Loved the podcast with a huge range of topics covered with much common sense and empathy for photography and photographers. Most amateurs struggle with composition. Gary's advice on being boring is excellent. We can't all have the 'natural eye' of another of my heroes, Jason Jones. Looking forward to the next episode.

I am in love with this vlog. I'm so glad that I got to watch this. I got my first camera when I was 8 and now at 58 I am ready to finally get back to shooting photos again because my past life has changed in a way that I have this being the one thing that I wanted to do my whole life... all of you have helped me to understand now why I so want to do this. Thanks guy's. This means the world to me.

Why do I watch videos of you guys on RUclips? For me I do it - and I have watched several for all three of you - primarily because I want to learn something from you that will help me take better photos. I have no particular need to learn about all the mechanical stuff - exposure, focus, how to get a sharp image and so on. Yes, that's all important - but it's down to me to learn all that by research and practice. No, I want to learn the stuff that is much harder and more important. I want to learn about how you see photos; how you find compositions; how you put together a composition that works well. Love the Photonerds videos - keep it up. Andrew

Very enjoyable episode. Couple of comments, motivation for me is similar to Paul's reason, in that I find it a great release from the pressure of my job and a chance to be alone with only my thoughts. In terms of reasons for subscribing, its a mixture of seeing different genres, seeing the different approaches to the same genres, viewing places I have never seen and may never see with my own eyes and for guys like yourself, there is also the feeling of normality following the three of you as you come across as down to earth and genuine individuals. Looking forward to episode 3

Why do I watch your videos? Because TV is terrible before 9pm!! For me, it is the combination of the planning, the technique, seeing the process of producing the image and abit of banter/fun. It is about learning and inspiration

Love the format of your new podcast.
Hope the sound would be better over time.
To answer your question about why we listen to your individual podcast, for my self what I most appreciate is the passion in your work that you really comunicating us.
I'ts a feelgood thing to watch someone so passionate about a craft and nature. Beside the techical teaching, you really succeed in tranmitting your feelings in action.
I think that I would like your videos even if I was't in photography.

What a fabulous question - "Why do I watch you guys on you tube?" Well for me it is a number of elements which bring that 10, 20 or 30 minutes of enjoyment and dare I say it education. New locations for me to explore, new techniques, new quirks, new ways of thinking, new ways of behaving, tricks, tips and of course the banter that comes with the vlogs. I helps me identify my boundaries and how far I could go further both technically and mentally. The content appeals to a broad audience I think - those into B Roll and drone footage, those into gear advice and reviews, those into technique, those into the methods employed in overcoming challenges and those who are looking to find new ways of working. For me ultimately, it is the escape into your world as if I am there, to see through your eyes and sharing your experiences that inspire me to want to do more, to learn more and to grow as a person and photographer. Thank you so much guys. Cannot wait for the next episode.

One of the most interesting conversations I have heard and a good insight into your reasons for doing what you do. Paul I think as spot on about how much things that are not really needed can get in the way of your objective. If your going to make a landscape photography Vlog then the photography needs to come before the video IMO. A passion for what you are doing is essential and you lot have it in spades, really enjoying these podcasts keep it up lads

Hello gentlemen, I popped on here to post a quick comment after listening to your podcast. The reasons I watch your landscape videos (as well as Heaton and many others) are numerous. First, I always gain some technical knowhow. Second, I can't always get outdoors to shoot (kids and all) so living vicariously through your journeys gives me motivation. Third, seeing the work it takes to make a great image gives me a sense of how hard I need to work to achieve the same results. Lastly, there's the photo. Seeing what it takes for you to "do what you do" gives more weight to the photo. Cheers!

Fantastic Idea chaps and I have to say I agree with Paul, as a landscape photographer my vlog felt like it was taking over the photography so at the minute its on hold so taking it back to basics really appeals! I'm sure I will be back after my Ironmans done at the end of July!! Keep up the great work!

I can say immediately why I watch certain vlogs: I do it because I want to be in the company, briefly, of someone I find engaging, likeable - who goes on a journey to make a picture. I don't care how good the pictures are if the person turns me off, as it were. The success of all three of you, IMO, and why I watch you, anyway - is based on that. Btw: I am, essentially, that guy from London who wants to get to the Lake District ! But local is good, too. Well - it has to be. A very good discussion indeed : thanks.

I'm in the US, and I watch you guys and a few other U.K. photographers because I prefer the style (for lack of a better word). Your vlogs have a more relaxed and natural vibe, which is the feeling I get when I'm out taking photos. Most of the American vloggers I've come across seem more about self-promotion and hype, with the exception of Ben Horne.

Hi, guys, I'm watching this retrospectively hummmm motivation for the first time in my 9 year photo hobby this winter I completely lost all motivation to go out and take pictures.
As I just find where I live so boring fortunately in the last couple of weeks I've been out twice and got a few keepers.
you've also mentioned the vlogs there is one vlog I keep going back to time and time again and that is one of yours Gary "5 days 36 pictures in the lake district part 1" driving around the shores of Derwentwater or should that be Thirlmere hummmm.
I find this just a stunning piece of work which makes me look even more to this summer when me and my wife hope to move to the lake district permanently the photographer's paradise
motivation will not be a problem then...

I’m passionate about landscape photography, if I have chance to sit and spend a few minutes then this is a topic I would like to watch. But it’s also about feeling a sense of engagement with the person on the screen, which you guys and the most successful channels have I think. Coupled with a sense of reality that you look more like when puffing up the mountain 😀 than Ben fogle!
And I definitely agree that the technical is overtaking the aesthetic in a lot of cases in landscapes!

Why do I follow your channel(s)? Because I like to see and learn about the locations that you are visiting. You provide information in a different way than a tourism based vlog. By "taking me along with you", it allows me to experience and/or research a location in a much different way than is possible through a "travel vlog". I may never visit some of the locations that you share, but I enjoy learning about them anyway. That's the approach I have tried to take with my own videos (for the most part).

    I watch landscape photography vloggers for 3 reasons;
    1. Location scouting for my own photography
    2. Hopefully learning something new
    3. Enjoying the personality of the vlogger I am watching
If one of those 3 isn’t present, I lose interest or won’t subscribe. Those are my reasons, but I’m sure everyone is different.

I watch YuoTube landscape VLOGs in order to learn. To learn - by viewing the experiences of others - about location planning, about mistakes made, about lessons learned, and sometimes about the locations actually visited. I find it a very valuable learning resource. It is also the chance to by in your company and experience the banter and the conversation.

Another interesting podcast. Thank you. To answer your question about reasons for watching your videos, for me it is a combination of many factors. Learning more about photography and processing is of course part of it, but I love the journey through the landscape too and learning a little about you. It is great to share your photo trips to a location, to enjoy the landscape and to hear your thought processes in creating an image, and finally to marvel at your finished masterpiece. For the times when it does not work it is informative to understand why you think it did not do so, and to sympathise with your disappointment. We have all been there on that one! Your videos on RUclips certainly encourage me to get out even more frequently with my camera ... in weather conditions that I would not otherwise have photographed in. My poor camera has seen more rain in the last 12 months than it has suffered in the last 11 years!

The sanity inherent is scaling-back the "production" aspect of vlogging is so appropriate for where my head is at. It seems too easy to copy-cat the/a formula, and get busier and busier not producing the thing that is the primary reason I am or we are out there.
I like the real world interruptions during your talk.We need to see more Mrs. Gough and the delivery people scheming to get some screen time!

In line with many other comments, I love your new Photo Nerds podcast, to pick up pointers every now and then for my photography, which is mostly landscape, architecture and macro (flowers). Regarding why watch videos of photographers on a photo outing, I love it because I too enjoy watching someone getting out for photography in beautiful country and having a good and/or challenging time on the adventure. I love heading out for hiking landscape photo outings, but my availability to do so is extremely limited, so if I can see someone having a marvelous time out and about getting photos, and explaining their photo thought processes, I really enjoy it. Thanks again for your photo outing videos and your new Photo Nerds podcasts. Well done! P.S. One thing I find fascinating with First Man Photography is the combination of travel, photo camera work and use of a drone. Fun to watch, as I am amazed that you take such time to perform drone work while concentrating on a photo shoot. That is a lot to concentrate on and plan for.

A chat about how much gear you think you can sensibly carry on landscape trips would be useful ..... That was excellent. Especially how vlogging can influence your photography negatively. I was at a point that I had 3 video cameras trying to emulate other vlogs. I ended up not going to take photos because I couldn't get my vlogs to a standard. Then I stopped vlogging for 4 months and I am really enjoying my photography again. As Paul said, I'm going back to basics.

In answer to the question, Why do I watch Photography Vlogs? Well there are many reasons. Sometimes it’s for the subject matter, ie it’s about a place I want to add to my portfolio. Sometimes it’s about the journey, from getting up out of bed, to getting that shot and feeling like we are just having a chat along the way. But one of the main reasons I watch is because of how down to earth you are. This may sound like a cliché, but I love that you are just some ordinary blokes that even take the mick out of yourselves. You are the kind of people that I would most likely click with if I met you for the first time because you are not trying to be someone you are not.
Also one of the reasons people watch you is that they have followed you on your journey in “You Tube Land”, from the humble first vlogs, where you were probably nervous as hell. To the style you have built up over the years as you have learnt the skills of vlogging, much like you probably did when you started to take up photography. We enjoy our regular viewings, and although we miss that vlog notification when we fire up You Tube, when you have other plans or family life gets in the way, we know that you will be back soon enough.
    Keep you the good work!
(and try not to worry too much about subscriber numbers).

Personally, the reason I watch you guys is for personal inspiration. Or, that's what it started off with, because when I watch you guys, or other people like Kim Grant, Thomas Heaton, Ben Horne etc etc etc, I get insights into different ways of looking at the world, and maybe I'll spot something I otherwise wouldn't've if I hadn't. That, and of course the fat I love the banter, the jokes, the explanation behind it all (even if I might not be in agreement with your thinking, or agree with the end result, it's still interesting to observe and take in) and even just the entire trip (good and bad) which makes me wish I could've been out there more than I am.

Hi guys. Great to hear your views on motivation, a subject that we all ponder occasionally. Personally, I don't mind the 04:00 alarm or the long drive to a location but maybe I'm not wired up properly ! Regarding the question you asked us, there are lots of reasons why we watch you guys, my main one being that its great viewing/entertainment. I've also learned loads from watching you guys over the last couple of years and hope to continue doing so for some time to come. Really enjoyed episode two so keep 'em coming please. P.S. It's an interesting question: Why do I (and others) like to see vlogs on photography... and what with them? I think it really depends on the viewers situation in his/hers photography: beginner, expert, lacking motiviation, looking for places to go etc. For me is it, and I guess others, but can not be sure of course, the inspration part. It can be location, but most of the time is it new ways of going out and finding good pictures. What is the photographers way of tackling lack of motivation, bad weather etc. Combined this with entertainment, funnt stuff like Pauls, Jams R Burns etc make me want to come back for the next episode.
Oooh, one more thing that I find really interesting is that one/I might find it difficult to analyze if a picture have taken is good. If a vlog/pod or whatever contains these parts is it always interesting. Finding out why a photographers picks/or discard a picture.
Keep these pods going. Love it!

Love Love Love the banter. Just one little issue, boost the volume on Gary's mic. Great topics covered and engaging conversation amongst the lads. I am subscribed to all your channels and have added this one to the mix. As to why I watch your vlogs or vlogs in particular on the subject of photography is that I get satisfaction from knowing that it's not only myself that has a difficult time getting those juicy images. The very first vlog on landscape photography I ever watched was Thomas Heaton's vlog titled "The Ugly Side of Landscape Photography". The title alone piqued my interest and I have watched many many vlogs like yours and his since. Loads of times just watching the foul weather vids has actually given me hope and motivation to get out there. Especially when I see some of the images, although they may not be portfolio shots by the vlogger's standards but, very nice images in any event. Certainly much nicer than I had been able to come up with under less than optimal weather and lighting. So, it's partially the journey but inevitably the end product that keeps me glued to the vlog. That and the little gems of wisdom that gets passed along as well.
Great job fellas, looking forward to the next instalment of Photo Nerds.

How does one make a business out of landscape photography?

I have to be honest in saying that I skip the b-roll stuff and scroll through to the footage of you chaps talking about your photography. I feel like I am one on one with you and you are talking to me about what you are doing. In many ways it feels like I know you now after watching your vids for so long. The drone footage and b-roll of your feet walking away from a camera on the floor is completely irrelevant to me. I am a photographer and subscribe to listen to you and see your images. Your Photo Nerds initiative is great but would be even better with Paul wearing his walnut whip hat😀

@@PaulGJohnsonphotography Cheers Paul; to add to my comments I would say that whilst I am an amateur photographer I do take it seriously and therefore gravitate towards those RUclips channels that focus on stills photography and where I share similar values to me. Listening to the first two Photo Nerds podcasts I got a real sense that photography is an important part of your life. I like to listen to the photographer explaining their thinking, get their insight into an image, and share some technical detail. Your last video out in the fog at Hardcastle Crag hit the mark for me. Best Wishes, Steve
