I'm 62 and neglected my abs for years even though I worked out. So I stopped eating sweets and started working on my abs . It took months but I had finally got my 6 pack back and I'm never going to lose it again. I lost 35 pounds and now I'm 5'10 170 . Talk about feeling better and being able to move a lot easier. And I never counted calories in my life.
Did the same. I’m 58 and went from a soft 194 to my late 20s/early 30s 160! Changed diet, walk and exercise daily. Intermittent fast and watch carbs. It’s worked for me but i eat moderately things that I like- but don’t over do it
In 8 months, I personally lost 30 kg of weight without losing any muscle and strength. Losing fat is incredibly easy if you know what your doing. When I lose fat, my diet is high protein, high fat and very low carb. This worked great for me. I do strength and lactic acid training, and I also do cardio 2x a week (1x HIIT and 1x steady state). If there is one advice I can give to anyone struggling to lose fat, then it is to AVOID CARBS! This keeps insulin low and improves insulin sensitivity. Eat high protein and healthy fats, especially MCTs. It is also important to include a high-carb day 1x a week to keep your energy and metabolism high and replenish depleted glycogen stores during a low carb diet. This is in my opinion the best and fastest way to lose fat without losing any muscle and strength.
GREAT VIDEO. Tracking is helpful tool, but in my experience, is too stressful because I would over think and waste so much time weighing and measuring. I follow basic guidelines and adjust nutrients based on my energy output. Whole foods as much as possible..AND... I quit drinking alcohol-- that was a game changer. Now I need to kick my chewing gum habit... it's a waste of carbs and calories. I function optimally on lean protein, cooked low glycemic veggies and small to moderate amounts of whole food carbs (berries, yams). I keep my carbs around my training schedule. Feels so intuitive now, and I love ,my food. Keep up the great work!

Brian, thank you for doing what you do. I've been on a binge on your content and it's been making me excited about wanting to try strongman training. You've put how you eat and the way you think in such an eloquent manner that I feel it click for me. Thanks for doing what you do brother.

This approach literally got me to under 10% bf effortlessly. It shines when coupled with lots of physical labour and walking along the day. I was eating out everyday too. I think its even advantageous compared to counting calories in a way because when you eat more freely but with conscience its better for like, not underfeeding. Better feeding during a cut will spare some muscle mass. Cutting down to a lean physique really is not that much of a 7 head hydra. imo 10% or less and.. thats when you are gonna suffer. we are too accostumed to see bodybuilders dieting counting every grain of rice but they dont want to just look ripped. They want their whole skin to look vacuum seeled dry no water no fat no anything. And the suffering really is the most intense about 6 weeks out from a show and on. There is this bodybuilder from Brazil, Felipe Moraes, the best conditioned person I have ever seen, look him up. Untill 6 weeks out from the bodybuilding show he was eating tons of bread with cream cheese, hams, loin and lots of carbs. Basically cleaning up the physique is straightfoward, getting dickskin skin is the big boy game. Dont be afraid to trust informed intuition
Glad you're doing well. I'm gonna do another bulk soon but yeah I also don't like counting calories, basically gonna do this when I finally cut...if I'm ever satisfied with my size.
It's actually amazing how auto-regulating your body can be if you have enough muscle mass to drive metabolism. Think part of the problem is (often) a lack of resistance training in people trying to lose body fat and (perhaps even more often) a complete lack of knowledge of just how much food (and quality of food matters) a person needs to consume just for maintenance. Western culture encourages overindulgence and poor food quality choices. Or maybe I should say corporate advertising encourages overindulgence and poor food quality choice.

That said, I think there is value in abstaining from sweet, if only just to not be weak to the taste, if that makes sense. Cuz the flip side is, let's say you decide to subvert sugar with artificial sweeteners but now the sweet taste still has control over you and you have to rely on buying those sweeteners which are usually more expensive than sugar just to get the feeling. When I got super dialed in back in 2016. I followed this approach and I got really ripped and strong but I was so uneducated in terms of macros so after that I learned how to track. It’s less stressful when you’re not counting calories and now it’s neurotic that I track calories it’s a bad habit lol
The conscious/sub conscious eating is very important, it's too easy, especially when someone is busy to just fill up on whatever is convenient instead of making good food choices
I suggest doing what ever it takes till you find out what it “feels” like….once you feel the changes happening ….that’s it …verify it’s real….than do what makes you feel that way most of the time…make it habitual along the way and you really win
I disagree on the its not that hard line. When you have lived your life a certain way, primarily eating, drinking etc. changing that is difficult. You have to buy in to it and persevere for months to where you have a new lifestyle from what you eat, and when, amount you eat, where you go or hang out depending on the strength of your will power. No simple feat. Good video though.
What did you change once you felt like you were comfortable with your weight loss? I've lost 30lbs without tracking the last several months. I am almost to my goal and I am wondering how to I hold my weight where it is? I feel like if I just keep eating the same amount my metabolic rate won't recover because it has lowered to match my new body weight and lower calories.
I needed this, lost 70lbs a few years ago on a typical bodybuilder diet but over the last couple of years, regained 30lbs of it as it wasn't sustainable. Mr Alsruhe, would you ever consider doing an over 50's program (AKA, the broken meat-head program) as I like all your programs but feel they are for 30 year old studs and not 54 year old's with broken bodies. Thank you for all the content, really helpful in getting to a 485lbs deadlift following your how too's.
I’m very much considering doing something like this and I think one of the next programs that I’m going to release is going to be my basic linear and I am going to make it as simple as possible. But I also kind of want to make a program for aging lifters that doesn’t do a whole lot of the traditional lifts and focuses more on things that make your body feel good versus making your 1 rep maximum go up
@@BrianAlsruheOfficial Thank you for your reply. If you did this, I would 100% get it. Currently flip flopping between bodybuilding, strongman and powerlifting, sometimes in the same session and desperately looking for a solid program to follow.
@@BrianAlsruheOfficial Brian I agree with Ban Dog here. I'm right there with him. I've purchased programs from you in the past, but after a few muscle tears, I'm done with SM. I'd INSTANTLY purchase a broken meat head and a bare bones linear program. I feel like shit and am tired of going back and forth between 531, candito, conjugate. I'm fat and old. Help!!! Lol love ya bro.
I second Ban Dog's motion that one develop an over-50 program ("AKA, the broken meat-head program"). At 51, I'm discovering that repeating the same movement patterns over and over again are bad for the muscles around my hips. I had to dispense with sumo deadlifts and squats at only parallel depth while incorporating cossack squats and butt-to-grass dual- and single-leg squats to develop better all-around hips strength. By the way, great timing on this video. I feel the pounds adding up as we go through autumn. I need to be more mindful about what goes into my stomach. As always, thanks for the superb content.
I have been thinking a lot about this lately because my training is starting to move more towards things that make my body feel good rather than make my one rep maximums go up. Let me think about this but I really love the suggestion brother, thank you for it!
Mark wasn't talking about 10 minute walks for the sake of movement, it was in regards to going for a walk after each meal because it has a good list of benefits for doing such
Did I imply that it was only for the sake of movement? That wasn’t my intention if that is how it came across. I was just simply referencing how he started a lot of people on doing a 10 minute walk a day.
I do it just to keep my fat content up because I don’t eat a ton of carbs. But I have heard that it has similar effects to taking ibuprofen for pain and inflammation. But you would have to do research on that to tell for sure because it’s been years since I have read about it
I went keto for health reasons and lost weight as a consequence (unintentionally). However, I'm now far more comfortable at around 10-12% bodyfat than I ever was at 20% or more, and, lb for lb, I'm about as strong now as I was pre weight loss. I've never counted calories/macros, just eaten 2 large wholefood, nutrient dense meals per day.........
When eating are you multitasking or are you just sitting, eating, and nothing else? I have read things that just sitting and eating instead of working on the computer is more beneficial for health and weight management, based on your nervous system or something.
Relished your easy, relaxed style in this informative video aligned with hard hitting results from simplicity and efficient time mgmt. Your "simple" eating plan echoes the observation of philosopher savant Ralph Waldo Emerson, "...common sense is genius dressed up in its working clothes." PS. In terms of energy plans for active lifestyles, seems hard to maximize performance in working out without carbs. Runners, cyclists etc need carbs it seems and for heightened performance during day. "Burn fat through the fuel of carbohydrates." Dr. Robert Haas, sports advisor to world class athletes Above all, maybe its just moderation, logic, and common sense are the keys as the early Greek philosophers highlighted. The truth shall set us all free.
ill count calories for a week or two just to double check my portion sizes. you can still overeat healthy foods. So ill do this a couple times a year, especially if im struggling, to make sure im not overeating because my biggest struggle isnt eating healthy, its eating too big of portion sizes.
You should break down the stack and provide your invaluable experience to the ped conversation since ppl are going to take it anyways esp when they see a guy your age w/ the size and strength that you have

It’s less stressful when you’re not counting calories and now it’s neurotic that I track calories it’s a bad habit lol
"if it has a face i can eat it" i knew potato smileys were the secret
I can’t say you’re wrong
Agreed whole foods are best. i like my food to had a face, is/sustain a baby, or come from the ground.
I would agree with you my friend
The conscious/sub conscious eating is very important, it's too easy, especially when someone is busy to just fill up on whatever is convenient instead of making good food choices
I definitely agree
Thanks brian
Genuinely always great information for just about everyone out there
Just a great teacher
This means a lot to me, thank you so much for seeing it my friend
I DONT DRINK OR SMOKE FOR OVER 20 YEARS NOW,WORKOUT EVERYDAY,I DO LOSE WEIGHT ,BUT THE BELLY IS ALWAYS THERE,HAVE A 6 PACK,BUT UNDER LAYER
"relatively lean" lol. Well done Brian.
Thank you my friend
I think I have that exact same flannel shirt as you, now I’m gonna feel extra jacked whenever I wear it haha
Flannel shirts unite!
I suggest doing what ever it takes till you find out what it “feels” like….once you feel the changes happening ….that’s it …verify it’s real….than do what makes you feel that way most of the time…make it habitual along the way and you really win
I definitely agree Randy
I disagree on the its not that hard line. When you have lived your life a certain way, primarily eating, drinking etc. changing that is difficult. You have to buy in to it and persevere for months to where you have a new lifestyle from what you eat, and when, amount you eat, where you go or hang out depending on the strength of your will power. No simple feat. Good video though.
Brian has good taste in axes.
Good attention to detail my friend!
I hope you aren't throwing out multiple times a day mate
I am down to 1 to 3 times a day
Thanks Brian, I needed this 😘
Thank you for watching it!
Great video bro. Keep the great content coming 💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽
@@bandog2250 same story here!!!
Great stuff as usual, brother. So basically, use common sense.
Wow this guy looks good.
You natty?
Brian, I know you are an adult and don't need to be told what to do, but stop eating the toothpaste! 😛
Haha
Enjoying the content! Any chance of getting the beef jerky recipe Sir?
I’m really thinking about making a video about my top five
@@BrianAlsruheOfficial Along those lines, your stretching video a few weeks ago resonated with me, too! Thanks for all the tips over the years.
Good video I don’t like counting calories either
It’s just not my thing, it can definitely be useful but I would rather spend my energy and attention on other things
Was actually Stan Efferding's original idea, and from there other youtube sensations have claimed it as they're thing.
Saw someone share this on TN the other day and had to watch. Some great simple advise. Quality
2 fish oils pills every 3 hrs. Never heard of this b4. What's the benifit of that or why did u do this?
I do it just to keep my fat content up because I don’t eat a ton of carbs. But I have heard that it has similar effects to taking ibuprofen for pain and inflammation. But you would have to do research on that to tell for sure because it’s been years since I have read about it
That makes sense. I'll look into it. Thank you for the reply and being a awesome human! Catch ya on the next one
Your "simple" eating plan echoes the observation of philosopher savant Ralph Waldo Emerson, "...common sense is genius dressed up in its working clothes."
PS. In terms of energy plans for active lifestyles, seems hard to maximize performance in working out without carbs. Runners, cyclists etc need carbs it seems and for heightened performance during day.
"Burn fat through the fuel of carbohydrates." Dr. Robert Haas, sports advisor to world class athletes
Above all, maybe its just moderation, logic, and common sense are the keys as the early Greek philosophers highlighted.
The truth shall set us all free.
Only Science we need... Humans are omnivores.... we would thriving in a healthier world if all processed sugars were eliminated...
Brian I subbed on the strength of the sheer testosterone jumping thrumy screen I said, "this is my channel".💪🏿💪🏿
ill count calories for a week or two just to double check my portion sizes. you can still overeat healthy foods. So ill do this a couple times a year, especially if im struggling, to make sure im not overeating because my biggest struggle isnt eating healthy, its eating too big of portion sizes.
👍
Thank you my friend!
You should break down the stack and provide your invaluable experience to the ped conversation since ppl are going to take it anyways esp when they see a guy your age w/ the size and strength that you have
I counted calories and achieved but just can't stick to doing it again - staying same low weight now doing all you said before listening to you actually.
Toothpaste has calories!?!?!?!?!?!!
Damn it!!!!!
Awesome stuff. I do a lot of those but never consistently. Gonna save this video for the next time I cut back after the holidays.
Can you do a book list of like 10 to 25 top books you recommend
I thought about this but not one of them would be a lifting related book and I’m not sure if that is what my viewers would want to see. But I can talk about books all day
@@BrianAlsruheOfficial do an Instagram post about it
@@BrianAlsruheOfficial i personally would love it. I love to read but not about lifting. More about history some self help like "the gift of fear" and and other things. but a list of good books to read in a cozy place or tent would be awesome i think
Once you learn how much you need you don’t need to measure it anymore.
you looks so less strong you was jacked at 255 can you still use same weigh
Your approach is pretty much the same as what I've gravitated towards during my life.
That wall makes an awesome backdrop.
Secret: milk and dbol
what about natural stevia?
Thank you for your input !
Thanks as always big man ! Moderation is key. (most of the time :) )
Well said!
