I have had many times over the last several years where I get some chippy yips, and its specifically a weird shanky thing that goes like 75 degrees right. When I do that a few times out of 10 it messes with my head and I resort to essentially putting with the wedge to be safe. I've got a lot better and have figured out what caused it, but it still happens a rare once in a while. Besides the weird shanks my short game might be the best part of my game, I can legitimately hit Mickelson flop shots accurately. I also started doing a PW bump n run instead of lob wedge pitches when I'm able to, much more consistent with that. Overall though, learning to use the bounce on my wedges made a large difference in regualr pitches
The advice is great on the technique and it makes for consistent chipping. My problem however is if the lie is not great I start to overthink adjustments. ie. ball landing on a hilly slope near the green or in rough grass or even between bushes with no grass on the ground.
When chipping from tight lie like you're doing is it better to have more bounce like my sand wedge or less bounce like my 52* wedge? Which one is more forgiving on a tight lie? Thanks
Hi Ali, thanks for the lesson. Are you controlling the swing with your shoulders, arms, or hands or a combination of one, two, or all three? If you could shine a little light on my question it would be great
Convince your brain that you have a putter in your hands even though it’s a 56 or W. Then you won’t need to think about things like this. The whole point is to simplify the thought process. You’re trying to make it complicated. Would you ask all these questions of yourself if you were 20yds off the green with a pure fairway to the green? No, you would grab your putter and putt the ball without thinking about all those body parts.. do the same thing except use a 56. Pretend you’re using a putter. Try it 3 times and you will see a light bulb above your head, trust me.
Unlike a putt, Mr. Taylor also makes a nice turn through the ball, which is essential to this technique except on VERY short chips. I have trouble with this. Also, my club has small greens and the fairways narrow down at the green, so chips are as often as not from rougher ground.
Using the wrists quite a bit here? I thought it was supposed to be a putting stroke? Lots of different advice online for these shots. I really struggle with them, mainly decel because I'm scared of thinning it.
I will try this today. But this video is good because it only stresses 2-3 items and not too long…Instead of many videos that drone on too long with too many items and oh-by-the-ways and little other distractions.
Ali, I notice you don’t rotate fully in the finish. I understand it’s more of a putting stroke, but do you think more rotation (chest points to target at finish) would make the shots better?
I totally agree with you. IMO, you need to rotate the chest for the best results. I suffered from the chipping yips for years and I setup exactly the way he's talking about. It wasn't until I rotated my chest and kept my hands and arms passive that cured me from that awful habit. When the arms and chest are operating separately that's when disaster strikes for me. But hey everyone is different...
I set up with open stance, 90% weight on front leg. Maintain 90% on front leg on back stroke. Need to involve front hip and torso into the shot. Distance is governed by length of back stoke and follow through, Need to a accelerate club head thru ball on all shots. Not exactly what he is teaching:)
I have had tremendous success with Mickelson’s ‘hinge and hold’ technique, but it necessarily involves a lot of shat lean. How can reconcile your advice with Phil’s?
Make sure your grip is not strong at all for a short chip. Feels right but, All fat or thin. When I started keeping my right arm, slightly bent and my left arm, stay straight, my fat and thin shots left
Chipping and putting is the only areas that us amateurs can be close to the professionals, unfortunately we don’t spend enough time practicing at it. We should spend 75% at the short game area and 25% at the driving range.
The way to make the chip shot is to align the chip directly toward the hole. Then hit the ball with the correct speed to reach the hole. That way the ball will go right into the hole. You’re welcome.
Exactly! I’ve tried to tell people this forever, but I just couldn’t find the words. This is perfect. I always try to use an analogy like: Think of a flyswatter. Do you wind up like an idiot to hit a tiny fly with a flyswatter? No. U bring it back slowly, pause briefly, then smack the fuck out of the fly. The flyswatter doesn’t need to break in order to kill the fly. It only needs to punch it on the ass. It’s the same with golf. Swing the flyswatter at the fly, not the moon.
Having a more upright shaft angle and hittting like a putting stroke are great tips - I've been using that for about a year - big help.
Why are all of these chipping videos filmed on beautiful grass. Film on bare dirt like the spot my ball seems to always comes to rest on.
Exactly, muni type stuff most people play on not country club tour quality turf.
For the sound😂
Eh, just find a spot just as far from the hole that’s got some good grass

That's pure gold, Ali, thanks a lot! Using the putting grip on chipping opened a new dimension for my short game.
He mentioned his challenges with chipping, bad habits etc.
Thanks for keeping it real.
Excellent demo, will try, short game is trouble for me.... don't know how many times 10 - 30yds from green in 2, and end up with a double bogey 6....
try a putting stroke with your wedge, or even 8 iron

Great stuff!
When having toe down, did you still want to hit ball in center of club or more off the toe? Thanks

Ali - NO ONE demonstrates crap shots better than you!!! 😀
Putting grip massive positive teaching point

tried your method today, worked great.... was even using it from 30 yds out with a gap wedge (50*). Thank you!!!

Chipping with a putter grip has really helped keep be more consistent
Keeping the left / leading arm bent is a massive no-no. Introduces variability in the low point, which in turn creates inconsistency.
I have had tremendous success with Mickelson’s ‘hinge and hold’ technique, but it necessarily involves a lot of shat lean. How can reconcile your advice with Phil’s?
i believe it's a myth that phil's club is leaning forward at impact. take a look at some videos and freeze the moment of impact.
For shat lean take more underpants with to the course...
Useful tips, think the video could've highlighted the key points a bit more and been a couple of minutes shorter for ease of absorbing the info.
All the basic main info is given in the first 4 mins.
Second last one came out like a rocket! 🚀
Hands always ON FRONT OF THE BALL!
One thing you forget to mention is wrist hinge or lack of.... most amateurs tend to think short shots are feel shots, with hands, just like Seve.
0.48 secs “hit a good chip shop” 😂
What would have made this better is a second camera angle so we can see the full shot - in other words - the result.
Can you show a close up of the actual club hitting? Everyone is so far away
6:38 that's exactly how Phil Mickleson sets up
Great video. I do everything wrong addressed here.
What you don't mention is the need to use the big muscles, not the arms.... This makes it "easier" to return back to the ball accurately
If you stand on one leg , normally the left, your sternum should be left of the ball
Yep, brilliant results there, mate. So close to the hole! LOL
I'm glad you obviously don't need the help but found the time to comment!!
😂 both of those first shots are me 😂
What about a 28 handicapper? With that method, I chunk 70% and thin 25%, with occasional air shot, due to yips.
😂
So you saying this was very little help John,?
Sadly yes, 2 pros I have had lessons with have suggested this method, but I can't make it work.@@marklynd2039

My problem is that the ball tends to go to the left.

Chipping and putting is what’s keeping me from breaking 90, heck even 80. 😢😢
You are right! I just don’t spend enough time working on it!
You didn't do your practice swings on the last 2 shots

What if there is a slope on the green???
@@AliTaylorGolf make sure you only play courses that have no slopes on the green. You’re welcome.🤗

Like it: just the technique, very little waffle (US pros’ take note)
12 who is an unbelievable ball striker! lol
How about I get a chipper!
And others say never have ball in center of stance when chipping....f me
You’re left arm don’t look straight to me . Are u keeping it bent on purposely .?
This swing bit too fast especially his down swing
Poor grounds keeper
Too many words. Too many words I had to shut it off halfway through two or three minute videos.
