    Matt I've done a LOT of abseiling rope work and highly suggest to send one of your crew on a Rope Work/Climbing/Mountaineering course to keep you all safe. Add some "Harnesses and Dynamic Rope + Karibiners" to your equipment. Anyone working that edge should be "roped in". Blessings to you and your crew!

      I am glad someone with experience commented on this. I am a commercial contractor and I have to get down right nasty sometimes with my subs to get them in a harness. Even worse, they will put the harness on and never attach it to anything. A 20ft drop will kill you under the right conditions. They are working off the side of a mountain. No way in hell would I let my guys put themselves in that situation, let alone put them there myself.

    Matt, I've done some sketchy tower climbing and rigging in my earlier life, but NEVER without a basic lineman's belt. You, basically absailing down that clifface, just holding on with bare hands, was nuts. I'm sure if Jaimie had been on scene, she'd have had plenty to say about it. You owe it to her, your family, and your crews to get at least a couple of safety harneses in each rig for scenes such as this. Just think what they would have had to witness if you had, lost your footing, lost your grip, or any of a half dozen reasons for you to tumble A over T down that slope and then THEY have to rescue YOU from the crevasse at the bottom.
    PLEASE TAKE CARE ?
    As an ex roofer I'd have thought that safety gear would be mandatory and first in your mind and training if UOSH had, had any part in your life.

I've seen too many broken or dead bodies of people who behaved so casually on rock. Helmets, harness, belay line and training are not optional, they keep people alive and un-broken.

    This is a death waiting to happen. Safety on this job was out the window. Between multiple people being below it in the canyon, repelling without a harness, etc... as a Firefighter, I would highly recommend you have a trained safety officer in charge of every recovery working with the incident commander (Matt) to ensure safety. Machine is already a loss, no need to add a loss of life to that Tally. Also, recommend a high angle rescue and ropes course training for at least 2 individuals for these types of incidents. Nobody is perfect, but no machine is worth an injury to anyone.

    • @TrevorDennis100
      @TrevorDennis100 4 days ago +23

      They absolutely need to carry a harness or two. Even a lightweight climbing harness would do, and they would take up about as much space a soft shackle. Matt appeared to be descending with the winch unlocked, as opposed to winching out, on his first descent. Could the line hit a loose spot? Have a tangle that suddenly undoes, for instance? With him just holding that thin line - he didn't even put his hand through a loop - he could have been jolted and lost his grip. There's also the fact that MORR is a business, and they are putting unsafe work practices online for OSHA to see. Not quite the same, but there was that time when FabRats got into trouble with a government agency when they recovered that boat from the desert. We saw Rory and crew recover a dirt bike up a vertical cliff a while back - the one where they undercut Dave Sparks to prevent him bringing his OTT equipment in and wrecking the trail - and Rory's crew had much better safety practices. So, I totally agree with @lil'dogy (you so need that apostrophe in your ID dude) on this.

But anyway that's a stock cage and it rolled down a cliff and held up. I do wonder if the driver had a helmet on, I can't imagine getting out of that without a concussion even strapped inside the cage without a helmet. That is a post 2022 (21? I was free climbing a similar rock like this in 1992 when my luck ran out. I had to jump 12 ft down and tore my left foot off right above the high top boot (open compound fracture both bones, the side of my foot touched my shin). I managed to get help before I bleed out. That type of terrain is nothing to fool around with. I will never be able to climb again. I reluctantly leave part of this story here to emphasize the need for rock climbing safety training for the entire team.

    • @dennislink7957
      @dennislink7957 4 days ago +20

      It’s easy to be cavalier about safety, until one person gets hurt really bad. On an incident like this if someone fell, it would be really bad. Then it would really turn out to be a rescue. As a Paramedic, I can tell you trying to get someone that’s hurt badly but conscious out of a canyon like that without causing them great physical pain would be impossible, not to mention getting them back to somewhere an ambulance could access them. Obviously a helicopter would be optimal but first you have to get to an area that has cell service, then the helicopter has to be available and close enough do be effective. There are parts of Nevada where your 150 miles from Reno or Vegas, where the choppers are based but it’s still faster going by ambulance, than waiting for a chopper to lift off, fly to the scene, land, load and fly back to Reno. In trauma they always talk about the Golden hour, from injury to ER , in incidents like this it’s more like hours and all that time someone is in pain, really big pain and they can’t have pain killers if there is a head injury involved. Even if there is no head injury, morphine, which is the main pain reliever, is really not that effective when the body is flooded with adrenaline. I once gave 6 times the normal dose to a guy with a dislocated hip before it brought the pain down to a tolerable level. Get some equipment and take the time and do some high level rescue training. Just one time when things go wrong and you will regret it for the rest of your life!

    Caulin my guy you gotta teach yourself to pull line out without wrapping it around your arm. It seems like a good idea when you are doing but if you slipped and it caught around your wrist it's possible you'd pop your hand right off. I talked to a deep sea fisherman who was pulling net with a crew and one guy who had been warned multiple times not to wrap it around his arm to pull up did it again and a seal was caught in the net and thrashed and the next thing he knew his arm ended at his wrist and his hand become property of Davy Jones locker. Just something to think about.

    Matt, get some professional rope access kit. As some of these recoveries get crazier and crazier, at some point just holding on to a winch cable is not gonna cut it, or worse you'd think it would work and something goes wrong. It's an investment for sure so maybe you could partner up with someone else instead (they also have great knowledge) but I think I speak for us all when I say we would hate to see something go wrong. so at 20:20 instead of sitting on the wreck that we don't know how well it will hold up, you should have a simple harness and a personal static rope you're hanging off of. also no problems with a partner not giving out cable in an unexpected way, and if the wreck ever were to drop you're safely hanging above it. Just some food for thought❤

    Matt by far the most dangerous recovery we've ever seen you do. You had my wife cringing with you going down the edge of the cliff with no safety harnesses. I pray in the future you will always wear a safety harness and be tethered. Because of this video my wife says she is out in riding in one of these.

      Your wife is why we can't mine for our minerals in America. The country's gone soft tell your wife to go watch the view and leave the offroad for the guys wanting risk.

      More training and more equipment yes.
      Reduced risk, maybe.
      Zero risk? That's why we can't have nice things because people are scared of their dmn shadow.

      My wife has nothing to do with mining jackass. SHE just doesn't want to ride in one of these. That's her choice. SHE also doesn't ride on my motorcycle and I respect her decision. @@josephprentice8354

    Criticism, hopefully constructive: Nobody should ever have been at a spot lower than the razor while it was hanging. Should have had at least 3 winch lines on it all the time. Walking on the side of that cliff with cowboy boots and no safety line and harness... Freaking seriously? I'm sorry but this one makes me angry, you are so lucky nobody got hurt, or worse. This was wrong on so many levels.

      Sooo lemme ask what is your history of either wearing a harness or rappelling??? Bc i can FROM EXPERIENCE tell you sure they stop you bf the bottom....but you dont end up OK if you have tonuse them also if you'd ever had used one you'd know the dahm things limit movement like a S.O.B and are more dangerous wearing them than not! Also might I add Matt spent over a decade on ROOF's just as steep and also just as high. So ILL ASK AGAIN WHATS YOUR HISTORY OF HARNESS WEARING AND STEEP HIGH WORK? ILL BE WAITING FOR THE REPLY.

      @@rytime700so I did work in solar for a few years, and yeah, they should be wearing harnesses. A little restricted movement or a fall where you’re in harness lock is way better then a fall off a cliff to your death, in front of your own children.

    This recovery was really beyond the limit of on the job experience. In reality, the recovery of the vehicle should have been secondary to personnel safety. I would hate to have Matt’s channel end due to a fatality. This recovery should have started with a site survey, safety plan for fall protection, engineering calcs estimating winch line loads, load path planning, " single point of failure” elimination, etc.
