      That's how I felt when the Bills won a playoff game in 2020. Last time they did that I was 4. It's such a great feeling, isn't it?

      I’ll be 60 this year! Did I cry? Oh heck yeah! This year is a different team than it was 32 years ago. In the 91-92 season, the Lions went 12-4. However that year, the Lions kept winning. It was more like they didn’t play great, but they would just be enough to pull out the game. So that feeling that we have this year just had that missing element in 92. Partly the reason was the first game of the season, as they played the Washington Redskins, who ended up winning the Super Bowl! Well, to be blunt, they got annihilated in the first game, something like 48-3. Well when they beat Dallasvthat year, exciting as it was, everybody knew that they were going to lose in the NFC championship game to Washington. We were hoping they were a better team as a season moved along, because of the record, but everybody knew, they didn’t stand a chance to beat the Washington Redskins, and they got beat. I believe it was 45-10 or something like that. The 2023-24 Detroit Lions are better! So much better! In fact, after Sunday nights game, we have reason to hope! It in fact could legitimately be a team that gets to the Super Bowl! And I never thought I would say the Detroit Lions and the Super Bowl in the same sentence! So, the optimism is sky high this year! So let’s enjoy the ride, because if it is another 32 years until they win another playoff game, I’ll be 91 years old! And I’m not sure where I’ll be at that point. Anyway, it’s exciting, and I am full of optimism, as the Lions try to roar to the Super Bowl this year! Go Honolulu Blue and Silver!! This entire state is behind you and loves you!

    So, the Goff (Lions QB, former Rams) trade with Detroit for the Rams current QB, Matt Stafford is why this game was so intense. Our former 12 year gunslinger of a QB, went to the Rams and won a Super Bowl. But since the trade 3 years ago the Lions with Goff and Dan Campbell(our 3rd year coach) Brad Homes (our 3rd year GM) they have rebuilt this team and made them a contender. You see, the trade was "Rams get Stafford, Lions get Jared Goff plus 2 first round picks some 2nds and 3rds round picks as well" and our GM made great use of those picks. Lots of trading, moving up and back in the draft with those picks to get a lot of great players. A lot of the teams strength is their 1st-3rd year players who are starting for the team and making an impact. So the Stafford/Goff trade is looking like a win/win for both teams. Rams won a Super Bowl that very next year, and the Lions won a division and a playoff game within 3 years of that trade.
    90 years a football team this year, and that was only their 7th(or 8th?) playoff win ever. They had a championship in their league(1957 league champions) before the merger that created the super bowl era. In the Super Bowl era?! Few playoff win and no Super Bowl appearances, let alone wins. Haven't even been to the NFC championship game. So yeah, been a long time, and first home playoff game since they built that Stadium 23 or so years ago. Also, next week will be another home game against the 4th seed Bucs or 5th seed Eagles based on their game tonight! Cheers, and TY for the reaction! Go Lions!!!

      People forget, or never knew (it _was_ a _long_ time ago) that Detroit was a power in the 50's. They had multiple championships. But all of that was before the Super Bowl era. Since the institution of the Super Bowl they had won exactly _ONE_ play-off game. So not only was this the first playoff victory in 32 years, it was also only the second _ever_ .

    Goff was a #1 overall pick in the draft after a record-breakng career at the U.. of California. He had a good career with the Rams including a losing appearance in a Super Bowl which was analylized ad nauseum afterwards as being caused by Goff's inadequate QB play. Goff just doesn't look like an athlete with a huge ego who can let outside criticism just slide off his back. He took the blame for the loss really hard and it affected his QB play in the following season, which, in turn, brought more criticism and increased the impression that the Rams would never win the SupwerBowl despite an impressive roster of star players if Goff remained the QB.
    Matthew Stafford was also a #1 overall pick by the Lions and will probably end his career with more passing yards than any QB other than Tom Brady. But he never really won anything in Detroit (the Lions never focused on building an O-Line for him) and critics pointed to the lack of winning as a knock on his overall ability, calling him "Stat Padford", implying he racked up those passing yards in games where the Lions were hopelessly behind against prevent defenses willing to give up some yardage. Stafford did not want to finish his career without every playing in a Super Bowl, so he asked to be traded.
    The Rams were astounded that the second greatest passing machine in NFL history had just become available to them to solve their QB problem, so they put together an irresistable offer for Stafford, which included Goff as sort of a throw in due to Goff's huge contract. They had to free up money to pay Stafford. Goff by then was considered a head case with a career stuck in a bad downward spiral.
    The Lions coaches haven't gotten enough praise and credit for getting Goff's head screwed on correctly once again. This game against the Rams had the dual extra attractions of Stafford maybe destroying the dreams of the fans in Detorit for whom he had valiantly played without much success for 12 years, and Goff getting the chance to put it to the coach and organizization that had given up on him and shipped him to the NFL equivalent of Siberia.

    I had tickets to this game. The stadium was nuts, it was so loud in that building. Thats why the Rams had 1 Timeout left with 8 to go in the 4th quarter. The crowd caused two timeouts to be called because the Rams couldn't communicate the plays. 13:14 Lions fans have been waiting for this type of season! I'm going to be at next weeks games as well :D

    A few years ago the Lions traded their star QB (Stafford, the now Rams QB) for the Rams QB (Goff) and a bunch of early-round draft picks for the upcoming years. Stafford won the Super Bowl for the Rams the following year, and Goff has been a better player since coming to Detroit plus those draft picks have really helped in building a playoff team.
    So I think the trade worked out for both teams, Rams sold their future to win immediately and did so, whereas a bad Lions team at the time got a younger QB plus a ton of draft picks that are now starting to pay off for them.

  • @plaid11
    @plaid11 5 месяцев назад +2

    Yeah, it’s been a long time coming for Detroit. They should have won one a few years back but the refs decided the Cowboys needed that win. The thing you realized was that Goff played for the Rams. What you didn’t realize is that in 2021, Stafford got traded to the Rams for Goff and a couple first round picks. Stafford played for the Lions for 12 years and most consider him the greatest Lions QB ever. The Rams went all in to win a championship and they did the first year with Stafford. The Lions officially started their rebuild after recently fired head coach Matt Patricia and GM Bob Quinn made a laughing stock of the Lions roster. Also the receiver, Josh Reynolds, Goff was throwing to on that first drive also played for the Rams when Goff was there.

    1:08- You said that the Lions are bad in the playoffs, and that's not necessarily true. It's just that we rarely even get there enough to find out. We've only ever been 13 times since 1957, and it had been 31 years since our last playoff win.
    3:33- Yes, Goff (Lions QB) took the Rams to SB LIII where they played against Brady and the Pats. Unsurprisingly, they lost. He was traded to Detroit for Stafford (the Rams QB he beat in this game) the next season. Since, the Lions have been rebuilding and Stafford won his first ring in SB LVI (which was actually held in the Rams home stadium--the second straight year where the typically neutral site SB was held at a participating team's home stadium, and the home team won both times--Brady and in the Bucs in LV, then Stafford and the Rams in LVI.)
    Up next for the Lions: Tampa @ home again (thanks again, Packers ;).)

    See the lions were a powerhouse in the 50s, and won NFC championships. However this was pre-Super Bowl, and in 1991-1992 season the lions was a playoff game(then kinda went under the radar till last season). Context. The Lion's weren't just bad in the playoffs. They were bad period. They had 0-16 seasons, had not won a divisional championship in THREE DECADES. This is all very special. Also, the Goff / Stafford trade was..interesting. The Rams treated Goff terribly, and I think there was some abusive words exchanged. So Goff comes to the Lions, and Stafford goes to the Rams after what..12 years with the Lions and NO Superbowl.
    That very next season that Stafford was traded to the Rams, the Rams win the Superbowl. SoOoo...Haha.
