The sad thing is that I expect these puppets have been long gone by now. Probably rotted away and not preserved. That is terribly tragic but this is awesome.

Ziegfeld had a fondness for girls as young as 14.
"Doris Eaton Travis (March 14, 1904 - May 11, 2010) was an American dancer, stage and film actress, dance instructor, writer, and rancher, who was the last of the acclaimed Ziegfeld girls.
She began performing onstage as a young child, and made her Broadway debut at the age of 13. A year later, in 1918, she joined the famed Ziegfeld Follies as the youngest Ziegfeld girl ever cast in the show.

I love this film, it is one of my favorite of all time. I have seen more than 50 times. I will love to live those years and have the chance to live a Ziegfeld Follies live. Love Flo and his work. Of course I love the films "The great Ziegfeld" and "Ziegfeld girl" but "Ziegfeld Follies" is my favorite and love Vincente Minelli work. It takes 2 years to make it. Thanks for post this,is a treasure💜

I looked up Bert Williams. A black man who could only work in black-face makeup due to the disgusting racism of the times.
From wiki: "Bert Williams (November 12, 1874 - March 4, 1922) was a Bahamian American entertainer, one of the pre-eminent entertainers of the Vaudeville era and one of the most popular comedians for all audiences of his time.[1] He was by far the best-selling black recording artist before 1920. In 1918, the New York Dramatic Mirror called Williams "one of the great comedians of the world."
Williams was a key figure in the development of African-American entertainment. In an age when racial inequality and stereotyping were commonplace, he became the first black American to take a lead role on the Broadway stage, and did much to push back racial barriers during his three-decade-long career. Fellow vaudevillian W. C. Fields, who appeared in productions with Williams, described him as "the funniest man I ever saw - and the saddest man I ever knew."

I wish there was some sort of identification of all the characters the puppets represent. I had to look up 'Lady Astor's pet horse' to find that it meant any snobbish hanger on to the famous. The puppets are detailed and obviously represented famous people of the time. However, they are now long forgotten. Sigh

in 1903 Ziegfeld backed his wife (Ana Held) with his first line of showgirls, a troupe of wholesome but attractive chorines called "The Anna Held Girls" (photo left). By 1907 when his Follies opened they had changed into being attractive but not wholesome, and Ana did not appear with them

Hi. I just saw your post. Wow! What a treasure to discover!!! As a fan of MGM and their musicals I always love seeing things like this, the Eleanor Powell "Fascinating Rhythm" behind the scenes film, the WOZ outtakes, Judy's "Annie Get Your Gun" footage......etc.
I'm currently reading Lela Simone's oral history. She was Arthur Freed's music department wizard.

Agreed! It's a great curio, but the William Powell opening was much better, and perfectly fitting, as he'd played Flo Ziegfeld in "The Great Ziegfeld".

I can see why they scrapped this opening and went with the William Powell opening instead. This one is sort of cute, but having "Ziegfeld" himself narrate the opening had a charm and nostalgia that the Leo the Lion opening lacked.
