"Makes me sound like I know what I´m doing, what we all need help with!" love it
An amazing human being and world class producer. Waves has done it again. Any of the Greg Wells plug-ins are incredible and still sound better than most of the newer plug-ins that have come out in recent years. They are just so lush and musical. Bravo !
I'm glad to see people not be shy about their talent and share it with others
Love seeing the people behind my favourite MIKA songs
Vessel. My favorite album of all time produced by this lad.
that's why i clicked this haha, recognised him from the studio tour
Exactly why I’m watching this video!
He killed it with vessel!
Haha. Says Greg while sitting in front of a few racks of insane outboard gear (Retro Compressors, Shadow Hills Mastering Compressor, Urei 1176, a pair of Distressors, Neve Portico Channel, API 550A's, 550B's, and 560's, 2 Pultecs, etc...). Ooonly kidding.... Sort of ;) I DO LOVE Greg and his fantastic approach to making records as well as his kind nature of sharing his knowledge with those who are eager to learn. Greg's a top class HUMAN and Musician/Producer/Engineer/Mixer, etc... who I have nothing but the utmost respect for. Cheers.
LOL!! I did notice that too. funny
+Pete Woj
yea greg is an amazing human i love this guy.
Where is his studio???
Please
Just remember, a lot of that stuff was purchased before these plugins were ever released. I've worked in several studios and I see these plugins and their real life physical components in the same room. Some guys just want their gear around even if they aren't using it as much anymore or at all. I can't even imagine how much some of that gear would cost now. That's the one thing that never changes in price.
"I like to hear things sounding pretty mix-y" classic!
Greg and Mika's collaboration was one of the best !
Greg you are so humble, it's rare. Keep up with the great work
The Greg Wells vocal plugin has changed my world. Thank you Greg & Waves 👍🇬🇧
I couldn't agree more...I was given the Waves Diamond Bundle a few years ago and having used maybe a 1/3 of the wealth of plug-ins it offers. I felt like I was pushed into a pool of greatness. Now I just acquired and am working out of another nearby studio that has ALL of the signature plug-in bundles (JJP, CLA, Maserati, Kramer, Diamond, Mercury) and it's A-Mazing. This is a great interview...
greg is truly a top-notch gent.
of course....and all hardware in the room is just for furnishings....ahahhhah
Or, you know. For recording.
its nothing that sounds like hardware software sounds close but are not the same
i like flashing lights ;-)
Maybe he bought the hardware first. lol
But honestly as convenient and well engineered as some plug ins are (if the person knows what they are doing), artists, and more importantly labels and industry check writing types won't take you seriously until they see some flashing lights as ADRIAN WAGNER puts it.
because the knobs are more fun :)
Multiband comp on the whole mix, great to hear him backing this up!!!
valuable for the insights into how a successful producer thinks. I'm an independent songwriter and producer - I record, mix and master everything myself (and love doing it). you can never stop learning, glad I watched this
such a humble, amazing dude
What an amazing human being doing what he loves, my deep respect for mr Greg!!!!!
Great Tom Hanks interview!!!
what a cool guy
I'm a fan of the H-Delay too - if you want to try something similar, the Slate D16 Repeater is nutty. Very versatile and can sound very analog - lots of modes to get the right vibe.
Wow, impressive! Thanks for your humble advice Greg!
I have all of these plugins and I can confirm that they are all quite bad ass. Other great plugins you guys should explore are the great mastering plugins such as the L3-16 Multimaximizer as well as the iZotope Ozone 6 plugin. Once you have your fat mix, these guys will take it to the next level (once you've practiced with them).
For limiting and compressing, Slate FGX > Ozone
well friends, this is an ad. so why complain? but Mr Wells is an absolutly impressing man.
I love the other Greg plugin... Egocentric I think is called. Great stuff.
Mix egocentric actually I used today A little touch in the mix bus
Cant go wrong with Waves kids!
Great video - massively informative and some great anecdotes too! Respect.
what's the plugin thats used in his voice 1:01 ?
MERCY bitcrusher 😃
😂
Sounds more like a vocoder
not trying to troll here, I love waves plugins. just kind of curious to see if anyone had a similar thought about the linear multiband Mika story. I was thinking about the part where he talks about Mika jumping up and saying "now it sounds like a record". I noticed on the multi electro mastering setting that the gain of each band is cranked up about 2.4 dB. I wonder if really his reaction had to do with the gain increase more than what the plugin is actually doing. I am working on a track right now and had the pro MB on my mix bus (set to low-mid cleanup preset, so not much gain increase on anything). I swapped it out for the waves linear multiband and set it to multi electro and I was like "oh man that sounds better" but then i realized actually maybe it didn't actually sound better, just louder. In fact the lower half of the spectrum was too hot and muddled. Im not trying to say fabfilter is better, I was mixing my track into it so if I had started with the waves instead Im sure I would have mixed into it more properly. Not even really sure what Im trying to say here haha, but I'm trying to learn to mix and master and I am currently thinking about loudness a whole bunch and trying to figure out how to tackle the issue of plugins making a sound better vs louder. Just thinking out loud. I mean, why does that multi electro preset have the gain cranked up so much in the first place? Why not just keep the gain at 0? Was it just cranked up in hopes that people would like the preset more?
zeric Waves tends to do that to win customers over, All their plugins are louder in terms of volume, I feel the same way about their cla2a 3a and 1176. On the other hand their plugins in general are top notch.
zeric...give me Soundtoys 5 all day long. For creative fx at least. And h8m saying “This compressor is so musical”! Eh?
The reason the multiband might make your music sound better is because the compresor can even out the spectrum balance in your music, as you already pointed out its not about loudness, loude want make your mix better. So learn more about spectrum balance if you want to be a great mixer, ask question like do i have to much too much subbas? is it too sharp?
In my opinion the mika story is most likely a pure coincidence, that the audio material fit well with the preset setting.
Louder fools your ears.
NOW THAT SOUNDS LIKE A RECORD!
One of my heroes! Great guy too!
what is all that hardware in the back... does he use hardware to mix
Thanks for this wonderful advice.
Awesome video - I'd like to see more videos with Mr. Wells. Maybe even a live mixing session.
I guess I know what I’m doing every plug-in he uses, I use the same.
Inspiring...now I do not regret being heavily reliant on Waves plugins!
One and only is one of my favorite songs all time. Are you kidding me? lol
What did you go and do
Pat yourself on the back for 20 min.
Prfff, Greg haven't heard about Soundgoodizer... 😅
Mika, Rufus, Not Like the Movies...Jesus 😍
Anybody here like the Solid Bus Comp from native instruments?
Yeah, it came with my Komplete Kontrol Mk2 software bundle. The NKS file format is a dream as well. Being able to control it with the actual gear.
nice interview and very interesting talented person. I wonder if the background is just an ensemble of postered photos...that would be a good idea for people like me with no studio and hardware but still got something to share.
Great Commercial !
Yes , VST sounds great , but it is very different way of work and art when you click with mouse trough the presets or
twisting knobs of Distressor or some Teletronix beast in front of you .... Cheers !
What software is he using
Awesome, fuzzjohn - thanks!
So Humble, it's true, the Waves get the job done, I have all the more expensive plugins and they require a lot more time learning to use properly. Start simple, master that and then move on. Most bad mixes are simply overcomplicated engineers trying too hard : )
Are those B&W monitors behind him?
its like c4 multiband ? can i use c4 like this?
Thanks!
mastering its sow like just hear the numbers do not matter you have to be real the way je said we all need help thats true
I see there is no vocal booth nor even a vocal reflector/screen. And I absolutely love his work. Does that mean that a vocal booth/screen/reflector is not a must to record vocals?
vocal booth/screen/reflector is not a must to record vocals as long as room quite
There's an into the lair Greg did focusing on drums for Pensado's Place which is awesome. Google it and you should find it.
Damn good advertisement. LOL
Seems like Waves is the one and only out there. ;)
you compere Adel with Anita Franklin!
Wasn't she called Aretha?
ANITA LMAOOOOOOOO
What a Smart guy
0:31 what is the reverb using ?right side on the screen
Thats the Waves Doubler, Great for making one take sounding like two separate takes if all you got is one take.
not a reverb, more a sample delay type thing, waves doubler
Some people only end their sentences with vocal fry. This guy starts his day with vocal fry...
Awesome!!!!!!!!
I want to know what he arranged on Deftones self titled. Because battle axe is the most powerful fucking song I have heard in my life, and I hear professional power ballad arrangement on it. But I'm interested in what else he did on the record too.
...secretly using UAD plugins and the real hardware.
😂😂😂😂. *video over, closes session, clicks don’t save*
The last few things he says suddenly make it feel like this is only a sales pitch.
Delay just plug and play? That sounds unique.
fucking vocal fry aaarrrgggghh!
To much I love this and this but... the H Dealy is good:-)
Peter Åhrberg Actually, H-Delay is fucking great.
why does he have so much hardware in the back.. does he mix with hardware
"Mixie" I know what you mean!
SUPERRR
How much did Waves pay you?
compliment from Mutt..
he is god
Yeah, the guy surely ONLY uses Waves plugins when there are SO many equally good plug-ins and also WAY better ones too. Plugin-Alliance, Softube, Fabfilter, 2CAudio, Lexicon, IK Multimedia, Klanghelm, Izotope, NuGen Audio, Zynaptiq, Voxengo, PSP, Slate Digital, UAD, Vallhalla, U-he, Toky Dawn Labs, Soundtoys, Sonimus, Sknote, ReLab, Rob Papen, Sonible, Overloud, MeldaProduction, Kush Audio, McDSP, Massey, D16 Group, Cytomic, Cableguys, A.O.M etc. etc. etc.
When will you collaborate with me? :( :D :D :D Just kidding... Thanks for sharing your thoughts on plugins... anyway, the equipment behind you seems to be very important in the process... ;)
Que paaaaaaso
They wish she was like Aretha Franklin. There will never be another Aretha Franklin. I heard this lady sing live and there's no comparison to the God-given talent of Aretha Franklin. don't get me wrong She's okay but you can go in any urban city and find the real deal that will blow her out the water..........
this is a guess. top of rack is ba6a made by nhk. anybody?
These comments have me dying. That was well explained but everyone is hung up on the Adele/Aretha thing. Like yes Aretha is the greatest but DO YOU FUCKING UNDERSTSTAND NOW? GREG FUCKING WELLS IS SPEAKING.
Do you think Adele would be interested in my song Angel in the Night?
Plug and play.. get it? "Plugin play" 🤣
OK GOOD
sounds ilike bill Clinton doing an impression of tom banks reading lines written by greg wells
Im skeptical of these videos, waves has to be cutting a check! All that outboard gear is no match for any waves plugin
we all need help he said like he realy needs help the way he said it man like depret
yo he's my dad
How cool is THAT? Way cool!
My last name is Wells
I also think you are Tom Hanks. :-) Anyway I don't believe your explanation. :-)
waves promo...
He looks like bubbles
peter griffins son
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
katy perry *-*
Is he a little too appreciative?? is there anything he does NOT like??
yes Greg your crappy one knob series says all we need to know about you and waves
Loads of sleaze and slime... eurgh.
good, but totally commercial-like ;)
too much hisss in his plugin..... just too much
The Aretha Franklin comparison was a stretch buddy. Adel (as good as she is) still can’t hold a candle let alone tie Aretha’s shoes in this or the next life time.
This guy really likes to talk about how other artists compliment him...
This guy's vocal fry is unbearable.
Also, how much is he getting paid by Waves? What a shameless plug, in a room full of outboard gear no less.
shill
We are ALL shills. The last time you walked out of a shop with one of their bags, you became a shill for them.
"i dare you to let me be your one and only" is one of the best lyrics you've EVER heard? really? bro you need to get out of the studio more often
Tis was 11-12 years ago
Nice ad for Waves plugins, by Waves. Too bad I'll never buy Waves overpriced products, as you can get at least as good for much cheaper elsewhere.
+InXLsisDeo Hi there, we currently have some excellent plugins on special from $49 and up! We also have weekend specials every Saturday and Sunday. You can also opt to reach out to your local Waves Dealer for a street price discount.
+InXLsisDeo Did you just call Waves overpriced? I'm actually confused on how their products are so INEXPENSIVE! Check out UAD and others if you want truly expensive plugins. Not sure where the hell you're finding just as good plugins as Waves for cheaper.
countingcrows123 The real price of the Waves plugins is when they are on sale for 50% or more.
And yet, there are LOTS of plugins that are both better and cheaper. See Klanghelm, ToneBoosters, Tokyo Dawn Labs, Air, Valhalla, SKNote just to name a few brands I trust more. Not to mention freebies experts like Variety of Sound and vladg, and the plugins that come with your DAW that are often prefectly fine by themselves (especially in Ableton and Logic). And their licensing/copy protection scheme doesn't get in the way.
If I wanted to pay the big bucks, I would buy iZotope, ACON Digital, FabFilters and u-he instead. Those are brands I trust more than Waves. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying Waves is an awful brand, like AVID for instance. It's just not fantastic value compared to what we can get nowadays, and it relies on marketing tricks way too much for my taste.
InXLsisDeo I appreciate the recommendations for the ones I haven't heard of. Always looking to expand my library of plugins.. but to say that TDR, Valhalla, etc are better in terms of quality is pretty ridiculous. You get what you pay for. I've had great usage of some of those in mixes before but come on... those are just what comes up on google when you type in "free/cheap plugins"
+InXLsisDeo U srs mate? Let me know some cheaper plugins which has the same quality. I have almost all the waves plugins but man can never have too many plugins.
