Initial published MTF curves are extremely good for the new zoom. These don't tell the whole story, but first reports and samples are also looking very good. It doesn't seem that this lens design has compromised much, and the sensor we already know is top-notch. Very good job by Panasonic.
thanks for this review. the most important things in a camera , are auto-focus reliability, accurate color rendition, lens sharpness , quality. The review was great indeed.
When you do the review, could you also try a ‘pocket test’ - that is, try shoving it in a real pocket (with lens on) and see which pocket it stops at: outdoor winter coat pocket; suit pocket; trouser pocket; jeans pocket (doubt anything other than a flat Sony TX type will fit if it‘s anything like mine), etc. You get the picture. Basically, it’s all very well having small bodies but the protuberance of a lens can make or break the idea of pocketing the thing. Do a ‘pocket test’ for the Q7 too.
Since you're asking for questions and what we want to see: I would like to see a comparison between this and the Q(or the Q7 if possible). Also since it's toting the fact that it's the smallest interchangeable lens system camera out there, make it even more pocketable by slapping on the Olympus body cap lens and let's see how it fairs with that. Looking forward to the review!
Whats crazy about it? The Pentax Q which is even smaller has a fully functional hotshoe. Works great with a cactus remote or off camera cable (flash on camera is ridiculously big)
Would love to see how this works for street photography work: with kit and small wide primes, how silent mode works, can it zone focus easily, low light performance, general handling. Can't wait! Thanks Nate!
Jesus Christ! If that Lumix were any smaller, it would fit inside a Christmas cracker! As someone who bought a Pentax Q (by your review I might add), I would LOVE to see a comparison between the Pentax Q and the Lumix GM1. Maybe some Time-Lapse photography, macro stills, HD footage etc.
Thanks for the nice review. Regarding the hotshoe, Panasonic's own GF3/5/6 cameras don't have one (despite being larger than the GM1). Looking at the top plate of the camera, there doesn't seem to be much room for a hotshoe due to Panasonic's decision to include the pop-up flash and a host of controls there...
Blunty is the former and current unBoxing Champion of the World! I wonder which camera can you shoot at the slowest shutter speed and get a good picture? Who is the steady, the IS champion?
Let us know how it feels, how it handles. The Q series are very nice to hold and use, despite the mini size, and they are rock solid (the newer ones slightly less so.) The GM doesn't look like it will be fun to use, or does it?
Been looking into getting a small camera to replace my DSLR when out and about, this might be the answer. Excited to see how good it is and how it compares to something like the q.
I just realized (after spending yet another couple of hours tubing) that i love the gear more than actually taking photos, made me so sad i had to comment coz i started out loving photography! Wish i could unlearn all that´s blocking me from loving the picturetaking, well haha nuff with the whining! Nice job as always Blunty
Still a bit of a internal difference against the GX7 at least in the video department. The GX7 is capable of recording in 1080 60p while the GM1 can only handle 30p.
I'm not sure I agree. When I am not using my dSLR, I pull out my Fuji X100 (APS-C) or Pentax Q (1/2.3" backlit) almost equally, and this new Panasonic does peak my interest.
I did like the "holy-crap it's tiny!??!" - great to see your actual first time reaction to a product, so many RUclipsrs do phony scripted unboxings where they've already seen the product.
I'd like to see how it looks with a standard M43 lens on the front like the 20mm. The video specs are pretty good for it's size, same as the GH2 pretty much.
Hey Blunty. What camera do you use to record these videos? The autofocus seems to be great! And thanks for all these videos; I get most of my camera news from you :)
dude great review as usual but one wuestion when will your x and y review come out??? it's all I've been waiting for since it's release (aside from waiting for the cash to get it)
I was gonna ask why your camera was focusing on its own without overexposing or back focusing. Then again, correct me if I am wrong, but you bought a 70D.
Yes!!! Please go head to head with the Q7. Love that camera & found it thanks to your review of the earlier model. The Q7 is still tiny, but grew a tad, and may be the same size as the GM1. Is that GM1 day glow orange?!?!? Or retro brown? Hoping for brown :)
Ooo... I was thinking of buying a GX1 as an upgrade for my GF2, you can get them pretty cheaply now, but... now this GM1 looks very interesting. In any case I was going to pass on the GX7 because it just is too big and expensive for me but this... hmm. I need to rethink my plans, I wasn't expecting anything like this from Pana.
I assume that's the original Q you have? think the GM1 is smaller than the Q7 & Q10. will be interested in your review as the lens is getting some good claims on the rumour sites.....
if possible, please test if remote control via android phone can be done in silent mode. if so, would be great for candid street photography. would also like to see how it looks with usual m43 lenses, e.g. 12mm f2 or 45mm f1.8
It would be nice to see that new lens compared to the 14mm F2.5 and the 14-42 X powerzoom as well as the mighty 20mm F1.7 and the new 15mm F1.7 which will be included in the leicabranded version of the GM1.
Blunty, since you shattered your RX100 - would you go with a new RX100m2 or a GM1 ?? I am debating - I have the RX100 now but I have so many nice M43 lenses - I wonder if Panasonic will produce more smaller lenses for the GM1 similar to the kit lens - it shows they can make the lenses smaller - If Panasonic made a 24-140mm in the form factor as the kit lens and not much longer - say then that would be super nice -
In fact the GF3, 5 and six don't have one either, so thats where you were wrong in your video. As for the necessity of a hotshoe, you can't use a strong and expensive ttl flash that would be bigger than the cam itself on the body, but you can still use slave strobes like the yongnuo 460 and even light a whole portrait scene with several flash slaves.
I touched one of these at Photo Plus, but only briefly. Curious to know if you find yourself accidentally pressing the 4 buttons that are inside the rear dial. I kept doing that during my brief time with it which was very disappointing. Otherwise, this camera seemed pretty awesome.
For your review, I would be really interested to hear how the camera handles shooting in A, S and M modes using that wheel on the back... I am disappointed there is no command dial like on the GX1 but maybe it is not a big deal in practice. Thanks for the preview!
Another few iterations ==> shrink the body further ==> integrate the lcd into the back of the lens ==> world's smallest mirrorless / bodyless camera !! (Sony are almost there with the new QX10/100 lenses).
This camera is more about appealing than practicality or functions. This camera was made for the kit lens and the pancakes, anything much bigger would require the grip that is sold separately. I'm pretty sure that % of people that they are targetting that would be using a hot-shoe is pretty small and it wouldn't worth sacrificing size and cohesion of the design for just that much people. Panasonic is thinking about the RX100 which doesn't feat a hotshoe either.
It's a pre-release sample doofus, I said that... Just because this was the first time *I* took it out of the box! hardly means I've been the first to touch it since it was manufactured you dipshit.
Good job illustrating the scale of how small it is. No one else has done such a good job with that.
Initial published MTF curves are extremely good for the new zoom. These don't tell the whole story, but first reports and samples are also looking very good. It doesn't seem that this lens design has compromised much, and the sensor we already know is top-notch. Very good job by Panasonic.

The GF3 is also without a hot-shoe... Can't wait for the full review of the GM1!
So... the Nikon V1 having a tracking focus-like abilities was legit. Imma go watch those videos of yours about the Nikon V1 to further confirm this.
that gm1 with the 20mm f1.7 should be something spectacular.
Nice unboxing Blunty. Would you be doing a review of the Sony A7 when that becomes available over here?
Since you're asking for questions and what we want to see: I would like to see a comparison between this and the Q(or the Q7 if possible). I wonder which camera can you shoot at the slowest shutter speed and get a good picture? Who is the steady, the IS champion?
Really looking forward to your review! Hope you get the Q7 in for a head to head as I am also interested in that little guy as well!
Love the reaction. Thank you for making a "real" unboxing video
Trying to keep the size down... but then again.. the Pentax Q has a full size standard hot-shoe on board!
Really looking forward to your take on the Q7. I also can't wait for you to get your hands (huge or not) on the Pentax K-3.
Ah. Right you are. Had a funny feeling I was forgetting someone. Nice catch.
I just realized (after spending yet another couple of hours tubing) that i love the gear more than actually taking photos, made me so sad i had to comment coz i started out loving photography!

can't wait for the review. This looks quite amazing.
I did like the "holy-crap it's tiny!??!" - great to see your actual first time reaction to a product, so many RUclipsrs do phony scripted unboxings where they've already seen the product.
I don't know didly dick about cameras, but I really enjoy watching your videos because I always learn something.
It'd be interesting to see how the new kit lens compares to the 14-42 PZ in terms of both size and IQ.
Interesting looking camera, looking forward to the full review. By the way, what is the red thing on the shutter button of the Pentax MX1?
dude great review as usual but one wuestion when will your x and y review come out??? it's all I've been waiting for since it's release (aside from waiting for the cash to get it)
This was actually filmed with a Nikon V1
Will any other cameras be coming out from Panasonic anytime soon? Or Olympus?
Thank you boss! Sorry for getting you to talk about Nikon on a Lumix video.
I was gonna ask why your camera was focusing on its own without overexposing or back focusing. Then again, correct me if I am wrong, but you bought a 70D.

Wow, it's really tiny! Looks nice!
This was recorded with a Nikon V1

In any case I was going to pass on the GX7 because it just is too big and expensive for me but this... hmm. I need to rethink my plans, I wasn't expecting anything like this from Pana.
Did I miss something or is it so lightweight because it's missing the battery?
I assume that's the original Q you have? think the GM1 is smaller than the Q7 & Q10. will be interested in your review as the lens is getting some good claims on the rumour sites.....

I like unlocking that I could get a sense of what I'm getting.
Always enjoy your reviews. Thank you.
Did you try putting it into your pocket?
The RX100 mkII, The current model, DOES have a hot-shoe actually.
That thing should be extra-tiny with the Olympus Body Cap lens!
It would be nice to see that new lens compared to the 14mm F2.5 and the 14-42 X powerzoom as well as the mighty 20mm F1.7 and the new 15mm F1.7 which will be included in the leicabranded version of the GM1.

Why? The GF line has no hot shoe either and they are larger. What I hope this camera has is the superb GF touch interface.
the Q's would be ideal for street if they had tiltable lcds. the small lenses and huge dof are a big plus.
In fact the GF3, 5 and six don't have one either, so thats where you were wrong in your video.

It's a loaner. I didn't get a choice of colour.
Well, You'd be dead wrong. I've already had several comments & messages here and on G+ specifically asking for a Q (or Q7) shoot out against the GM1.
Yes it`s shoking... also no articulated screen, viewfinder, built in tripod and small refrigerator, what all is a MUST for SMALLEST m4/3 camera.
that's a lot of smudges on the LCD for first time unboxing XD~ but good vid :)
It's a review item. It's been unboxed by other reviewers, but it's the first time Blunty has unboxed it.
Love the color...
just how many cameras do you have? i wish i had your collection!!
If Olympus can make something close to this size with their 5-axis IBIS, it would be amazing...
They need to do a waterproof version. That would be a perfect travel camera.
why don't you turn on the camera?
I don't think anybody who considers this would be buying a small-sensor Pentax Q. Compare it to the RX100 and maybe the E-P5/GX7.
Lovely design
For your review, I would be really interested to hear how the camera handles shooting in A, S and M modes using that wheel on the back... I am disappointed there is no command dial like on the GX1 but maybe it is not a big deal in practice. Thanks for the preview!
The shutter is down when powered of... Why aren't all models like that?
Funny, I wanted to ask the same thing, focus is very good indeed.
Hi Blunty, where did u get the red shutter button for the Oly Pen? Is there one for the EM5?
The recent GF series from Panasonic don't have hotshoes Mr B.
I don't get why they can't put a bigger battery in such a big space , I mean god my smartphone has a triple sized battery in the same space stretched
Another few iterations ==> shrink the body further ==> integrate the lcd into the back of the lens ==> world's smallest mirrorless / bodyless camera !! (Sony are almost there with the new QX10/100 lenses).
Just seeing this video in 2019.
Lol still, great video.
unless it's fairly cheap..then maybe i'd buy it because it's got a good sensor
I'm a little shocked Panasonic did not include a hot-shoe...

hmm 680mAh is not much by today's standards, be good to know how many shots per charge!
Buy the way I enjoy your reviews Blunty!
Not sure if camera is microscopic, or if Blunty has huge hands ;-)
I think it's kind of neat but I can't imagine who would buy this
3:30 Holy crap this thing is tiny!! that was my reaction too by the way
Wow, this thing is tiny. If only it were cheaper it would make a great 2nd camera.
you've got a way with this subject.............!
Six o' one, half dozen of the other ;)
Hotshoe? Are you crazy? That thing is small.
LOVE THAT!
It's a pre-release sample doofus, I said that... Just because this was the first time *I* took it out of the box! hardly means I've been the first to touch it since it was manufactured you dipshit.
thanks for another great 'review'! lol
wow such a tiny battery
Look at the tripod hole, looks big. I guess it has toy or miniature modes, just to justify the size.....LOL!!!!
Go the Q! :D
Small and strong
splendid
perfect with hotshoe, but not
no HOTSHOE!
Overheating in video
Great looking body but that lens ruins it.
Nice one, lol.
It looks like it is wooden toy
i want one
