  • Are long irons hard to hit? Why?
    Are drivers easy to hit? Why
    Plus looking at some of my poor shots with an iron that would of meant lost ball with a driver.

    Interesting comments , early this year attended seniors group golf lessons, pro was advising everyone to just have irons to 5 iron and play a hybrid for the rest of the longer shots off fairway !

    • @thehairygolfer
      @thehairygolfer  24 дня назад

      Hybrids are more forgiving. They go through the rough easier. Lighter shafts = good speed. Lady Pros use then down to a 6. But I still feel you shouldn't fear golf clubs.

    That's an interesting perspective as, as someone commented, back in the day, we all had 1-irons in the bag and used them as "fairway finders". The difference is that, back in the day, 1-irons had 19° of loft, which is within a fraction of what a 4-iron in a "players" set appears to be today!!!!
    As you know, I'm a "hybrid" or, this year, a "combo iron" fan as they, for me, are so much easier to hit than long irons, yet still retain all the positives you get from irons (higher backspin, less lateral movement, better accuracy) but i get the point about if you can swing an 8-iron properly you can hit the 4-iron! It's just that, at my swingspeed, the alternatives are far easier to launch than their iron counterparts.
    As far as driver is concerned, with a ladies shaft in it, mine is 43.5 inches. That gives me more control and the softer shaft gives me more "whip" to launch the ball, and reduce sidespin. So, I may only hit it 190 yards, but it generally goes fairly straight (except when I appear on the channel!!!). So, it's my club of choice from the tee. However, I fully accept that I'm probably the exception that proves the rule!!!!!
    What an excellent, insightful video, backed up with footage demonstrating the point. More of the same please!!!

    • @thehairygolfer
      @thehairygolfer  24 дня назад +1

      As we lose speed it's harder to get the ball airborne. You can buy irons with 65gram shafts now to help. I think I will be going that way next year. Maybe this year! I agree that as you get shorter it's harder to hit the ball sideways. It's just a speed thing. See you in 3 weeks. I'll do the evens and you get the odds. You're driving! Try not to drive us in a lake......

  • @davidwalters313
    @davidwalters313 24 дня назад +1

    Good points Simon. Long irons today are far more forgiving than the long irons we had 50 years ago. A 1 iron was common in a set of clubs in those days and there was no forgiveness. Driving irons today are so easy to hit you can easily use them off the fairway.

    • @thehairygolfer
      @thehairygolfer  23 дня назад +1

      Hi David, you look at old irons and you wonder how people hit them. My Dad had a butter knife 1 iron he hit better than wooden woods. Mind you, he was taller and stronger than I. The modern driving iron has a fat sole like a hybrid. I did try an 18 deg 2 iron but I lacked a bit of talent. The 5 wood is easier for sure!

    • @davidwalters313
      @davidwalters313 23 дня назад +1

      @@thehairygolfer absolutely. I now use a lot of hybrids. Even for short irons I think they would benefit most people. For one thing they don’t have a hosel so you cant hit those devastating shanks with a PW and 9 iron!

      @@davidwalters313 David, you look at the Lady Pros who use hybrids down to 6. I can't see any reason why we shouldn't. I still persist with a 4iron though.........Cheers

    I do think a modern driver is much easier to get the ball airborne than 3-5i. Certainly easier than those first metal woods I started with in the 90s.
    However it is also easier to hit them into trouble. Which is the point you're making.
    I agree if someone is losing balls they should pick up a club where they're less likely to hit balls in trouble and bring it back towards 200 yards (could even hit a 180 club). But it could be a hybrid or a lofted fairway wood.

    • @thehairygolfer
      @thehairygolfer  24 дня назад

      Modern clubs are much better designed and better weight distribution but the further you hit it the narrower the fairway. Basically hard to lose the ball with more loft whether it's an iron or a hybrid. Those 90's clubs were difficult especially before we went to 250cc on the driver.

    I really enjoy these type of thought provoking video however my feelings are it's all about context.
    It's easier to hit a driver face than it is to hit a 3iron face. Whether it's easier to hit one in the fairway over the other is dependent on the golfer.
    Your original video made perfect sense however I did agree with the comment about high handicap golfers not using long irons. Just use a 7wood instead. I've used a ping sft 7wood for the last few years and it's so easy to use.
    2x 7 wood shots and I'm inside wedge distance on almost all par 4s. A semi sensible short game and I'm shooting around 90.

    • @thehairygolfer
      @thehairygolfer  24 дня назад +1

      I totally agree there are more forgiving clubs out there. Also with lighter shafts which can help keep our speed up. A hybrid will certainly get you better results out of the rough - you can't beat that shape and weight distribution. I've even used them out of fairway bunkers. But I still feel we shouldn't be afraid of clubs.

      @@robertcourt8593 When my Dad was playing in the early 70's the average handicap was about 18. Here we are in 2024 and the average handicap is about 18. With all the advances. Reality is the average golfer in 1974 never had lessons, never practiced outside of a couple of putts before the round and went to the 1st tee, 3 swings and go.
