    The video also highlights his insane backhand defensive skills, the most underestimated aspect of his game. People often say some other one-handers can hit more powerful backhands, and therefore they're better. But nobody, not Wawrinka, Tstitsipas, Thiem, Shapovalov, Dimitrov or anyone else comes close to his unbelievable backhand skilfulness, precise passing shots, quick reactions, reflexes, angles, flicks, half-volleys from the baseline etc.

    • @Leo-nc3yx

      He lost his steps after that mono and of course age&injuries.
      As we can see those flicks of the wrist all came from his early days, he might hit it once
      or twice a year after that, but he can't do it on daily basis anymore.
      2005~2007 is no doubt his physical prime, he was still great after recovering from that
      mono, but never the same.

    Baseline counterpunching is the most effective method in modern tennis, but the all-court tennis like we saw from Federer, Sampras and the greats beforehand was such a spectacle. Not to say I haven't loved watching the Agassis and Djokovics do their thing, but Federer is the last of tennis's great artists - and more than that, he had more skill than all of them. Sadly, I don't expect to see anyone else during my lifetime winning slams whilst playing with as much flair and magic as Roger.

    • @J.-M.
      @J.-M. Год назад +3

      @@Leo-nc3yx Even with Rafa and Nole, he could have easily had 23 or even 25 slams, with a slightly stronger mind and a bit of luck. Think about losing three matches from 2 match points against Djokovic in USO 2010, USO 2011 and Wimbledon 2019. Or the Wimbledon 2008 and USO 2009 finals. On the other hand, Nole and Rafa won several grand slams thanks to incredible, unprecedented meltdowns or injuries of their opponents in extremely tight matches (like for example the unbelievable Shapovalov self-destructions against Nole and Rafa in 2021 and 2022). It's like with all the great success, Roger was also ridiculously, almost comically unlucky in the slam race, as if the will of the heaven was strictly against him and tripped his feet whenever he had a chance to become the GOAT.

    It's nice to see how Federer has changed his game in all these years. If you look at his strokes from before, he played technically quite differently - much more fluid and looser. I still believe that the change to the 98 frame has ruined his game. We all know that Federer is not the strongest mentally, but if you look at his career, then he didn't really win anything after the racket change

    • @J.-M.
      @J.-M. Год назад

      The racket was instrumental in his 2017 resurgence, his incredible, and now legendary "neo-backhand", his 4 wins against Nadal that year (the IW 2017 highlights from the match against Nadal are still jaw-dropping), but also his amazing attacking tennis in 2014 and 2015 (see e.g. the Djokovic match in Shanghai 2014), the SABRs, improved serve etc. Yes, it was a different type of tennis, more power-based, but still highly impressive.

    • @J.-M.
      @J.-M. Год назад

      @@impopquiz That's what people often say. In general, the racket improved his backhand and serve, power, stability and consistency (shanks with the older racket used to be a problem as he got older), his forehand got slightly less explosive, the bigger, heavy racket was less manoeuvrable. In general, the racket change probably benefited him.
