Jeff I'm a new subscriber to your channel. I'm new at wood carving more specific at making spoons. I appreciate your videos and wood like to share ideas and spoons with you.
Exactly what I’m looking for! Legend! My project started as my first hand carved bowl which went really well! But I wasn’t happy with the inside, felt like I was leaving a lot of ma I couldn’t get with the adze or chisels. so I’m lathe turned on the inside and hand carved on the outside to show a nice scalloped knife finish. Keep it up!!
That was beautiful to watch. I just carved my first spoon and I'm looking forward for the next ones. Kuksas also in the list. You're a great inspiration.
just ordered the Mora 106 just getting into spoon carving, also ordered the deepwoods large spoon knife, very eager to try them both.on the wait list for the nic westermann 50mm twca cam and 50mm swan gouge.that has been my hardest challenge is the bowl of the spoon.have been using a dremel but after hand carving everything else just seems wrong to use a power tool..thanks for all the vids.you among others have been great mentors.
That was such a nice video to watch, so satisfying. The wood looks really waxy, and your knives are obviously super sharp to cut it so easy. You've obviously had much practise, keep up the good work :)
Wouhaou ! I think that your best (picture) video ! Nice picture, nice color, nice time and really nice spoon ! Thank's ! :) Stéphane (Switzerland), Sorry for my english.
+Thunder Coyote The drawknife is a friend of mine, Woodsmans Finest. Look him up! I already did make a video on sharpening tools! I have new methods now though.
Dude, that's an amazing video, not just woodwork-wise but all together. So mesmerizing, I really enjoyed watching it. And that knife is so sharp, how did you manage to make it so?
Take note of the thickness of the spoon. It's thin enough that once it's finish carved green it will dry without cracking! A bit of green woodworking seems to be about finding the right dimensions to have it all dry correctly
Man, that wood and that knife cut like an absolute dream. Great video thanks.
Definitely my favourite spoon carving video!
Very nicely done Jeff!

Hey jeff what kind of drawknife are you using and maybe you can do a video on how you sharpen your tools
+Thunder Coyote The drawknife is a friend of mine, Woodsmans Finest. Look him up! I already did make a video on sharpening tools! I have new methods now though.
Really miss your vids Jeff
lol I'm sorry... weve had 2 kids since I made most of these.. no sleep... no time.. I would be so crusty in videos if I did any talking right now !
Great video!!
+Les Dyer Thanks Les!
Great work Jeff! That knife must be incredibly sharp, it looked like you were carving cheese.
+Brian Larson Haha, carving cheese would be much easier!
Birch wood is incredibly easy.
Dude, that's an amazing video, not just woodwork-wise but all together. So mesmerizing, I really enjoyed watching it.
And that knife is so sharp, how did you manage to make it so?
+SlingThor You can see my Tormek style sharpener in the video.. the slow turning strop with polishing compound helps keep the knife sharp!
great video Jeff, I like how you've filmed this. :)
+graphiccontent98 Thanks! I appreciate the kind words
The bowl is skew. _All_ of them!
You have left all those tool marks. What tradition are you following?
Sweet video. -34C with the W/C in Greater Sudbury this am!
great video Jeff! How does birch or more specifically grey birch work for spoons?
I'm not sure if I've carved grey birch, yellow birch is a no-no basically unless your a gluten for punishment lol
Great video can you tell me how long it takes too make a spoon start to finish thanks
+5quint1 about 40 - 45 minutes at the moment. You can of course spend much more time, but for the spoon I make, thats how long it takes!
Very nice video, Jeff. When you go from a green birch log to a finished spoon how do you avoid checking? Do you work in stages?
Take note of the thickness of the spoon. It's thin enough that once it's finish carved green it will dry without cracking! A bit of green woodworking seems to be about finding the right dimensions to have it all dry correctly
+Jeff Ballantyne (Lotsofwoods) Thanks.
Very nice video! What kind of axe do you use?
+Emory Smith Its an axe my friend Max from Woodsmans Finest made for me. Look him up!
Jeff Ballantyne Will do!
Well done on the video man
+Adirondack Wilderness Co Thanks man!
and how long did it take you to make that spoon it awesome!?
Well longer because I filmed the whole thing, but generally 40-50 mins
Really beautiful video! What kind of knife and scorp are you using?
I literally put it in the video to save people from asking lol. Watch it again
doh! sorry, i was watching it on my phone. didn't notice it then. thanks again. are you ever going to periscope?
What is the tool you used to hold the spoon called
+CTFitness its a spoon mule. You can find a video of Jarrod Dahl using one
Good job
