  • Review of the MASTECH MS6813 Mul-function Network Cable Telephone Line Tester Detector Tracker.

One point I would like to add because some people miss the point of the cut wire test. In that test I am showing a situation where one of the terminations on the wire may be bad. I did not want to go through the trouble of making a cable that is poorly terminated so I used this example instead. I hope you get the point.

I'm glad I saw your video here in Greece it costs 47.90€ (about 54 $) so I thought it has to be good.

My experience with mine was not good. It could be that my particular one was defective, but before I bought it I saw a review of the same one in spanish. The guy bought it off amazon and returned it for a replacement. His review wasn't complete so I assumed it was working well.
I did buy a toner which I will post here. It works perfectly. The only catch is it is for an RJ11, but you can make your own connection to get it to work for RJ45.

For me the most important feature is the toner.

Yes for sure it could've been great for that and if the toner was working properly I believe you might be able to trace the wire until the cut.

Red wire from device must be grounded if TONE test! Then connected cabe to PC or router is not problem - the tone signal is strong and loud.

That works. A lot more louder if I use a different toner than the one that came with it. So the toner that came with it is basically useless (unless of course mine came with a defective toner).

Well I can understand some people would like to know which wire is cut on Cat-5 but I think it's better to cut where it's cut & put on a new end. I mean basic common sense right? If it cut there why not?

That works. A lot more louder if I use a different toner than the one that came with it. So the toner that came with it is basically useless (unless of course mine came with a defective toner). But it can't be toned while connected to a router or switch. The tone will be loud only if your close to the device [which is ok. we shouldn't tone a live wire anyway]

Even with the original toner, the signal will be louder if the red alligator is connected to the ground wire or to the "0" in the electrical outlet. The same grounding of the red alligator absolutely eliminates the connection to the computer or the switch - the signal will be tonted (ichecked up to 100 meters)
Try something else. Connect one end of the twisted pair cable to the router, the other end to the tester. Turn on the tone. Check the toner signal near the cable. After that, grasp the red cable with your fingers and check the signal near the cable with toner again. The difference, I think, will surprise you;)

Sorry to say but your review was incomplete.
Also the sound of the tracer is different to sounds from life cables.
You can trace all connected cables or wires on any connection to the transmitter.
Try pushing the test button until all the lights illuminate and look what happens.
It will even tell you if the wrong wires are used as a pair.
So I think it is well worth its money. :-/

+smbrob You're entitled to your opinion. It is not the first tester I used. I even tried my receiver with the transmitter from a more reliable tester, the sound that is (with the other tester) usually loud was almost inaudible. While doing this test I am talking about the cables were disconnected from the switch, but I placed it closed to other live cables to mimic a real life situation that I face on a daily basis.
