Whilst it's easy to be swept along in the hysteria of a situation too many causes have been lost by not doing anything until it's to late !! In my view considered discussion is no bad thing. Here's a point tho, we all know and wouldn't disagree that lead is toxic, however what medical evidence is there that staff at air rifle shooting ranges are becoming unwell after prolonged exposure to lead in air rifle pellets. These people are exposed to much higher levels than the general public ever are. We, as lead pellets users, are also at some risk but so long as it's known and is therefore managed sensibly by us as users I don't see what the big issue is. I as a regular user would be more than happy to be tested and with a six year old daughter who I want to see grow up, it's in my interest to stay healthy. It may be that I am being poisoned but I suspect that I was at far greater risk from the lead water pipes In the old house I grew up in than from pellets so long as basic hygiene procedure are followed. Lead occurs naturally is mined and is through our use returned to the earth. I do agree that the health of staff at ranges must be a priority and working practices adopted to keep them safe. Shotguns diapers far more lead than air rifles. A ban on lead in shotguns would perhaps be an answer but I fail to see, until medical reports show otherwise, how banning lead in air rifle ammunition is commensurate with the risks to the general public or the end user so long as basic hygiene practises are followed. I have a HW95K in .177 shooting RWS Superdomes at 8.3gr putting out 785fps / 11.4 ft/lbs .....the nearest non lead pellet I can get to that in weight ( going off 785fps ) would put my muzzle energy at 12.04 ft/lbs ( more on a hot day ) . Getting a tin at the weekend so I can run a few shots through my chrono to get a proper Fps reading to see where the muzzle energy actually comes out at .
On rough calculation my fps could go to around 950 and stay under 12ft/lbs ...but will have to see ...then it's just a matter of seeing how accurate and consistent they are
Hi Mark, I've watched your pellet testing content over the last year couple of years with interest. It was through your video that I discovered and tried the amazing Terminator pellets which are very accurate in my BSA R10 SE .177 for me they have been the find of the last few years. I never would have tried them if I hadn't seen your testing of them. Now back to the lead free question. Should lead be banned, do you think that the .20 calibre will take over and be the new .177 & .25 the new .22 ? Another thought I have had is would the new lead free pellets shoot better at lower power levels say 10flb for .177 this of course would effect longer range shooting in .177 but as most pest control with sub 12 ftlb rifles take place at a max of 40yds. It's just a thought as if we can't increase the mass of the pellets would using less power help ? Your thoughts and experience would be helpfull. Also I have heard that testing for lead poisoning is a simple blood test. If this is the case then maybe we should all be contacting our GPs and get tested especially those that work at air gun ranges or handle a lot of lead pellets. This would give us some evidence in writing to our MPs. Collecting lead pellets used in backyard garden shooting is not an issue I have for a long time used cardboard boxes filled with rags and old clothes as taget / pellet catchers. Most of the noise when using a silenced rifle comes from the pellet hitting the metal pellet trap. Using my method still traps the pellets but it's virtually silent just a dull this. Hello Garry. I agree the Terminator is one of those pellets that has surprised us all. I never expected it to be anywhere near as good as it is in .177, but is can hold it's own with the best out there and then some. As regards the lead free pellets, the only benefit that I can see is that because they are so light weight and create more friction in the barrel, similar to a slug, they come out slower and less mass, means less energy. The upside is that if you can alter the power of your rifle to the slug, you should be able to get close to 900 feet per second or more, making is shoot as flat as an FAC, and still probably not be much higher than 10.5 to 11 ft/Lbs depending on weight. I expect because we look like we are going to go the lead route, the manufacturers will have to re design the pellets to suit the power, or instead of shooting .177 or .22, go for .25 to gain the extra mass. Like you say, there is no evidence of anyone getting lead poisoning at air-gun ranges, and the shooter would get it over anything else if that was the case. This is more like the back door way of trying to ban guns, because of the extra cost and possible effects of accuracy and power in shooting sports, although this also effects firearms as well as air-guns, so they will have even bigger problems.
It doesn't effect the military or police. It just shows that they are targeting sports users. A ban of lead for bullet and pellet will kill the use of guns, because of accuracy and cost issues.
@@michaelholt7963 .20 cal is the next calibre size up to get some more weight in to a pellet for stability at longer ranges. .20 cal in alloy won't be the same as .177 cal in lead but I am thinking it will be more stable at distance than .177 cal alloy pellets ?
@@MrMattw975 yes, the bigger the calibre, the better. All current rifles can also be raised in power to flatten the shot curve, as these light weight pellet loose between 1 1/2 and 2 ft/lbs over lead pellets, meaning sub 12 will shoot similar to FAC. The only way FAC will stay subsonic will be in big bore calibres.

Great video mate I can't see any of the alternatives being good enough at the moment. It's a consistency thing. If they were predictable you could adjust to suit. On the lead issue, I've worked with lead for most of my adult life and as long as you follow basic hygiene and common sense it's safe. The amount of lead that we airgunners put into the environment is negligible and most of it ends up in a catcher or a pest. If lead is blanket banned the sport will adapt but I think with air guns the agenda is more about something else.

I think it's more about gun control than the use of lead. Many older houses still have lead water pipes. You don't see the government rushing to remove them do you, and we drink the water that runs through them. Like most regulations they don't base them on facts or evidence.
It's the same when using Slugs, because the larger contact area creates more friction. I may try it with these in the future. Not sure if they would benefit from loobing, as lead is softer and creates lead deposits in the rifling.

i dont get this vid at all you have named it as a comparison vid but you have got accuracy issues with your lead pellets and the lead free pellets and coz your results are so bad me at this end have learnt nothing from watching this vid somethink is majorly going wrong here if you think thats acceptable its hard to say as so much can affect pellet accuracy
if you have a pcp gun ,and can change a barrel for leadfree pellets it could be better results with leadfree ,but al guns that made before a ban or can not tuned for ,will not work with leadfree and should get out of the lead ban and get lead pellets free to use ,if used where lead gets recovered, better no ban at all ,regulations where (pellettrap )and how to use lead pellets and bullets will solve the lead problem also . ps . you have to clean a barrel from lead or after change to another brand i think to get more trusty results
The Lead ban ,has been coming for some time ! The manufactures should have a alternative ,they have had plenty of time to develop a proper alternative that’s as good as lead ,if not the sport will die,and iam sure the likes of FX ,JSB,H&N will sort this 👍
Well the plastic pellet manufacturers are going to have to do better then what we have at moment Or a lot of guys are changing hobbies Or lead pellets will be pushed under ground or hidden in pockets out of site out of mind and only plastic ones on bench displayed🤔🙄
Any lead free pellet is supersonic in fac guns, well mine anyway, and inaccurate..also unsuitable for use in buildings (sub 12) due to over penitation and ricochet risk...all non lead ammo commercialy available are too hard and too light....for the ethical dispatch of quarry, accuracy is paramount...taking this a step forward, I'm not aware of anyone using non lead ammo over lead for any accuracy based airgun competition and being successful. I have many part tins/boxes of non lead 'wonder' pellets in my 'collection' that I have purchased over many years, prometheus, titan black,Saxby palmer nature,logan penetrator etc,etc all expensive, inaccurate and crap
Abysmal , if you used thos pellets in a hunting situation it would be unnecessarily cruel in my opinion as there is no way you could ensure a clean kill !

As I stands with the lead free pellets available when the ban is implemented our sport is effectively finished!!!
With the number of shooters in the UK and the amount of money to the suppliers, gun and pellet manufacturers will find a solution.

I did read on a Facebook group that you should clean your barrel before using lead free pellets.whether there is any truth to this I don’t know..?
