Yeah, both the manga and anime didn't end it that well because the source (light novel) wasn't complete. You have to read the light novels to get answers but I don't know where to find those or a translation.
And neither the anime or the manga actually cover the full story, do they? I mean, from what I heard, the LNs even deal with the final villain and all, but here neither the anime nor the manga go that far. Heck! The manga stopped after that arc between the two friends tricked by that goblin! (which the anime skipped, btw)

I read the manga first, it was the only good looking one in the small collection of manga in the library. Found the really old anime that was just cringe, there was honestly no effort in making it look nice and decided against finishing it. This is clearly new and I’m really ecstatic to watch the rest of it when I can. I was so excited to see this in my recommended.
