Great video. I see this is 6 year old video. My husband just passed about 2 months ago. We were planning on selling our 2.3 acres with about a 100 year old home on it. I am still doing to do this. I just bought a RV 3 days ago. Class C that's a 1999. It only has 32,000 miles on it. It's in pristine condition. Does not even looked like they used it. I agree with what you were saying about not taking baths for granite or the weather, the cold.... etc etc. It's almost like (it is like) riding a motorcycle across this gorgeous country. I live in WA state. Hubby and I rode our Harleys 3 times cross country. You learn to appreciate the weather.... sleeping, ,eating.... packing... rains, hot hot sun. etc. So far from home. It was the best times of our lives. I will be changing up the couch and dinette in my Thor Chateau 1999 28ft home very soon. Already stacking up the supplies to do this. I will be 68 in August. I have arthritis issues and ankles and feet very very sort most of the time (neuropathy). CAN I DO THIS? i will make it happen!!! happy travels!!

ARE YOU KIDDING ME???! The first thing I noticed was the over 45 minute timer on the video. I asked myself what in the world are they going to talk about for 45 minutes showing somebody's rv in a video!? Bob, it felt like 5 minutes and over way too quick. What a wonderful video. I am sitting her in awe at how well it was done and all of the information shared. WELL DONE BOB! Thanks for making this one. CVK

    • @mikeh1855
      @mikeh1855 8 лет назад +5

Well, I thought; 45 minutes, OMG what are they going to talk to about for 45 minutes? Well, I thought, I can end it early and watch the ballgame..... A good video and I liked the couple and I am glad they did what they did.
Bathing.......up until the 20th century, most of mankind, except the upper class, rarely bathed (in the modern sense) at all. Somehow we managed to survive as a species. I got flooded out at my home a few years ago and had no regular "bath" for several months. I learned how to clean up without it and no one I know even noticed. So, it can be done without overtly negative consequences.
Airstream question. The wall treatments. Did you do that? Was it there when you bought it? I ask as a future Airstream owner (I don't care what it costs..........)
200 watts solar being enough. That's nice to know. I have to say, no baggies for me when it comes to the toilet. I drive it to a dump station, if I have to. Microwave, I have one at home, never use it (I mean 3 times in the last 6 years)

I love when Scott says, "Not Hippy Dippy...". Honestly, LOVE this video, I have watched at least 5 times, it really speaks to me! I have a calendar and mark off the months to my retirement sort of like an inmate. Beautiful life lessons. When I watched this 2 years ago it planted a seed and whenever I'm overwhelmed I tend to recall their words and I feel some peace. As a matter of fact, it would be great to know how they are doing...maybe an update...Yolanda and Scott are my inspiration. And Bob, I know that feeling of not seeing the moon for weeks, not feeling nature...just not feeling...you are such a joyful person. Thank you! Thank you!

    Hey Bob!
My wife and I are also Law Enforcement Officers getting to the end of our careers. She has 25 years locked in and I have 21 years locked in. We both want to do a hard 30 for 100% but we are both ready to get started on the "rest of our lives". We have five children basically "grown and gone". We still have conflicting thoughts about keeping our home and "landing pad" just in case it's a necessity with the kids. We bought a travel trailer so it would be paid off by retirement but I love your philosophy! We are ready to complete our civic duty and live life for ourselves and enjoy each other's company while we are still healthy enough to do so. Thank you for this episode. Food for thought. Look forward to eventually meeting you and the rest of the tribe out on the road! Envoy your personal freedom, brother! Getting close to joining you! Godspeed and safe travels! -Duane

Hey, there is nothing wrong with keeping your house. I’ve been fascinated by the people that do this and I’m not in this world. I have two homes one I live in once a rental property in Phoenix Arizona. I am probably the biggest negative that keeps popping in my mind when I hear people saying they sold their homes and did this is they get rid of an appreciating asset, and they buy highly depreciate assets being RVs and trailers. Now I know the airstream is holder value And look at how much they missed out on on all the appreciation of real estate in the last 10 years. Some of these people have lost hundreds of thousands or even millions of dollars. So I thought for myself I absolutely would keep my property maybe sell it and downsize though nothing wrong with that but keep a homebase. I could always rent it out when I’m gone if I was going to be gone for an extended period of time or I could make it an Airbnb, but I don’t wanna lose the appreciation of real estate to me only real estate as part of being free is American is essential component to freedom and that’s only your own property. I’m not saying you can’t be an American. You can’t be free if you don’t know my house, that’s not at all and maybe if you’ve got so much money by the time, you both retire, you cash out your house and your major appreciation you just don’t care about it any longer. I get that. But in your case, saying that there’s kids, you might want to have a homebase to come to back for Thanksgiving or Christmas special events or even in the case of a hardship. But I think you guys have a great idea. Thank you for your service.

I have watched thousands of videos on youtube - about tiny homes and van life and bicycle touring... But this is the first one of them all that truly, completely resonated with me. I am only 30 years old, but for the past 4 years have worked an extremely challenging, emotionally draining, and time constraining job. Why? Because of the money. I loved it when I first started, but unsupportive managers and continuous abuse meant that my emotional and physical health deteriorated to such an extent that I became ill. I am at a junction just now, where I have been offered the same job in a different area, and been dragging my feet about it so much. Watching this video was like a song wakening up in my soul. I was going to go back for one more year, get that extra 'security' in my savings, then go on the adventure that I'd planned for myself since I was 17 years old. But there is no such thing as security. There is only now. What was I waiting for!?!? This video, apparently.
I don't know if you are still in contact with this couple, but if you are, could you pass on my overwhelming gratitude to them.

Very interesting outlook from a couple who obviously have lived their whole life in an extreme urban society. They speak for almost everyone in the first world, except the lucky ones who get to work and live in the great rural, for example, a rancher in Wyoming who lives with the home 10 to 15 miles from the main road; managing 15 to 20 thousand acres.
I was born and raised on a wheat ranch in Northern Idaho, post depression, early WWII. We lived by having to boil water on the kitchen stove, and wondering whether I would make the 40 yard dash to the outhouse in the middle of winter. We had to move into better living conditions when I and two other members of my family were attacked by polio in the middle of harvest.
I am a retired missionary to Haiti, where we lived as simply as this Great couple. My Haitian sisters and brothers are wanting terribly to get out of their environment and to the big city, where they live in squalor.
I am very impressed that You don't dump Your grey water out in the environment.
I am in the planning stage of converting a school bus into a home, because I want to have verma-composting toilet and a recirculating grey water system.
Wish me well as I am a 75 year ole fart who thinks living on the road is way better and cheaper than assisted living. My Bride is 71. We both are in great health, so why not.

Sadly Haiti has been mistreated since it fought for its independence. A lot of it poverty has been due to the fact they were forced to pay france millions of dollars between 1825 and 1947 as compensation for the slaves' freedom. This led to them being unable to invest in their own country and people.

Paul Smith You’re so right on with your comment. I’m blessed to own and live in a beautiful, real log home on many acres and forest on three sides, with my closest neighbor being the wildlife preserve that’s three miles from my home. It’s an incredible way to live. Where one can always see the sky. And never live with the smell of city garbage and carbon monoxide. And never have to walk down the street with thousands of other people crowding around you. And be able to hear hawks and owls and see foxes and dear on your land and be one with nature. And be able to see the stars. I agree with you 💯; you and I, we are the lucky ones to have had, and still have, that in our lives. And all those who live the nomadic lifestyle, where the whole country is their backyard, are the lucky ones also👍

@@scottodom535 I posted this question to the gentleman, Bob, that interviewed you. “I wonder if they are still living this lifestyle in 2024?? Would be great to do follow ups with these folks. To see what it’s been like in the past 7 yrs since you filmed this. Pros, Cons, doing things the same or differently?? Tips for those that live this life from the couch at home.” Would you be willing to share where you are now?? I’m ready to go but my husband currently is on the fence. Hope all is well!

Ohhhh lord! This may be "It" for me!!!! I have been "on the fence" for a long long while. I especially liked hearing about NOT having to shower every single day..and the 'attendant' problems that go with that IN a trailer (i.e. the shower 'stall'area...and water getting on to other areas via spray, leaks whatever). And no....one doesn't end up dirty in any way. A good sponge bath is perfectly healthy. People all over the World do it!!!for heavens sake. And the 25 footer looks just right....Oh dear oh dear....this may be just the Nudge I've been needing. Listening to such "reasonable and good" people explain how they "do it" was terrific. Now....gotta let loose with some moohlah to get one...AND a good truck to pull her with. Wish me luck!!!

Very good video. This man gives me hope for my husband. He is in need of an awakening that life is so short and should be enjoyed, however he is holding firm to staying in the job (cage) that he has made for himself so that he can provide security for us as we age. I am the adventurous one always needing to go.... My biggest fear is that he will never see this path and will continue on his sad path until he is too old to enjoy the fruits of his labors, what will be left for him is stumbling around the house and sitting in his recliner watching sports until his death. This video gives me hope, and I will begin to lead by example. Please keep these videos coming they are very helpful.

I hope your husband can be inspired by our example- it really can be done in a sensible way that still allows for some security. I know my situation isn't like everyone's, but no matter what the situation is there is a way to make it happen- and to live your dream while you still can.
We'll keep you in our prayers!

Lori we are in the same boat... Married 36 years here. Raised 2 kids and now grandkids and love it. However I'm ready to LIVE FREE. We both love to travel, but I'm the adventurous one. We wouldn't have a Harley if I didn't give him a little push and we wouldn't have a boat if I hadn't pushed a little... Now we have our airstream, cause I gently pushed. Now as I am typing this i'm realizing that I did it before I can do it again... Slow and steady, step by step. I look at photos of him and I when we are on one of our trips in our Airstream and Hubby's smile is different, it reaches his eyes and he goofs off a little more and I see again the young man that I was so attracted to 38 years ago. He's in there somewhere. When we get home its back to business and I miss him. Don't get me wrong we are happy and love our life and home, but we don't feel that FREEDOM feeling as we do when we are in our Airstream and out somewhere exploring. Even when we take our family vacations in a condo on the beach somewhere... even tho its beautiful and amazing you still don't get that feeling that frees your soul.
Well, happy trails and good luck on your quest for what makes you both happy. :)

Well Bob, the majority of your videos tend to be practical advice and helpful, but this one I must say in my opinion has got to be the best you have ever done period when it comes to mental and spiritual side of getting out of the box and into the real world that doesn't have walls.
The one nagging question I have in this particular pair, would they really still be in that mindset if he didn't have the security of his pension. It's easy to be in that mindset when you have the financial security., just saying I am not attacking. I know when I am in a time of financial abundance it is so much easier for me to have a that positive outflow ....

All I can say is wow, lot of good stuff to think about here. What an awesome interview with an equally awesome couple. My wife and I have been on the fence for a year now on if we want to full time or not. Kind of a situation like your guests had, my wife is already convinced its the next step in life for us. We are both retired and have a truck and 5th wheel and we both enjoy camping so much. Leaving the stress of home ownership behind for periods of time seems like extra freedoms for us. But I am leery of taking that final step and selling our home, it just seems so final. Our home is a farm in a rural setting and would be very hard to reproduce again. The other side of that coin is we are slaves to the maintenance it requires to keep it looking good. This was eye opening and makes you think about what really matters in life. Well done sir.

I was impressed that she wouldn’t have changed anything. That’s a decent indication of real serenity. He’ll realize one day that what he did got him to a place now he wishes he was at long ago. In the end, all you know is what you actually lived. A different path years ago may have gotten you run over by a bus the next day. Accept that your work at one place granted your leisure elsewhere. Enjoy that. By the way, I am also a retired, three decade cop. I love my life, where I am today, where I’ve been, and where I’m going. Life is all you live, and the work gives perspective to the fun. So happy for this couple!! I love their philosophy and love of life. I totally understand their story. I just hit a wall and I could not work anymore after age 60 so I retired only 13 days before my birthday in 2021. CoVid was my “ah-ha” moment. I woke the F-up and I was determined too…I totally get what they are talking about. My husband chose to work until May of ‘22 and we hit the road pulling our trailer behind us. Change and the fear of change can cut you to the bone but with some creative financial planning, we decided to move to the coast full time in a new (to us) home. We still have the truck and trailer so we can take off whenever. I know we have never been happier with this decision. Listen to those of us who know…happiness is doable. It’s there. Grab it❤

      Thanks, RedDog!
I am amazed at how powerful fear has been as a force in my life- I always thought I was a tough guy and pretty courageous- but really so much of my life was driven by fear. It's obvious now, now that I don't live in fear any more- it's more difficult to see when it kind of is the bedrock of how you approach life- I used to think it was normal, or inevitable, or just being responsible!
Once the switch flipped in my tiny head, though, and I could see how fear was running, and ruining, my life, I felt like someone who'd awakened from a terrible dream. LIfe truly is both beautiful, and completely fatal- there's no amount of being careful and cautious that will keep you alive forever!
I feel so blessed that I eventually found the courage to live in the way I really wanted to live, and that I overcame the fear that kept me imprisoned. I hope that anyone who feels that fear can be inspired by our story and take the first tentative steps toward leaving that fear behind. We cling to fear, but it doesn't really help us or protect us at all. That is the big lie that our fear tells us, and the sooner we stop believing it the sooner we can live a life that is ruled by joy and engagement and passion instead.
      All best-
      Scott

It's a very common one, however, and even those of us who have not experienced the same thing are only a heartbeat away from something like it each moment of our lives. There truly is nothing that remains unchanging, and as long as we put our faith in these external things we will continue to be disappointed when they do what is in their nature to do, which is to change.

I love this video and this couple!! What a couple of beautiful souls. The way he said to her at the end that he loves the way she smells just melted my heart. Thanks for the great video!

I thoroughly enjoyed watching this video and meeting such a lovely and grounded couple. The more I watch your videos, and those of others like you, the more I am beginning to see this way of life as one that might be a very good fit for me when it's possible. Scott and Yolanda were such an amazing example for all of us. Thanks for sharing. Happy travels :-)

Thanks for taking the time to respond to my comment. I'm hoping that's exactly what happens.
I'm gradually making changes to my life that take me away from the treadmill of what society expects of us, and I'm moving more towards having a life that feels like it's mine and has value. I maybe a few years away from achieving my total dream life but I'm inspired to push forwards by people like you and Yolanda.
By the way, I now write and self-publish children's mystery books and my second book was entitled Yodelling Yolanda.
Again, thanks for sharing your story, and I love your Airstream!
      Take care, Jonathan

      Jonathan-
I have no doubt that you will do it! It is possible, and understanding where you want to do and then taking concrete steps towards that goal is exactly how you do it. I'm excited for you and for all of us who will benefit from your success.
And I'm now busy trying to get Yolanda to yodel!
      Wishing you all the best!

My dream is to live and travel around New Zealand in an Airstream 310, writing my books and visiting schools, libraries and bookshops. I recently watched The Secret, about the law of attraction, so I'm busy manifesting the life I want. Good luck with your own yodelling Yolanda. :-)

Our biggest obstacles in life is ourselves. This couple has inspired me to get the hell out of my own way...to begin living life. Thank You.

      Steven-
You said it! It isn't really the case that other people are standing in our way- it's almost always just ourselves! Once you've figured that out, you really become unstoppable.
It's wonderful to hear that our story inspires you to take action in your own life! I have no doubt you'll experience an amazing outcome that will bring you incredible connection and happiness! Best of luck!
