As an airbrush artist and a painter the biggest difference which no one mentions is the long run of it and how it can be fixed or not fixed. With vinyl as soon as you get a scratches, chips and dents and, you will. You're stuck and have to pay to have it all redone. With paint it can be touched up. And since I do high quality art, I can also spot repair the art and reclear and cut and buff it to a perfect mirror finish. That's the difference.
Orange peel with vinyl is irrelevant now because many companies have created wraps that look more clear than paint. Biggest issue i can think about between vinyl & paint for a diy’r is that if you don’t have patience than you’re not gonna be able to get far in wrapping the car yourself, but with paint anyone can take a sand paper and sand, paint, sand, polish.
I choose wrap any day because you can choose and customize any combination of colors or design and install at ease as long as you have patience, I do my own wraps. In addition with wrap there is no sanding polishing mixing or any of that bs that you have to do with painting, clean prep install done. With wrap though say good bye to automated car washes and leaving your car out in the sun without a car cover.
Problems with vinyl come in a year or two. When you have small scratches, of really hot hot weather or winters with chemical roads. If you paint your car with GOOD paint and GOOD hands, yes its gonna cost around 8k, but you will have your car look perfect and shiny waaay longer and also if something happens, you paint it locally without rewrapping the whole part.
but if you spent $2k-$3k on the wrap, two years pass, you can change the color for another $2k-$3k and still come out cheaper than paint. that's four years, and two different looking cars, and by that time, you should be getting another car.
@@beakhan what should be the approximate cost of paint vs vinyl for a 4 door 5 passenger sedan? Also, isn't one of the drawbacks of vinyl that if you get caught in hail or road debris / small stones it can peel? Where paint would just scratch?
I wanna make my 3rd gen acura black but I don't have much money as a teen in high-school. So I've been considering getting someone to wrap my car for me since it is a cheaper option
Another consideration: With Vinyl, you can change the color of your car if you don't like it - I'm considering that for an old MGB...prices I've been quoted (first rate body shop) $5-7K for paint - 2.5K-3K for wrap. So for another 2Kish I can change the color if I dont' like it.
I just know it takes awhile to get everything down and perfect without any glue or air issues. it can stretch but that’s why you use air. it’s pretty durable though and I think that wrap can last around 7 years which is also pretty good. don’t take my word for it tho cause I’m definitely not an expert 😂
It doesn’t chip or warp but it does scratch and peel if you’re reckless. Extreme heat can also cause it to bubble in some cases. Certain wraps do have protection against it however.
what a great, short, BIG Info video. Great points. BeaMan. Thanks. From an old guy. Also with painting we might be inhaling a lot of bad crap. But I been inhaling bad crap my whole life, yet I'm still good. Anyway, great to have these 2 options, and your video really puts out the important points. Thanks. I'ma stick with painting.
Really informative video, I didn't even think about the orange peel when it comes to wrap! I have an RX8 rust bucket so I need to do a lot of repairing, I was thinking of doing any filling and priming, and then just wrapping over that, as I don't have a workshop and don't want to paint the entire car with cans... Maybe it's the better solution? Idk.. This video has helped though haha, thanks!

Great video but I have one question.., Since it's not an option to paint my motorcycle, due to lack of cash, after I apply the vinyl wrap, what kind of protective layer should I put over it? I'm asking because I've heard a lot of complaints about the wrap chipping too easily. Thanks...
I want to wrap my hood but there were a bunch of paint chips and my wife did a terrible just with some crappy touchup paint, so guessing that would need to be sanded ?
Peeling paint will show through vinyl ,,,just get the car recleared / repainted.. I'm in the same predicament or you could sand down the locations to be wrapped .. Either way a good wrap can cost as much as a OK paint job .. Me I'm deciding to leave it..Now you know why in hot climates like Arizona they don't have clear coats on cars they disintegrate Relatively quickly
If you put uv protection over top every year, it should last 4 to 7 years, don't go to automatic car washes as they are too harsh. Use light pressure and non adhesive soap or foam
Some of his comments are based on his experience. Painting is not easy as it sounds. Wrapping is not as difficult. They are way different in their challenges.
Painting is probably worse because imagine if you make a mistake and don't notice till later? For example painting over some dents that you didn't fix when you really wanted it to be a Flawless job. With vinyl wrap you could just take off the wrap on that part of the panel and redo it after you fix the body
One thing for me leaning towards vinyl now is my car will have a fiber glass widebody and plan on doing some Auto X. If something does happen and the panels need to be repaired its so much easier to repair with vinyl. Just rip the vinyl off, repair the panel and reapply the vinyl. I got enough to wrap my door so it will be the a test fit just not sure if ill like the look of the vinyl.
Ok but I ain't gonna paint or wrap my ride myself imma pay someone to do it So why would I pick one over the other Wish u discussed this If I want graphics am i better off painting and using decals or just wrapping with graphics I want black with gold metallic which I don't think will look good with wrap But the one benefit of wrap is I can keep my original paint job
