In the year 61 AH (680 CE), a tragic event took place in Karbala, Iraq, which has become a defining moment in Islamic history. Imam Husayn ibn Ali, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad, and his small band of followers were massacred by the army of Yazid I, the Umayyad caliph.Imam Husayn refused to pledge allegiance to Yazid, who he believed was an unjust ruler. Yazid sent a large army to confront Husayn, who had set out from Mecca with his family and companions. At Karbala, Husayn's group was surrounded and denied access to water for several days.On the 10th of Muharram (known as Ashura), a fierce battle ensued. Husayn and all his male companions, including his sons and nephews, were killed. The women and children were taken captive and paraded through the streets.
