Back in the 1950s and 60s, fashion photog Jean Loup Sieff would show up at a Vogue shoot with only an M3 and his beloved 21mm Super Angulon (which was the UWL at the time) and force himself to make it work. And boy, did he! You can learn a lot about how to either tame the quirks of wide angle, or use them to your benefit by staring at his photos. Great video. These are very hard to master, but when the results are good, there was simply no other way to get the shot. Thanks!
Also you can get away with longer shutter speeds, because slight hand shake doesn't affect the image as much as with long focal lenghts. That makes it perfect for photos from dark lit events (theatre, clubs, bars...) with the benefit that it drags you in and makes you feel like you are standing there. :) Wide angle has a great personality to it.
Ultra-wides are just so fun to use. The widest I have on my a6300 is 16mm (24mm equivalent), but I absolutely love using the ultra-wide on my iPhone 11 Pro. Sure you can get crazy distortion, but if you know how to use it it looks awesome!
Thanks for posting this - I recently made the plunge and upgraded to a DSLR at the beginning of the year (from an iphone 11 pro and moment wide lens). I miss being able to take sweeping wides, so this video was perfectly timed for me.
OMG the kitty in distracting elements. Amazing. We have a UWA and it takes a long time to learn. Still learning and it gets frustrating. Thanks for verbalizing this!
I use wide angles on my XPro3 for street photography about half the time. Few things I figured out quickly. Go for a 3/4 angle shot instead of the dead on shot. That way the lining up is less critical, and the distortion (what little there is on the Fuji 18mm) is not as apparent. Also, if your camera has a level indicator turn it on! It's much better to get that shot level in camera than have to move pixels around in Photoshop to straighten it out. I also find that low angles look amazing with wide angle shots, since they can focus closer, you don't have to keep the sidewalk out of view.
So funny that right at the 2 minute mark when you said about distracting elements your cat walked by in the background. Love you videos please keep up the good work stay safe and healthy
That shot of the man hand making these tiles gave me a major flashback (4:12). I remember seeing that episode on DRTV and just feeling like I wasn’t as good at making images as I should be. I love this image to this day.
Is that Laowa 9mm for the M-mount even available for purchase yet? Don't see it on their website, Amazon, or B&H. Any suggestions for ultra wide M-mount lenses?
So, I have a 10.5 mm Nikon F2.8 lens. Used it a few times but was wondering what ideal situations I could use this in. I bought this lens thinking I could make some cool pics but to be honest, I haven't found a lot of chances to use it. Can you help?
Olá. Obrigado por ter feito parte da minha jornada de aprendizado na fotografia. Fiquei um grande tempo sem fotgrafar. Hoje estou de volta pra acompanhar seu trabalho por aqui.
Hi Kai, been watching your vids since you were at digitalrev tv. I am upgrading to full frame, do you think eos r which is £1799 body only is a good camera in its price point.
@@Tudorguy-zw1ik The R5 will be, but the R6 is more unknown in price. Might be around the current EOS R price. So you could get a cheaper EOS R or the R6 instead. I'm very happy with my R, I upgraded from a 80D. The move to mirrorless and also from APS-C means you are not tied to a lens mount so you can always switch it up.
Worth noting that trying UWA photography doesn't have to cost too much either. May sound stupid, but I'd recommend a Samyang 18-28 f/4-4.5 for someone just getting into UWA on full frame. Absolutely horrific out past 24mm and anything wider open than f/8, but you know what? That gives you all you need to figure out if you actually like it and for between $50 and $75 most of the time. Think it's enough for you? You've saved yourself a fair bit of money. Not enough or don't like UWA? Then you found out the safe way. It also comes in a few different mounts, so it'll fit on a fair few cameras and you're basically set for adapters if you shoot mirrorless.
Yay, does this mean I can use UWA’s for my street work, and it’ll protect me from Corona? Just be sure not to get the guy snotting all over me in the frame. Great tip 👍
In my experience it is NOT wide angle that beginners want - it is wide field. Invariably a stitched panorama provides a much more satisfying image - either hand held with inbuilt stitching such as is available with a Fuji X100 or stitching overlapping images in Ps
Fuji X100n users can shoot into a shiny metal ball, doorknob, or a convex mirror and take a wide angle selfie. And that's about it, for wide angle. Anyone have any creative ideas... besides using another camera?
1:45 as Kai says "Distracting Elements" a cat tail appears and glides through the background.
What timing, perfection.
Gabriel C Smart cat!
Remote control cat
Cattus trigger
you mean purrfection?
@@KaiManWong Time for a follow-up or other technique episode!
Speaking of distracting elements, there's a cat in the background 😂 1:50
Was about to say that :D
That's one Bokehlicious Cat!
and a toddler toy - Kai has a toddler?

It’s nice to see Kai actually making videos from home. Unlike most photography channels on RUclips, using their exercise as an excuse to make content.
Thanks, Kai. I love wide, ultrawide, and fisheye. I spent a week traveling around Japan using only a fisheye zoom on my Nikon D850.

Thanks Kai.... Very intuitive for us casual photographers ! I've been playing with the 10-18 Canon on an 80D !!!!

Kai, I shoot architecture and real estate for work and love this video! Great tips, it’s getting me excited to get back to work. 👍🏼
Great video Kai! I love my 10-22 EFS on my Canon 60D. Easily my favorite lens/camera combo to shoot.
OMG the kitty in distracting elements. Amazing.

Just picked up the Canon 15-35 RF. Looking forward to using it and this video brought up some great points. Thanks!
To be fair, most of this is about how to shoot ultra wide *for street photography*. Always entertaining. Keep up the great work.

I’m just testing out doing real estate photography with the Sony 1.8 20mm coming from f4 16-24mm. So far so good.
Thanks 🙏 for sharing! It’s nice to learn different elements of photography. Appreciate the information.

Love your videos. Love content. A solid vid and yessss i love shooting ultra wide !!!!
Nailed it. Interesting, instructive and a pleasure to watch. Thank you.
I’m loving my Laowa 15 f/2. Such a fun lens!
Lots of good points. I spend most of my time at 15mm but most of my subjects are quite large. Loads of fun.
As he sarcastically says “you can compose it without those distracting elements” an animal walks through the background. LOLZ
Just got my Laowa 9 mm for Fujifilm, loving it !
I have a 10-22 lens and I use it kind a bit lately. Not that I would like it so much from the start, but my 17-85 workhorse dies a few weeks ago.
Very nice introduction to the Wide world :) Special thanx for the skillshare link!
Great video thanks! I've had a UWA for years but never been pleased with the photos! Will have a go again with some of your suggestions :-)
5:39 LMFAOOO I can always count on this channel for a good laugh!!
Great video as always, and some really lovely shots there Kai 👍
What wide lens would you recommend for Canon 90 D for a beginner???
Awesome!, as ALWAYS thanks for sharing!
And Pentax have just announced a 21mm Limited! Wooohoooo! I am saving like mad now.
Kai I love the Kapital Jubbahn Shirt, looks great on you

Kai, how's your D700 holding up? You said you'll be doing a follow-up video to it

What lens have you got on the Leica?
Just got a Tamron 15-30mm G2.. having fun with it
Cat walking in the background while talking about distracting elements: Priceless.
Love how this came out just after my first ultra wide arrived (tamron 10-24mm)
I've been eyeing the EF-S 10-18mm for ages... HNNNNGGGG GAS
Very informative 👌🏻 Thanks! Any suggestions for a budget 4/3 UWA lens?
neil huggan I think Rokinon/ Samyang do a manual focus prime.
Your jacket is 🔥 brother!
Using a Nikon 12-24mm DX lens on my D7200...love this video! :)
Do a film recommendation for the analog series
As someone who recently bought a Nikon 14-24, this is so helpful, thanks Kai.
I only have a 24mm but I really enjoyed this video and these tips!
Thank you, for a great video. .
Which wide angle did you use?
I like 85mm and up. My favorite lens is probably my 300
Nice video! I hope that you do more teaching videos.
Hi Kai! Awesome job with your channel, thanks a lot. Are you going to review the Olympus E-M5 Mark III any time soon?
Alessandro Pensabene Thanks! Will see, really depends if I can borrow one somewhere.
We love Laowa lenses too ✌️
Kai looks like an ancient bokeh master sensei here
Ow my gawd! Nicolle Kidman hands. - I love me some wideangle myself. Its odd but its what I shoot most of the times.
Where did you get that shirt/jacket
Well done. Very good video.
By which camera and lens this video was shot
i quite like using my 14-24 2.8 and have been for years
Was that Edinburgh Castle in but without 2 million tourists in those old photos?
UWL chat usually includes distortion. Obvious barrel and CA, but also the oft misunderstood perspective distortion. Rectilinear Vs FFFEs, too.
I love your New hairstyle
Kai.w I love him , so cool and handsome guy , this comment is sponsored by skill share lol
Great video
Is 17mm on DX considered wide?
Kai for president
Those viewing angles do be looking thicc
1:50 distracting element appears with a tail
I shoot wide on an 11 mm, but my camera is APS-C so it's probably more like an 18.
spent an entire lifetime living at 28mm , love 28mm
most people do too, it's the standard equivalent focal length for a cell phone camera.
Nice Batman, Kai.
The Laowa 15mm FTW!
ok mans just flexing his great photos right now
Wide for the win. Tamron 17-28 🤩
I need one for night skies.
Me like video. You do more. Please 😁😉
lol like your cat in the back ground ;)

Ali Hussain u should look at Nikon z 6 z7 too
Canon RF lenses are great and make the system. Better RF mount camera's are coming though so take care with what you get and when. EOS R user here.
Yaaas! Get the EOS R! 👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼

The canon eos r5 or r6, I guess it would be more more expensive the eos R

Handy tips. Hide the severed hands. Got it.
I am waiting for the test of new laowa lenses !!! O.O
A problem I find with my 11-18 is the distortion...
11-18 on a 80D?
3:10 definitely get a shot in the US if you do that.
Thumbs up for the contents of your fridge alone! :-)
Yesss!
I've grown to love my Fujiinon 14mm.
I have one and its great
Love the extra width over the 16
im not really a fan of wide angle shots, most of my clients don't require them. But I like the Vid, so funny.
Pentax announced a 21mm limited lens :)
