a funny feeling we’re going to see the Anthology box sets in the future with extra outtakes from 62-65 . Still hopeful for Rubber Soul box set. I am not surprised that they didn’t use the remixes. Plus with the singles collection I loved it but I still have to replace a few 45 that were warped. Great video! Eric!
You are quite right, considering that the SGT Pepper launch party footage was recently discovered, plus the Pete Best footage and upgraded material that was discovered since the Anthology release. Also the unused Peter Jackson Get Back material could be used.
Yes and both are downgrades, they changed all the guitar licks throughout Real Love! They also added new footage to the Real Love video, there’s some different shots including clips of George and Olivia and Paul and Linda which weren’t in the original.

The remixed Anthology songs were NOT done by Giles. That's repeated misinformation. The liner notes for 1+ state that the remix was done by... Jeff Lynne himself! That's probably why the approach taken was so different. Seriously, read the liner notes on the boxset
When I first heard the new BluRay mixes they threw me off, the addition of riffs to Real Love, and the voice at the end being "It was nice again" instead of the reverse playback that sounds like its saying "John Lennon..." and other volume changes. I compare it to Lucas messing with Star Wars, making changes for the sake of being able to. I still prefer the original versions even if John's voice sounds a little better in the new ones.
Yeah well, they need to be remixed again with this MAL technology. Now they can make John's demo vocal sound as good and strong as it does on Now & Then! So why not? Giles could also tone down some of the Lynne-drum sound on Free as a Bird too. And the singles box set should have been separate 7" for FAAB and RL...FREE AS A BIRD w/Christmas Time is Here Again, and REAL LOVE with Yellow Submarine (Spoken Word Intro/More Sound Effects Version).
The 2015 remixes aren’t surprising, since there were a lot of them done on the other recordings. It may be indicated in the 1+ box that they are remixed, but I would have to look. I wonder if this won’t open a pandora’s box of remix after remix as the AI technology improves? I’m hoping they continue with remix box sets for the remaining albums this year with Rubber Soul.
Simply because the singles box set was not a remix project. The 2015 mix of both songs should have been included in last year's 1967-1970 compilation though.
I prefer the original Real Love BECAUSE of the piano that’s attached to John’s vocal lines. I can even imagine them doing something like that intentionally.
Finally someone is talking about this. FAAB is subtle sound wise but noticeable with that change on George’s vocals. RL sound wise is good but I’m not a fan of the editing decisions.
the source of the singles box set are the andalog tapes and were meant to be historically accurate, that was the direction it went that's why the remixes of faab and rl don't fit in that box
I really think it was a missed opporunity to not release the Now And Then single as an EP instead with remixes of Free As A Bird and Real Love on one side and the song itself with Love Me Do on the other side
That’s surprising that the singles collection used the 1995/96 mixes of Free As a Bird and Real Love, considering the 2015 remixes for the 1+ CD/DVD set could’ve been used. I have this, and I think the 2015 remixes of FAAB and RL are not on the CD, only the DVD. I was able to take the DVD mixes of FAAB, RL and Eight Days a Week (which was also remixed by Giles with a straight intro rather than the fade-in one) and convert them to mp3. That seems to be the only way to get those special mixes. How sad…
Real Love has a different sounding opening...and uses different, non George Harrison approved fills. I like the beginning more, but prefer the original 95 song otherwise.
To me it sounds like they forgot to update it (the songs and the printing). I can't imagine this was an intentional thing. Maybe it was a lazy thing where they were at the end of making the collection and had ran out of gas.
I alway wonder if there’s a problem with Jeff Lynne and his implication with the Beatles. Why they don’t ask him for the finish of now and then? I have the feeling that Apple have a problem with him… I’d love a new mix done by Jeff
Jeff was George's buddy, and now that George is gone, well... And at the time, many people felt that Jeff was making the Beatles sound more like E.L.O. than they should.
@@mcarp555 When I first heard "Free as a Bird", I thought it reminded me of early 90s era Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. And it turns out that I was pretty close there: that was when Tom did a solo album and a group album with Jeff Lynne.

I tell you the thought process: Money! Why make it right the first time when they can continue to charge more money for the “new and improved” version. Obviously, the technology that Peter Jackson had for the “Get Back” film wasn’t available in 2015, but now that it is, stop jerking around the fans and give us the best product. The Beatles once stood for maximum value to their fans when it came to products. I think times have changed quite a bit since 1969.
They changed a lot in the 2015 mixes. Lyrics and solos and it’s bad! Only good part was some clean up of John’s voice - but the remixes are not the same songs to me… I would love to hear them though with MAL processed vocals
I found this out recently as well after hearing the Real Love remix on The Beatles Channel on Sirius XM. They sound so much better, these need to be released elsewhere.
Too bad they jumped the gun before artificial intelligence. There was nothing wrong with the instrumental part of the songs. The problem is with the crummy sound of Lennon's voice. Today's technology is a quantum leap ahead of 9 years ago, when it comes to separating the vocal and re-equalizing it. Now & Then almost sounds like Lennon was singing in a studio, even though the original demo quality was far inferior to the other demos. I would've loved to have had a 12" EP that had Real Love and Free As A Bird (remixed with AI), along with Now & Then on side 1, and gotten Carnival of Light on side 2.
There's no excuse for poor print quality. This isn't 1965. If you go to a restaurant that boasts "World's Greatest Hamburger!" then it better not taste like dog food. Have respect for the customers.
I received a new, sealed copy of Led Zep IV today. The cover photos look like copies of copies. Great classic, so why crap quality on the jacket? I recently got new copies of Houses of the Holy and Physical Graffiti and those are fine. Like someone else said, Pink Floyd does everything in high quality, so they all could. I've gotten shoddy packaging from the Stones before, but kind of expected that from their money making philosophy.
I am actually not a fan of the Giles Martin Remix of Real Love. Maybe because I am a big fan of the song since the 1990's so it felt.... Muddy sounding to me for the remix. Free As A Bird sounded fine. I can tell the difference but nothing bad nothing good.
It's because they know all of these "I'm the biggest Beatles fan in the world" suckers will buy anything they put out of them. Example the fake AI now and then song. Hey I got a Paul McCartney fart in a glass bottle and the bids at 7 million.😂
Money Greed Short sighted executives and poorly executed and researched item. From the style of the box to the graphics on the slip covers. It was not thought out at all. Remember when as a kid you would write your name down but run out of room because you didn’t plan it out or think about it. The Singles box. I think ,though if it was all of the stuff we wanted and none of what we didn’t ,it would cost 3x as much. That being said, great video. New info I didn’t know.
That's what i've been saying since we found out about the release of "Now and Then", it should have been released with new re-mixes using MAL on "Free as a Bird" and "Real Love" as an EP. I didn't know about the 2015 remixes until I came across an unofficial release of "Now and Then"
This would have been ideal. And they would have sold plenty of copies of this EP! They didn't need to tack Now & Then onto Blue, which is just weird. They could have done an EP of Now and Then with remixes of Free as a Bird and Real Love, and maybe a bonus track of the Now and Then strings or something, or an alternate mix of Now and Then unique to the physical EP and included the EP as a package with Blue or sold separately with different cover art, etc. Lots of options.
@@jeffreyroedel9804 yeah, idk who’s making these decisions at Apple 🍏 I also wish they didn’t partner with Disney. It was almost not going to happen to get a DVD/blu-ray release of GET BACK. I’m glad it did… but yeah, they aren’t listening to the fans sometimes.
I remembered being surprised when I heard both songs on 1+. I had to get my dad's copy of Anthology 1 & 2 to compare both versions of FAAB & RL just to make sure I wasn't imagining things.
This is insane. I was literally just yesterday thinking to myself while listening to free as a bird, “why didn’t they just go ahead and fix the vocals on the anthology singles while the were making Now And Then?” I had no clue they already remixed them. I loved the new mixes for the Red and Blue releaaes, but why weren't all tracks on there given the same treatment?
You make excellent points.
I've gotten shoddy packaging from the Stones before, but kind of expected that from their money making philosophy.
rambling explo
I am actually not a fan of the Giles Martin Remix of Real Love. Maybe because I am a big fan of the song since the 1990's so it felt.... Muddy sounding to me for the remix. Free As A Bird sounded fine. I can tell the difference but nothing bad nothing good.
It's because they know all of these "I'm the biggest Beatles fan in the world" suckers will buy anything they put out of them. Example the fake AI now and then song. Hey I got a Paul McCartney fart in a glass bottle and the bids at 7 million.😂
They should have done that when Now and Then was going to be released.
I have a redone video of Free As a Bird... with a clear vocal by John...i wish they had this on the 1967 to 1970... reissue 😮
Three OK songs but really they aren't Beatles songs.
Amo los vinilos, Saludos desde Colombia👍🙏🇨🇴
I remembered being surprised when I heard both songs on 1+. I had to get my dad's copy of Anthology 1 & 2 to compare both versions of FAAB & RL just to make sure I wasn't imagining things.
This is insane. I was literally just yesterday thinking to myself while listening to free as a bird, “why didn’t they just go ahead and fix the vocals on the anthology singles while the were making Now And Then?” I had no clue they already remixed them. They sound great but still not perfect. I’m positive they can still make it sound better with Peter Jackson’s “Mal Machine” though. Maybe one day we’ll see them revisited
I would love to see an ep of the three anthology singles.
Where about can I buy that 7“ single?
On Discogs you can buy the whole singles collection and someone might also be selling the individual single.
