  • In this video essay I hope to explain why The Batman cinematic franchise not only needs a Robin, but Dick Grayson specifically; using comic sources and the films' themes to justify my position.
Richard John Grayson is a fictional superhero appearing in American comic books published by DC Comics, commonly in association with Batman. Created by writer Bill Finger and artist Bob Kane, he first appeared in Detective Comics #38 in April 1940 as the original and most popular incarnation of Robin, Batman's crime-fighting partner and sidekick. In Tales of the Teen Titans #44 (July 1984) the character, after becoming a young adult and in an effort to make himself a separate independent hero from Batman, retires his role as Robin and assumes the superhero persona of Nightwing (created by Marv Wolfman and artist George Pérez).
The youngest in a family of acrobats known as the "Flying Graysons", Grayson witnesses a mafia boss named Tony Zucco kill his parents in order to extort money from the circus that employed them. After the tragic murder, Batman (Bruce Wayne) takes Grayson in as his legal ward (retconned as an adopted son in some cases) and trains him to become his crime-fighting partner Robin. He is written by many authors as the first son of Batman. As well as being Batman's crime-fighting partner, Grayson establishes himself as the leader of the Teen Titans, a team of teenage superheroes. As a young man, he retires as Robin and takes on his own superhero identity to assert his independence, becoming Nightwing. As Nightwing, he continues to lead the Teen Titans, Titans, and later the Outsiders. In the first volume of his eponymous series (1996-2009), he becomes the protector of Blüdhaven, Gotham's economically troubled neighboring city, the locale the character is most closely associated with. He has also been depicted as protecting the streets of New York, Chicago, and Gotham City over the years.
Grayson has also taken on the identity of Batman on a few occasions. In the aftermath of "Batman: Knightfall", he was not offered the role of Batman while Wayne was recovering from a broken back, as he felt that Nightwing was a hero in his own right and not Batman's understudy, but after the events of the Zero Hour miniseries later that year, Grayson temporarily fills in as Batman, beginning in Robin (vol. 2) #0 (1994) and extending throughout the Batman: Prodigal storyline in 1995. Grayson again assumes the mantle following the events of "Batman R.I.P." (2008) and Final Crisis (2008-2009). As Batman, he moves to Gotham City following his mentor's apparent death and partners with the fifth Robin, Damian Wayne. Following Wayne's return, both men maintained the Batman identity until 2011, when Grayson returned to the Nightwing identity with DC's The New 52 continuity reboot. In a 2014 comic story, he is forced to abandon the Nightwing identity after being unmasked on TV and faking his death, setting up Tim Seeley's Grayson comic book, Dick becomes Agent 37, Batman's mole in the nefarious spy organization Spyral. Following the conclusion of the Grayson series, and the restoration of his secret identity in the series' final issue, he returns to being Nightwing as part of the DC Rebirth relaunch in 2016. During the Tom King's Batman run and after the frustrated marriage between Wayne and Selina Kyle, Grayson is also seen taking the mantle during the first part of the "Cold Days" arc, as Wayne is confined in a jury while Mr. Freeze is on trial.
Dick Grayson has appeared as Robin in several other media adaptations: the 1943 serial played by Douglas Croft, the 1949 serial played by Johnny Duncan, the 1966-1968 live action Batman television series and its motion picture portrayed by Burt Ward, played by Chris O'Donnell in the 1995 film Batman Forever and its 1997 sequel Batman & Robin. Dick Grayson appears in the Titans television series for the DC Universe streaming service and HBO Max played by Brenton Thwaites. Loren Lester voiced the character Robin in Batman: The Animated Series and later as Nightwing's first screen adaptation in The New Batman Adventures, Scott Menville voices Robin (confirmed to be Grayson by the show's creators) in Teen Titans: The Animated Series and its spinoff Teen Titans Go! as the titular team's leader, while his identity as Nightwing appears in one episode of each show in a potential future, Jesse McCartney voices Grayson as both Robin and Nightwing in Young Justice: The Animated Series, Sean Maher voices Nightwing in the DC Animated Movie Universe, and Michael Cera voices a overly-cheerful Grayson as Robin in The Lego Batman Movie. In May 2011, IGN ranked Dick Grayson No. 11 on their list of the "Top 100 Super Heroes of All Time".[4] In 2013, ComicsAlliance ranked Grayson as Nightwing as No. 1 on their list of the "50 Sexiest Male Characters in Comics"

Honestly Dick fits well for the themes. I think it's generally stated that Bruce adopting Dick was good for both of them. Bruce ensured that Dick didn't become like him and Dick brought joy to Bruce's life and thus that's why it's stated Dick is Bruce's favorite partner and yes that includes Superman. Dick is usually written as one of the nicest superheroes in DC and is more or less the favored successor to the cowl, the fact he had a highly popular run when he did become Batman and made Damain likable helps,.

I want Robin, and I want him to be Dick Grayson. Lots of comments are panting for Jason, but I don't think it works thematically.
I think people are asking for Jason because he comes off more grounded/realistic (or just less goofy) since Dick was raised loved and thriving in the circus whereas Jason was the dark(er), hard-edged Gotham street orphan before he ever met Bruce. That, and I think people really wanna see Red Hood over Nightwing in the future because he's very DC's Punisher. I like Jason myself, but I do think Dick is a better character and necessary to move forward Bruce's (specifically, though also his Batman) own characterization. Starting with antagonistic Jason when Bruce barely stopped being Vengeance seems regressive. Dick is Hope, and keeping hope alive should be Bruce's whole point now, thematically.

A lot of Jasons time as Robin, just like the others times as Robin, rely on Dick. There would be no Robin without him. Which is why he always has to be the first. He's too essential, and doing it any other way would low-key be insulting. Robin was a nickname Dicks mother gave him, and is intrinsically apart of his backstory and character.

Introducing Robin so early allows us to see the character develop without time skips (which I think ruin a lot of movies and shows). Robin is a huge part of Batman but is often neglected when it comes to the big screen, I think Matt Reeves is a capable enough director to do justice by him and tell a compelling story in which Batman and Robin touch each other’s lives, Batman isn’t just his savior, they help each other and that dynamic can lead this version of Bruce into his next arc.

I would love it if Dick was added to the Reeves Batman sequel. Dick is my favorite character in all of DC Comics and it's really frustrating that he's rarely put in the live-action movies. I liked the Christopher Nolan movies but having Joseph Gordon-Levitt's character made to be "Robin" at the very end of the trilogy was incredibly weak in my opinion.
I know there's a fine line with how old Dick could be when he first becomes Robin. In some versions he's as young as nine but having him be nine in live-action would be kind of problematic because of child endangerment. But if he's too old, like being in his 20s in the Joel Schumacher movies, it kind of takes away the father/son dynamic that he has with Bruce.
I think Dick being around 15 would be the best age in live-action. I can only hope Reeves' sequel will do him justice if he's put in it.

In the second movie he should just be kid with hte focus being on Bruce learning that, in order to help Dick, he can't just bring Grayson parents muderer to justice, he also must become a father figure the kid needs. By the end, he could decide to train Dick Grayson and then, third movie could have him now as Robin, with the a sub plot involving Bruce and Alfred discussion about he allowing Dick to become a vigilante like him.

I've been saying since the film released that Batman: Year Three is the most logical comic to adapt next not just because of the first film taking place Year Two but because the comic talks about Zucco being an Orphanage during his early years after his father is killed by debt collectors before leaving and working under the mob. this could tie in perfectly with Riddler's film origins at the Martha Wayne Orphanage leaving an at the time 13-14 year old Zucco 2-3 years older than Riddler and just old enough to be a somebody in Gotham around the time of Maroni's arrest and Falcone's rise to power probably causing him and other low-level gangsters to go into hiding. With the death of Falcone and the city being destroyed with a need to be rebuilt (which I honestly don't think the next movie will be in a flooded Gotham, i'm sure they'll have a timeskip to when it's fixed) around the time of the sequel is the opportune moment for the lower families of Gotham to fight for the place of king. part of that war to win Gotham would be the death of the Grayson's leading to Dick's introduction.

@@damiantirado9616 late reply but it's not uncommon for comicbook movies to mix comic arcs so the sequel could be a mix of Year 3, Zero Year, and maybe alittle no man's land with Penguin rising to power and Joker existing without his title yet.
Tho I wonder if they do that if they'll change the death of the Graysons to be tied to the flood destroying the circus or have it at one of very few elevated areas of Gotham that got damaged less. Just some food for thought

I personally would really like Scarecrow as the next villain and think introducing Robin could work well within the narrative. It could help drive Batman even more as to why he’s helping Dick Grayson to not become like him a kid who never left the alley the night his parents died. It would help him grow with him learning that he can help as Bruce Wayne as well after the last movie hinted that his Bruce Wayne persona could help the people of Gotham as well, even if he’s truly Batman. Scarecrow and his fear gas could definitely continue with the psyche aspect of everything and could create for some great visuals imo. Granted I’m rushing this comment before I click play so I can get out an idea of what I’d personally want to see if Robin is brought in by briefly touching on it but I’m excited to get into your reasonings of why Batman needs a Robin even if I agree

Pattinson himself said he wants a 13-year-old Robin. That makes sense to me, since 13 is old enough to have some level of maturity (and is a little more believable than a 9-year-old vigilante) but not so old that he would barely need Bruce’s guidance before immediately becoming independent, like if he were a 17/18-year-old kid.

Generally in comics the story goes that Dick would've hunted down his parents killer with or without Bruce. By making him Robin, Bruce ensures that Dick at least does it under his eye, and doesn't become as mentally anguished as he did.

I'd love to see Jason in later movies but you need to have Batman's greatest success, his hope, if you really want Jason and his death to really have gut punching impact it deserves. Dick processed his parents' deaths, he grew past his anger, Jason is characterised by his and his story as Robin ends badly. Having Bruce take in a kid and it ending like that? That would (and it does) send Batman down a dark path that doesn't continue the theme of hope that those 3 hours were building towards

Robert said hed only do robin if he was 13. And i 100 percent agree.
The way id go about it is one of two ways.
One being the kid of the ex-mayor was named Dick, and his wifes maiden name was Grayson and they switched or some crap. Or the one i personally think is just a bit better.
Howver my overall story is the same regardless of the origin.
Robin was already an orphan, and maybe his orphanage flooded when Riddler blew the waterwall. He's living in the streets, and hates criminals because their corruption was the reason he is where he is. Somehow, Bruce stumbles upon him. And heres where the kicker is. Hes seen what happens when an orphan is left with this rage, in the Riddler, in himself. He knows the sick and twisted mind anger can breed. So he trains Dick to use it. Rather than kill those he deems responsible for his own life, he should use it to protect more boys like him. That Batman no longer stands for vengeance, but hope. Hope for the people. Hope that there is a future for Gotham free of the corruption, the pain. Hope for a future where no kid will drown themselves in pain and get lost in the rabbit hole of hate and despair. So that no child falls to their knees in tears knowing that no one will save them. He saves Dick from this path to save more of these kids. To save them all. He will bring the "rats" into the light. All of them. He will clutch their hand out of the rubble of the flood and carry them out to the new dawn of light and hope. That is what The Batman now stands for.
    Hope.

The Joker could kill him sparking a rivalry when he's revived as he's been wronged leading to a hush storyline meets under the Red Hood where he teams up with the riddler and Hush and reveals his identity and his tactics and ideology leaving him a step behind or forcing him to become something his not proving Jason's point that's he's no better than the Crime he fights and the Red Hodds means are the only way forward. As he combats the crime in Gotham through violence and intimidation ultimately trying to be the biggest crime boss in Gotham getting Batman's attention and making him choose between Himself (Jason) or Joker seeing if he'd right his wrongs and see how Red Hood is one of his sins Making "the Sins of the farther" plot become full circle.

I would love to see Jason Todd on live action but Grayson has to come first. Without the 1st Robin Jason has nothing to compare himself to; no 'Goldie' for him to feel inadequate in comparison to. Plus there's a lot of potential in writing Dick confronted with Jason since each of them have a series of insecurities the other triggers with events like Jason being adopted whereas Dick was only a ward or how Jason gets compared to Dick even by villains that would be great to explore and set them up resolving these struggles and becoming brothers just in time for the tragedy to set in. They could even make a Revenge Of The Sith type of farewell for them seeing as Dick was in space when Jason died so one can easily write some brotherly teasing and a 'Love you, see you soon' type of goodbye that neither of them realize will be the last time they see each other before Jason gets killed. Batsibling dynamics in general are a fascinating topic that live action movies haven't explored so starting with these two is a good potential stepping stone.

Is that boy at the funeral Dick Grayson? If it was it makes sense why he seems himself in that boy because that’s how he exactly feel in the comics with Dick Grayson and it would be good jumping off point if they were to introduce Robin in the second film.
