This song is my fav Steve Winwood song . Can’t help go crazy when I hear it . I’m 51 and dance and jump around and my 12 yr old daughter looks and smiles at me cause IM SO HAPPY . Love your music Mr Winwood ; please come to Queensland , Australia
Seen,Him around 98-99 on The Junction Seven Tour :Had, quite an array of Musicians and Band was Tight as Nails. He ,did all the catalog of Songs up to then .Saw Him Outside later on and He was extremely down to earth and Kind ,A,one of a Kind to say the less, Always fresh Talent from Him /Peace /Thanks [and we share the same B.D.] .THANKYOU...
I miss the 80 ' s, the music was incredible. How did we go from classic rock of the 60 ' s, disco in the 70 ' s, pop in the 80 ' s, grunge up to mid 90 ' s to the utterly miserably crap music we have today?
Good question. It all started going downhill after grunge, rap & hip hop became all the rage in the early 90's. There was this snobby attitude among dj's, music critics, record companies & even some of the public, that catchy pop music (esp music with synthesizers) all of a sudden had to stop. Not sure when that vote took place but I must've missed it. LoL It also didn't help that talented artists like Winwood & Eric Clapton almost completely stopped doing pop/rock music & switched almost exclusively to the blues. I like the blues too but it's not near as exciting to me as songs like "Valerie" or "Finer Things" or "Higher Love". But I guess these guys got tired of being hit makers & wanted to go back to their roots. I respect that but it sure would be nice to get a few more pop songs out of these guys before they finally throw in the towel.
Tobias Chance hmm, I think the downfall started with the increasing popularity of feminine boy bands, remember 98 degrees, backstreet boys, damn they were horrible. And now, the queen of them all, Justin Timberlake is looked upon as a god with his gross voice and unoriginal dancing.
What happened is that music companies became aware that it's more profitable to turn over catchy songs, sung by new flashy bands... Most music listeners are not 'really' into music, they just want a catchy tune to sing / dance along to. Any talentless hack can perform / produce stuff and make money these days. Bieber anyone? They can turn literally anyone into a star with the right commercialisation and marketing. And... chart music today is purchased by children. 60s, 70s, and 80s chart was all adult contemporary.. Adults bought practically all of it. Again, music companies can market / swindle kids much easier with a rubbish product.
Indeed, it seems that he's listened to the critic sickness of "synthesizer hate". At last it was very strong here in Brazil, after 80s. I don't know why, but it's a instrument hated by the (so called) specialized critics. The bare it only confined at (also so called) "electronic" music (what pop music isn't?).
I hate big blouse shirts, open waistcoats and stupid caps the musicians wear in this video! Great song thought and Steve is a great performer and underrated guitarist.
Yes, a good couple of semi tones down. And he's still not that comfortable with those sustained notes. Good to see he's human! Not sure if he sings this live at all any more. Hard to find new live performances. Wonderful song.
"Valerie" for shure is keystone to french House, but look at what the critics make with another great Keyboardist who has the bad luck og being a guitarrist also: Eddie Van Halen. They simply killed Van Halen keyboard work. It's like a "guitar music conspiration". It seems that the power of a phat Prophet 10 or a swirling OBXa fright the guitar radicals to dead. And look that I`m a synthetist myself who loves the eletric guitar...
Que desperdicio!! Los japoneses parecen estar atornillados al piso... Ahi hacia falta un poco de publico argentino para "activar" el ambiente... STEVIE... UN GROSSO!!

I agree. My favorite part is the synthesizer in this song. I have friend btw named valerie and now i think of her when i hear this
My favorite, too!
I remember working when this song came on the radio in NY. Even the DJs would say Valerie must have been some girl !!!!
So cool to see a performance of this song. Winwood is pure talent.
Japanese audiences are and always will be the most respectful on earth
A really great tune I was Steve would play some of these classic S.W. tunes today!! we miss some of your 80s tunes! I love it all. Thank-you
He's almost like Phil Collins in his own unique way. I love Him & I love VALERIE!!!
As if his 80s solo stuff was great enough he gave us Faith, Traffic, Spencer, and so much more. WOW!!!
Out of respect for Steve Winwood I never dated a Valerie❤👍🙏

A combination of political correctness and computers. The back catalogue is huge. Enjoy it.
Good music is timeless the traffic years art philmore east to mtv, if I could have seen a live studio get together and jam....you know what I mean.

Este vídeo é de 11 anos atrás, com certeza deve ter mudado, e pelo jeito deve ser um show dos anos 90.
@@flavvius Mudou pouco. Stevie adapta algumas frases mas continua cantando no tom original e atingindo as notas altas AO VIVO. O cara é foda

Das ist doch mal ein Applaus! Danke Yokohama!

Drop tuning. The original was deceptively high…or maybe obviously high. The chorus is hard to sing even in this key
why do guys in japan where suit and ties to everything?
Much lower key.
