I always wondered why it’s called Old Winchester Hill when it’s not near Winchester. I believe the Win may mean white in old English. The barrows are rumoured to have been originally covered by exposed chalk, making them gleam white in the sunshine for miles around. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if they could be restored to the way they were?
Thanks , really enjoyed your talk !
