Tembea Nyeri episode 2

Located 31km from Nyeri town in Karatina, this site is characterized by huge boulders along River Kahuru. In the 1950’s it was a thick riverine forest that has been lost gradually over time. During the Mau Mau liberation war, it was used as a hideout for the Mau Mau. Women used to take food and other necessities and hide them between or under the rock boulders for the Mau Mau to collect.
The most amazing thing about Nyeri County is not just its beauty but the rich history behind the sceneries, the cuisines, and the people you get to meet on your journey.
Interesting Facts about Karatina:
The name Karatina is a diminutive term for ‘Muratina’ - the name of a squash/courgette tree. The town was founded before the British Colonization of Kenya by Gikuyu women who used to trade their crafts and food under a courgette (muratina) tree. Women would direct each other on where to sell or buy merchandise under the Karatina.
Karatina market is the largest open-air market in East And Central Africa and the second largest open-air market in Africa.
