In short, Business owners need to be focusing on marketing and not operations. 80% of their time should be on getting customers and 20% making sure the operations work fluently. The business owner should be building the business NOT running the business, that's why we employ brilliant management.

Superb insight James. Loved the part about not needing to go mass market. I probably only need 5-6 new customers a month so why do you forget that so easily? Business owners over think and over complicate everything, well I do anyway. I could have listened for a lot longer to your chat, I also cracked up at the emergency plumber bit ‘These guys have been around 30 years, call them!’ 😂😂😂

I think it’s because business owners when they start are pretty much on their own and they overthink everything. You run through everything past, present and future, sometimes you need someone to say ‘Forget all that, just focus on picking off a few ideal customers.’ Every new Business owner should by law be appointed a coach to guide them and keep them focussed and accountable. That’s not a bad idea 😁

I’m definitely a marketeer of my business, and I’ve been taking advantage of LinkedIn, specifically connecting with the key people I need to (marketing people in companies I’d like to work with) and sending them a direct message that’s friendly, not sales like, with a subtle hint to view my lead generating website. It’s been working really well!
My question is, in my business, I am, or I create the product.
I create commercial photography for big companies. So I have to be the doer of my business because that’s why my clients hire me, for me and my eye.
What would you recommend for a business like mine to grow?
At the moment it’s just me and my wife, but I’m looking into getting people who can do accounts, book models and makeup, arrange venues, edit the photos etc. - Realistically that’s about a year or two away.
So what could I be doing now to gain more traction and start to grow?

At what point do you distinguish between sales and operations? I see the difference you mentioned between being a marketeer and being on operations, but if you are sitting in a chair with a one to one with a client transacting, would you class that as operations or sales....then would the key bit for what you are saying be the bit before the one to one with sales, being getting the leads into the business for employees to fulfill the sales? Is it the bit before that you say we need to be, sounding the drum and getting hot leads/clients into the eco system/funnel etc for the team to look after etc

Thanks for the video James! I have a question if you don't mind answering it. If someone has a product/service that consumes time (such as web design) should they out source that and just do the marketing? I find most of my time is spent delivering the services we provide because there is only 2 of us in the company at this point.
If you want to grow your business you need to get your selves in to the mindset of the “ getting customers role “ for as much as your time as possible.
